Do you watch your calories when you eat out?

Yes, I am guilty....I don't calorie count really..I just select very carefully. I have started running (a lot), and I have found out the hard way that my performance is often connected to my diet. My discovery has lead me to help my family make better choices because we are all very active. We usually go out to eat on Saturdays after soccer games and on Sundays after church. Eating out is a treat, but it is too frequent of a treat for us to throw all caution to the wind everytime....so, yes, I do remind my family to make healthy choices and of the calories they could possibly consume, but in the end, they make the choice. However, I would never tell my friends or co-workers a thing about their meals.

I watch what I eat when I eat out most of the time, but I also eat out pretty frequently. Every once in awhile I will eat whatever I want- including dessert. Usually this is a birthday, anniversary or something like that. I only watch what I eat though not what everyone else does. :thumbsup2

I try to, and am slowly getting better at it. But I don't critique others habits. I have a friend who does that though and I find that she eats the worst of anyone I know. She will tell anyone who listens the amount of calories in the foods they are eating and why she would never eat that. But at the same time she won't eat anything during the day (or very little, maybe 300 calories max) so she can have ice cream later in the day. And if we try and say something to her she ignores it, explaining that she won't eat more than a certain amount of calories each day and it does not matter if those calories have any nutritional value. Drives me crazy!

Sometimes yes, sometimes no! I used to work with a woman who was obnoxious about ordering and eating. Not only would she comment on what you ordered, but she would then talk about how her meal was "so huge" she would never be able to eat dinner that night. She would say it four or five times through the meal so that everyone knew she would not be eating dinner that night. It was ridiculous! Not to mention, we were all fairly certain she went home and polished off a cake!!! :lmao:

I don't go out to eat at a sit down restaurant very often so when I do I order what I want. However, I don't totally lose control. I eat half of my meal and take the other half home for the next day. We order one dessert and we each take a few bites. I try to let my DH and DD get in 2 bites for 1 of mine. It's enough to give me something sweet without packing on the calories. The downside is that they usually always go for something chocolate while I sometimes would rather something else (maybe cheesecake or carrot cake or something along those lines). On Friday's we order take out for lunch in my office. I always try to eat healthy then. Usually I'll order something with lots of veggies like a greek salad wrap or something along those lines.

For me, it depends on how strict I am being with my eating habits. This past month, I had been trying especially hard to lose weight. I wouldn't blurt out how many calories someone is eating (I'd keep that to myself!).

I watch what I eat, but I don't care what my friends eat. :confused3

I honestly try not to eat out that often because it's just too expensive and way too many fat/calories for one meal. But at Disney all bets are off, I eat anything and everything!:thumbsup2

I try to watch what I get when I go out but not what others get. I try for lots of grilled items and lately have been getting water with my meal rather than anything else.

I was wondering how calorie conscious are you when you dine out?

If I am being conscious about it when I am at home, I usually am when out, too. That being said, I've been very bad lately.

If we do fast food, I'll share fries instead of eating a whole order, and get my burger with no mayo, etc.

I like when the middle tier (Applebee's, TGI Friday's, etc) post calorie information on their menu. The under 550 calorie menu at Applebee's is really helpful, too.

Why would anyone ever count someone else's calories?
My 2 DS's worked at BD's Mongolian BBQ and ate like crazy but all protein and veggies. They dropped weight while working there. Taught us a new way to eat. No sugar, flour or processed food. Dh and I eat all we want but only protein and veggies, Works for us. No problems, no weight gain. DH still has coffee sometimes. LOL.
Low cal or fat doesn't work for us.

I am, knowing that even the slightly healthy option will be way more calories and fat than something I make at home. I also try to eat half of my entree, and take some leftovers home. There is no way I'm ordering something with alfredo sauce, a bacon cheeseburger, or something fried. I have never ordered dessert (I'm not a fan anyway). I would never comment on anyone's choices, however (except DH - who loves his smokey meats and cheese).

I pack up about 1/2 of mine, too. If I don't have anyone with me to share. Nor would I comment on someone else's choices.

I'm calorie conscious of myself. But there are times I'll eat "fattening" foods, just not as much as I did a few years ago. What other people eat isn't any of my business.

So the 3 of us ordered various desserts to go, I got the linda's fudge cake. Which of course had "Sue" saying to me. "that's ridiculous, that thing has 1900 calories in it". Which of course led me to say some thing really childish and totally not printable on the dis.
?

I would have been saying childish and un-printable things to "Sue" by then too. And I wouldn't go out to lunch with her again. Her behavior was downright RUDE and obnoxious. I would never EVER tell someone 'oh, so many calories in that' it's almost like saying "you're too fat to be eating that"

I think about it, sometimes, But if I'm going out to eat, it's a treat. Normally I won't get desert, but once in a while I do.

I was thinking the same thing. I would not be dining with "Sue" again. So rude on a number of levels.

I also think of eating out as a treat. I have a general idea of what to avoid, so I steer towards something that's either healthy or more middle of the road when eating out. The thing is, I don't need (or want) any help with that.

I'm down 51lbs so far and have the attitude of everything in moderation. If I'm going out, a rare treat, I'm not going to order something I can easily make at home. That said, I know there's no way I'd be able to eat an entire entree so will get the appetizer version. I know how my body reacts to overly processed or greasy foods (can we say food hangover?) so I tend to base my choices on that. But no, I don't count calories when I go out and I most certainly wouldn't be the calorie police. That's extremely rude and obnoxious. However your friend may not even realize how she's coming off. Some people get caught up in "spreading the word" and lose all sense of perspective. I probably would have said something like, "I appreciate your concern but I know what I'm doing" effectively giving her a reality check and hopefully making her realize what she's doing. If that didn't work I would have been more direct.

In New York City chain restaurants, calorie counts are posted next to the menu item. I do make choices based on the calories.

As for "Sue", I think I would have said "Yes, I do!", put a very large bite into my mouth, swallowed and smiled right at her. I'd also avoid going out to lunch with her, since I don't like to dine with rude people.
