Do you use current phrases and "hip" words?

No. I am 53 and prefer to speak like the educated adult that I am.

I have no desire to make myself look foolish by pretending to be some young slang-speaking kid.

I'm so hip I can hardly see over my own pelvis.

But no, I don't use trendy slang in conversation, because it makes the one speaking that way sound like an uneducated oaf. Now, there may be times where I WANT to sound like an uneducated oaf (like when I'm joking around or being silly). But things like OMG, basic, cray cray, adorbs and so on...never.

I don't use a lot of the newer terms as I don't really hear them often until they're not so cool anymore.

But using slang doesn't make one uneducated. If you want to use lack of slang as a step up to your moral high horse then go right ahead. Slang has been part of our lexicon for centuries. Most slang comes and goes, but my guess is you use 'slang' without even realizing it. Like a PP said 'kid' is, in fact, slang.

Language changes and adapts over time. I swear I don't know how some of you can stand going out and dealing with the 'common' people everyday!

My kids don't use most of these that I've read here. I have two teens and we're the "hang out" house for the 17yo's social circle but probably 95% of the slang I hear them using is the same slang teens have used forever. They're boys, though, and not particularly in touch with the MTV demographic. They hang out here because DS has a "man cave" with his Xbox, "thumpin'" speakers, and a workshop (metalworking and electronics), and they're always building crazy things like catapults and frankensteined computer systems (they have one now that is just a jukebox, built from outdated hardware I had laying around).

DD13's social circle is a bit more in touch with trends, but they don't seem to use much slang and when they do it is pretty comical because it sounds so forced/silly coming out of their mouths. They use it more in text but not so much out loud.

That's not what basic means, at least where I live (Va). Here, basic refers to girls who are into things like monogrammed clothing, Ugg boots with leggings, Starbucks, and Lily Pulitzer. It's the equivalent of what we would have called "preppy" when I was young in the 90s. To call a girl "basic" is not actually a put-down, and doesn't mean not impressive.

How do I know this? :) I'm a college professor, and my students use that term ALL the time. I go to a college where many of the girls could be described as "basic" (small, private, expensive liberal arts college in the south).

Don't forget the Northface! Around here Basic is a term for "stereotypical white girls." Which I find hilarious, because I fit the description quite well! :rotfl:

Language evolves and "adults" have been chiding the younger generation for a long time over their use of new words. I certainly don't judge others as uneducated over their use of current language.

Same here. Most of these "hip" phrases drive me nuts mainly because people that use them sound like they haven't made it out of 6th grade...

Bae is the newest one I just shake my head at...

Shut the Door is pretty "old" LOl

Bae is annoying to me also. When girls I teach talk about boys I will ask, "oh is that your beau?" And they swear every time I messed up the word bae.

Then again these are the same kids that asked if I had a game on my phone and when I said I had no games on my phone they responded, "why do you have a phone then?"

I teach high school - my kids teach me the lingo and I'm pretty current on what stuff means, even if I don't use it regularly.

I don't even know any hip phrases. I'm still trying to get rid of the ones I learned in the first place.

I have a question about this. And I am not offended at all by what your wrote (and not picking on you because I see it often) but why is it ok to say "stereotypical white girl" and no one bats and eye but if someone said "stereotypical black girl" they would be labeled a racist "?

I have always wondered as well, and to be honest, I can't answer that for you, and I wish I could. I am not easily offended, so I laugh it off and go about my merry way. Most of the time it's other white females I hear saying it about themselves and to each other, I know my friends and I do. I do, however, hear people of other races say it and nothing is ever said about it, my friends and I take it as a joke and that's about it.
