Just wondering how many folks take the time to wash their fruit and veggies before they're eaten?

Do you just rinse them with water...scrub them with soap and water...trust that they were washed at the store?

Just wondering what others thought...and if others do think about this...sometimes I wonders too much...

:confused3

I know they weren't washed at the store.. I've been in enough back rooms to see how the produce is usually treated.
I rinse with water.. wish there was something more I could do, but soap on an apple just sounds gross.

i use ONE drop of dawn dish liquid and the hottest water i can stand. i scrub the apple thoroughly and rinse well.

This is me. A tiny bit of soap. The surfectants in soap pull off dirt from the surface. I have read that you don't really need to use soap but I like to. They say you should use it on your hands--why not dirty fruit?

For things that are very porous like strawberries, peaches, etc. I just rinse it really, really well.

I'm a rebel...I like to live on the edge. I don't wash anything prior to eating it. I know I should...but I don't.

Washing anything with water is pointless...the chemicals and pesticides are waterproof. Otherwise they would have to be re-applied after every watering or rain. So, unless you're going to use a true cleaner on it (which soaps are full of chemicals etc) it's pointless in my book.

Clean it with vinegar maybe? eek.

This is me, too. I will rinse off strawberries, but an apple just gets rubbed on my shirt. lol

Pick up apple and eat it. There is nothing like peas straight of the bush, strawberries straight from the alotment.

same here. :thumbsup2

I rinse it because I find apples often seem "dusty" if not rinsed. I've read you should scrub them with soap to remove the wax, but I really don't care enough to do that.

Tomatos & peppers I wash with soap - I have no idea why
Apples - eat
Berrys I rinse with water
Pitt fruits I rinse and wipe with a paper towel

melons - I wash the outside with soap/water - something about a cantalope scare a few years back and I got in the habit

I can see your point with the pesticides. One reason we try to buy as much pesticide free and organic produce as possible and grow the rest. However, in this age of e. coli outbreaks being traced back to produce, not washing seems a bit reckless. So, we wash everything well and hope for the best.

I always rinse fresh fruits, veggies, and bagged salad (I don't care that it has supposedly been "triple washed") with water. I'm sure I can't get rid of pesticide residue by doing that, but I can hopefully get rid of any baterica caused by E. Coli, etc. or from other people's nasty hands touching it at the store.

Rinse with water and wipe with a paper towel. For berries, I rinse them with water for several minutes, then cut up in a bowl - or eat right away.

I'm not trying to remove pestisides and chemicals. I'm trying to remove the germs of many hands that have touch them--and there are many and none of them clean. I figure not washing an apple is like not washing your hands all day.
