I've lived in 4 different states and never seen one that goes back that late, maybe some in the NE still do? I think that's pretty much out of style now, though. Growing up in the south, we usually went back early/mid August. Here in Colorado, it's the very beginning of August (actually July 31 next year because of how the dates fall) But we usually get out before Memorial Day, which is nice.
So by mid October we are already done with first quarter. As both a teacher and parent, I can tell you that break is much needed! It is not a new thing for our school district, it's been that way for 15 years or more.
I have read that in the past few years the fall has gotten busier, but I thought that a lot of that was being attributed to F&W, and the influx of locals it brings. Plus the free dining that's been offered then, But if more schools are starting fall breaks, that may have an impact as well. Still don't think it will reach anything like summer crowds though.
