Two weeks ago, I placed a fairly large order on jcpenney.com. One of the items came up as "backordered, to be shipped approx 11/29." Over the 2 weeks, I've gotten all the other items in.

I just got a call from JC Penney regarding my backordered item. They told me it was now in stock, told me what the item was, yet told me that the charge would not go through on my JC Penney card. I asked if there was a reason that the charge wouldn't go through and they told me that they didn't know. They asked me if I would like to charge this item on a different card and wanted me to give them that credit card number over the phone.

Now, I'm about 80% sure the call was probably legit since they seemed to to have a very good idea about the item on backorder. But, the caller ID didn't identify the caller as JCPenney and I can't prove it was them either. I declined to give them a new card and cancelled my order.

Probably unnecessary but something about it just seemed odd? Do you think so?

That is odd. I guess I would have told them that I would call my card company and then get back with them.

I certainly would not use another card either.

Call the 800 number on the back of your card and see what they tell you. IF your balance is close to the limit the charge would not go through. IF there is more activity than normal the charge may not go through. The people in the credit area can give you a better idea what the issue may be.

Sometimes credit card companies hold charges and I think that it's a good idea to call them. I even had a gas charge held for a few days recently because I drove to another part of Texas and apparently my bank thought that it looked odd.

I have about a $5,000 limit. I have no balance on the card with the exception of the pending order that may have totaled $175.00 (it consisted of several small items). The other items I have received and returned two of this. This last item was for $29.00.:confused3

Okay, I called. They didn't see any problem but didn't know also think it was strange that someone would have called me. Credit services vs. jcpenney.com are separate entities apparently.

I would definitely put in a call to JC Penney to follow up. If it was legit, then your order is cancelled. If not, then it's still backordered or ready to ship.

Someone along the way in the order process would have access to the information about the item - but not the credit card - and be trying to scam you.

I would definitely want to know.

Agree.:thumbsup2

It seems that it was JCPenney who called as the item is cancelled; however, no one can seem to tell me why the charge for the back ordered item was denied. :confused3 They say everything is fine. I guess someone just made a mistake.

It's odd one of my rules of credit card use is NEVER give a card number to someone who calls me. There are just too many scams out there and too many illegitimate ways someone could get your order information.

Since the item is no longer back ordered and you verified that the original order was canceled I would just re-order the item. Some what of a pain but I definitely think you were right in not giving your credit card number over the phone.
