I went to Sonic today for lunch and it got me thinking. Do you tip at Sonic? What about the drive thru at Sonic? Someone is still bringing the food out to your car at the drive thru there. If you do tip, how much?

I usually tip, but not a lot. Maybe .50 or a buck. HOWEVER - they are installing the credit card machines at the parking spots here and I can't figure out how to add a tip if you use them. (I never have cash anymore)

Ours has drive-in spots and a drive-through. I use the drive-through most of the time so that I don't have to decide what to tip. If I do park in a drive-in spot, I do tip. It's hard to figure out how much to tip, though. I like to go for a half-priced drink during happy hour. My total comes to $.65. 15% of that is about $.10, which seems to be an insult. I usually give them $1 and tell them to keep the change, but that's a pretty big percentage.

Well, when I used to be able to go to Sonic, I would tip. Usually a buck or two, depending on how much I'd ordered.

I worked at Sonic for several Christmas seasons including last year to earn extra money, and yes most of the time we got tipped. Usually it was about 2 dollars a car. Trust me, it takes alot to learn how to balance a tray while on skates and to step off a curb all at the same time.

I tip. They are worth it bringing it to your car. Since I mostly get drinks, however, I too give them more than normal.

$1 if it's just me. $2 if it's for 2.

I've noticed that they don't skate anymore. They just walk. I guess it has to do with insurance? :confused3

Depends on the service. This one Sonic I think they hired all morons (or put them all at one Sonic). I kid you not. EVERY time they screw up the order, mess up the change (even my 14yo was in awe someone could mess up that bad), take forever and a bazillion years for our order and seem to be quite rude. So I've been going to a different one lately and those folks always get the orders right, change right, always nice as can be.

I usually tip a dollar if it is just me ordering.

If I get food for the entire family - 2 bucks.

I tip up to one dollar. Usually I give them whatever coins are left over from the transaction, unless this is less than 50 cents, In which case I give them a dollar.

This is one of the few places where I adjust my tip amount by the quality of service (unless they are rude too me). Instead I tip simply becuase I know they get paid very little, they work very hard and a extra buck (which I wont miss) is really appreciated by them.

I usually get a large Diet Coke - $1.59. I give them $2.00 and tell them to keep the change. So that's a .41 cent tip on $1.59, or about .09 over a standard 20%. I think that's fair, but I used to tip the same when my drink cost $1.49, so sometimes I add a dime or a quarter. Especially if one of my "regular" girls comes out - usually they see me through the window and just laugh and say, "The usual?" They are nice girls and I know if they are working full-time at Sonic they can probably use a little extra. One of the girls had a baby on Wednesday and was back at work by the weekend (!!!!!!!) so I always try and give her an extra quarter or fifty cents.

I never tip at Sonic, and I thought I was pretty adept at tipping practices.

Maybe I've lost my mind....I just didn't think I'd have to pay a tip to get my fast food.

Sonic is the only one I tip at, however I would tip at any place with carhops. I'm not sure why carhops would be different than your average person behind the counter at McDonalds, but thats the way I have always done things.

It depends on the mood I'm in and how much money I actually have.

So, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

I had no idea you were supposed to tip at Sonic. I've also never seen them on skates. This is pretty much a mute point since we don't have a Sonic around here anymore.

When I paid with credit at Sonic I used to round up to the next dollar if it was under $5, round up to the next dollar and add another $1 if it was around $10 and then upto $15 we'd round up and add $2. However, last time I was at Sonic to get an ice cream cone I wanted to give the girl a tip and she said their credit card machines won't allow it and they can only accept a tip if it's actual money.

I usually use the drive-through at Sonic and yes, I tip, but not a lot.

I always hear talk on the boards about Sonic and I see the commercials for them on the cable channels, but we don't have Sonic's here :(

I would like to try them.
