Do you think this is terribly tacky?

I must admit I thought of doing this! I wanted a pink one soooo bad, but this was right when IPOD minis came out, so the pink ones were nowhere to be found. I bought a green one instead. On dh's bday I wanted to get him the pink one and 'exchange' but I figured he would never use the green one. So, I bought him the silver one and still secretly lust for a pink one...

OMG..kindred spirits we are. I did the EXACT same thing!

If you go to the Apple store, not Best Buy or Circuit City, but an Apple store. (Check apple.com for autorized stores). I work at a school, so I got an educator discount. Also on the apple website there is an education link, then k-`12, then you use a zip code/state finder for your students school. If your school is listed, you can receive a discount.

I got a $30 discount on a 3rd gen 20g, and got a $50 discount for a 30 g photo.

Are the student discounts somewhere else? I only see a discount for people that either work in the school, on school board or PTO officer.

I sure wish I had the money to justify it. How petty am I? I could use the green one for the car only, and the pink one for the treadmill and on airplanes...when my kids aren't with me, you know, once every other year? Yeah, I sure wish I could just go and get me a pink one. They are just so much cuter!

The last time I looked that is where they were. Let me look and see. I'll post a link either to sign up or info.

THere used to be a category there for K-12 student and k-12 teacher. I apologize that isn't there anymore.

I did however, just type in my zip and picked a school near my house (not my childrens school). All it stated was that I could only buy one ipod per year, one pc per year and and a few other big items per academic year. (mon itors, pcs, etc.)There was a statement of eligibility that stated this.

Statement of Eligibility
I represent that I am a member of one of the defined groups above eligible to purchase and that the products being purchased direct from Apple Computer, Inc. are for my own personal, education, and/or research use.

I know at my actual local apple store--Marlton NJ they will just take an ID (student or teacher) for proof of eligibility. I've bought all my stuff in person, not online. With my ID, I have bought 3 different ipods.

I don't know if they will have better luck in person at the store, or if they just need to call Apple customer service and ask what type of student proof they need for online orders. They may say none, or they may require a copy of the student ID faxed or something to them. Like I said, my Marlton NJ store just needs an ID and they copy it there in the store. I'm not certain who's policy is "firmer" the store or online, since I've never ordered online.

Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone. I am going to do it. He will just be happy to get his own and not borrow hers all the time.

I think it sounds like the perfect solution - unless DH decides HE likes the pink one better! :teeth:

What dad wouldn't be thrilled with this idea? He gets an iPod, and a chance to be a hero to his little girl! I would do this in a heartbeat--I'm sure they'll both be SOOO glad you did!

I don't think it is tacky at all.......but I would also pick up a little something else for him too, or perhaps a nice evening out. After all one way or another he is getting an IPOD, perhaps get him a gift card from itunes so he can download some more music on DD,s/his new silver IPOD :sunny:

I agree with getting him an itunes gift card! I have itunes on my computer at work and I got a gift certificate as a "stocking stuffer" for Christmas from my dh - I loved it!
I say go for it! :)

Thanks Cindy! If you go into the student discounts it shows the mini listed for $179, so I quess it just shows the discounted price. There is a store close and our school is listed so we'll have to check it out. My 13yo is wanting one for her birthday but I quess we can just have her buy it. :)

Speaking from a dad's point of view(whose daddy's little girl- now 21- is the apple of his eye) I say it is an absolutely GREAT idea. :)
