Do you tip for takeout food?

I make 2.13 a hour, but my check is 0 because they take taxes out of it for what I make in tips. I do decent, but then again I have been doing it for 12 years so I am pretty good at my job..

Wow, see, $2.13 an hour, i think i would tip even if i got horrible service! Here, where my waitress is making the same amount as everyone else that makes minimum, it is easier to say "i got horrible service, i am not tipping"..Now, i am a former waitress, so i do expect good service, and I know everyone has bad days, but when waitresses and walmart workers and people who pump gas make the same wage, it is very different than in the US...I am not sure how i feel about such a low wage, i think the majority of people tip, but some dont, some dont tip enough!!

Here, the only ones who can make less than minumum are kids who havent put in 500 hours(of work anywhere) and most places still pay minumum and ignore this policy!(and i think they get 5.00 dollars an hour)

Can i ask, in the US, are all waiter/waitresses paid less then minimum wage. In bc, canada, minimum wage is 8.00 an hour whether you waitress or work at walmart. I just wondered how this works down there, i tip when i go to a restaruant (of course) but if i dont get good service i will not tip. (this usually happens 3 or 4 times a year that i get horrible service,usually i get great service)...sometimes i think my son works harder for his 8 dollars at canadian tire than my waitress does for her 8 dollars...so just curious how this works with servers in the US?

Honestly it depends on the state. I get paid the same minimum wage as everyone, although most people that are not tipped income make over minmum wage. The hostess and cooks ect. make about $10 -15 an hour. What you need to remember is that the server is tipping out 3 - 4 % of their sales to the bussers, bartenders, food runners, expo's and host. We tip 1% of our sales to the expo and bar and 2% to the bussers. So if you leave no tip at all the server is actually paying to serve you. Now I know there are bad servers out there and some deserve to be stiffed, but there are also people who never tip regardless of the service. As far as to go orders,if I am the one that takes the order over the phone, gathers the order and packs it in the bag and makes sure everything is the way you ordered it and I'm a minimum wage or less is some states paid server then a tip of some sort would probably be in order. You will be remembered either way .

It around $3.00 and hour where we live. I tip really well when I have good service - and enough to make it worth their time when I get so-so service. -

No, I don't tip if I don't have something brought to me. If there's a tip jar I might drop my change into depending on how much it is but I won't leave bills in the jar. I tip servers, people who serve me by bringing me something, not someone who puts stuff in a bag and I carry out or to the table to eat it.
Different states have different laws about paying servers. I know my sister was a waitress in both Oregon & Idaho and the laws were different in each place.

See, I don't get this? I go to a Dunkin Donuts or SB or such, why would you tip? These are not tipped positions, they are paid a bit more then minimum wage, why would you tip them? If Mickey D's starts putting out tip jars, are you going to tip them too??

Honestly I think the tip jars are wrong and should be removed. Lets just beg for money!! You get a salary..just do your job why ask for more? Isn't that what a raise is for??

You hit the nail on the head with this one. Seriously. I HATE seeing tip jars everywhere I go--I saw one at Subway the other day! I worked at Subway in college and we NEVER put a tip jar out--that's what your paycheck was for. I feel the "tip jars" these days are just part of that All American Entitlement attitude.

I don't agree I should have to tip for take out.....but if paying by debit, I often feel obligated as it seems EVERYWHERE there is that "tip" prompt on the debit machine. I shouldn't , but I always feel cheap when I hit enter, enter, enter 3 times to bypass that and leave $0 tip! I hate that about paying by debit!

When I was younger I bartender at restaurants, and we were the ones doing the carryout orders. I will say the majority of people tipped, which was nice since unlike most people believe the kitchen staff does not usually box/bag togo orders up. We would have to spend time that could be better utilized making drinks for servers or taking care of the customers at the bar. Nothing was more frustrating on a busy night than having to spend five minutes to package up a to go order, coming back to the bar to a line of tickets for drinks and then not being tipped by the person picking up the order to go. Not only did we get stiffed by them, but then our other tips would go down due to getting behind and not giving top service to everyone else.

For people wondering about delivery charges/tipping the driver; in MOST cases the entire delivery charge goes back to the restaurant or is split with the driver. You should ALWAYS tip the driver even with a delivery charge. I ran a restaurant for 5 yrs and trust me, they remember you; your tip and your address. When your food is sitting there and every driver is skipping over it, it's for a reason.

If I am driving to a location to pick up take out food, normally I would not tip. I am not sure what I would be tipping for. They are placing the food into a bag and taking my money. That does not seem like something I would tip for as they are not really providing a personal service, but just completing a transaction.

Thank you, it's not just me!! I've work my share of minimum wage jobs. But if I am OFFER a tip, I have accepted. I don't ask for them.

My work takes me out of town frequently for work and I pick up food from many very good restaurants and take it back to the hotel since I am not always interested in eating alone in a restaurant. I know that a server/bartender is responsible for bagging, boxing my order along with rounding up napkins, silverware, condiments, etc. I tip 15%. If I just go to an Applebee's that has a take out window, I know that these orders are generally serviced by a dedicated employee who is being paid at least minimum wage and not a $2 hour server so my tip is generally in the 10% range.

If we get take out from a restaurant, we tip for the exact reason you are stating. If we get it delivered we tip. I do not tip at a fast food place with a tip jar. Sometimes, I get conflicted at Starbucks....It takes the person a lot longer to make my cappuccino than it does a bartender to pour a pint of beer and I always tip a bartender.

I do tip the pizza delivery guy. I used to go pick up my own pizza, but parking is very bad near the place I get my pizza from so it's actually easier to have them deliver. They have a delivery charge, but I usually give him a little extra.

I will not tip in places like Dunkin Donuts. They are not doing anything that requires me to tip.

I hate when the supermarket I go to has "guest baggers". They have kids from local high schools, churches, etc. bag groceries and they put their tip can right near the charge machine. Why should I tip for someone to put my groceries in a bag when I prefer to do it myself? If they weren't there and the cashier was bagging, would I be expected to tip the cashier? The worst part is, they have them at every lane, so you can't even go to a different lane to avoid them. I've gotten some nasty looks and twice a comment about not tipping them.

I tip at 2 local "ma & pa" places that we frequent because they are above average in service and I know they could use it. But it's rarely more than a buck or two and not every time.

Yes, but the Starbucks employee is making around 8 - 10/hour! The bartender gets waiterstaff minimum plus tips!

You have to remember it goes to a good cause.Around here during baseball season the boys (tag) at different location. They stand outside stores, gas stations etc with cans and in uniform. All donations helps toward the cost of tournaments, and expenses.You dont have to give, just say no thank you..
