Here Here Johnny Fedora. You're right on target. We spend thousands on Vacation and give nothing to someone who gives us HOURS of a service with the potential to make or break our stay ????

I don't understand why you would give the valet $4 (for 3 minutes of work), or the bellman $20 (for 10 minutes of work). but leave $0 for the person who spends 2hrs cleaning up unit you've used.
Because bellmen and valet parkers' hourly wages are (typically) based on receiving tips - just like servers and bartenders, they can legally be paid much less than minimum wage. Housekeepers' wages are not. The amount of time and effort spent has nothing to do with it.

IMO, it's a nice gesture and will increase the "positive" side of your karma bank account, but it's not required.

How does housekeeping have "the potential to make or break [your] stay?" If the service is unacceptable, call, lodge a complaint, they'll have the room redone and you go on with your day.

I sometimes do. On our trip earlier this month, the housekeeper came in early, around 9:00, for T & T, we were still there. I gave her a couple bucks on the way out.

We switched to an AP rate on Friday and I forgot that we would get full housekeeping, she came in while we were gone. She did a great job, made little designs with the towels, left a couple extra towels, changed the bed even though I had already made it, ran the dishwasher. I felt bad that I didn't leave anything. I did leave a tip the next day when we checked out.

Many people don't take such a laid back approach when they find their room to be dirty, or someone's old socks in their bed, or roaches in the cupboard.

WARNING: Philisophical statement about to occur. The more good deeds you do for others, whether it be simply holding a door, saying good morning or thanking someone for a job well done, the more good things will happen to you in return.

With the way tipping has been describe on this board before...I would bet that even on the worst tip day, average valet makes substantially more $/hour than the average housekeeper. Housekeeping work is mostly behind the scences. They are often not there to smile, greet you and hold their hand out for a tip like the other front line service positions. Therefore, Disney can't classify them as a 'tipped position". Bottom line, if they are doing their work right, it is a much more physically demanding line of work than smiling and fetching cars. In my book they provide a direct service to the guest.

I wish there was a way to find out who cleaned your room before you arrived...I'd like to be sure the tip goes to that individual. Has anyone ever done that?

Johnnie, I agree mostly with what you're saying, but have you ever watched those valets ? They will RUN out to get the car, in the blazing Florida heat, hop into a car with the interior temp approaching inferno levels while wearing a full dress costume rather then a tank top & shorts. I've never seen a housekeeper run and for the most part they work in a very nice, climate controlled enviroment.

Hot clean rental car or climate controlled dirty bathroom...I may opt for the former. ;) BTW, I'd run too if I could make $2-4 bucks every five minutes. With that kind of money, I could afford not to complain about the lack of a decent AP discount for DVCers. :)

We alway tip when we leave, but not on T&T day. We usually stay 6+ nights so I leave $10 for a 1-BR and $15 for a 2-BR. Quality service from this WDW department is more critical to me having a good vacation experience than the few minutes of service I get from the bellmen or valet.

Because one is a tipping position and the other is not.

We live near the Atlantic City casinos. One of my customers was a valet. The casinos always offered free parking in their garages. The city decided to impose a $2.00 per car fee on all the casinos who in turn charged it to the customer. My customer stated it cost him $200-$300 per DAY in tips.

we also tip housekeeping!:) The going rate is $2.00 a day( but I could be wrong), so that is what we give them.

We always tip (sometimes too much!). We are of the belief that we have always been fortunate in our lives and especially lucky to be DVC members and have this feeling of wanting to give back. We feel that we are so lucky to be able to be members and have such wonderful vacations that we want to be generous to the people who help to make vacations special. Please don't think that we are wealthy, just happy middle class.:sunny:

Why would someone calculate a tip on a "per day" basis for a service that is not rendered daily?

That's a very nice way of putting it.

I won't crticize anyone for being generous. Go ahead and tip the gardeners who make the landscaping look great, the security attendents at the guard gate, and the desk clerks at check-in. I won't tip them, but I won't be upset if you do.

I'll admit that at DVC resorts, we leave a tip on a master bedroom pillow for housekeeping when we check out. We know that there's no obligation to do so. (In comparison, there really is an obligation to tip restaurant servers, valet parking attendents, bell service employees, taxi/limo drivers, and bartenders.)

We tip on checkout day. We never tip for T&T. I used to be a chamber maid here on cape cod when I was a teenager - I know how nice it is to get a tip. Even if it isn't much.

Scenario:
You spill an entire pan of bacon grease on the carpeting at your OKW villa. Unless you want to rent a rug doctor, you'll need a little help from housekeeping with this clean-up.

Do you tip the housekeeper? Or, do you not tip because Disney has classified that position as "non-tipping"?

I would DEFINITELY tip for that one! Heck, I would probably feel like I should replace the carpet!

Lexxiefern, you sound familiar to me. The way and amount we tip is due in large part to the fact that my DW as a teenager worked as a waitress in Maine during her summer vacations. It would be interesting to see the tipping patterns of those who have been in these types of jobs compared to those who have not been.
