Do you think "The Rule" is silly?

I think the notion of it being a RULE, is lame. But I have no problem with anyone quoting the first post. I admit I roll my eyes when I see somebody pointing out they're following the "new rule" when they quote the OP...just do it...don't make to-do about it.
That's true. When they point out the new rule it's kinda snarky. Like using the popcorn guy popcorn:: as your response.

It's always appeared to me that the new rule was all about 'catching' someone in a negative light and then be able to bash them to death with the 'proof'. I have no idea if that was the intent or not but that's how it comes across to me.
Not too long ago I started a thread that was about a very painful issue in my life. I have to admit when the first poster copied me I didn't take their words of consolation seriously. When I saw the quote my first feeling was they were only posting so that they could be sure and copy my post so I couldn't change my mind and delete it, not because they gave two hoots about me or my situation.
First time I've ever posted anything quote worthy I guess but I found it wasn't pleasant even though I had no intention of deleting or editing it.

ITA :thumbsup2

so sorry you felt that way I understand

I understand that some people post to be a troll however I know that for me I won't stoop to their level by engaging in their drama of it...so why quote them that is WHAT they want...

but when you disagree which is fine say you disagree and why but that doesn't give anyone the right to bash that person b/c they don;t see it from your point of view ..I mean we are all different and what works one person doesn't always work for another. We as adults need to respect everyone's opinions and to have some class as to not bash when they don't come to your way of thinking..

example - I posted about something quite sometime ago and someone didn't like it (which is fine) but they took so much time and effect to come up with some proof (something I post before that) and posted a link to that thread however they didn't take the time to read what was posted b/c it was opposite of what they said I said ..I thought it was funny really..but my point is that person choose to try and be as vicious and mean as possible b/c I didn't live my life the way they wanted me too. So they decided to bash me instead of just stating that they disagree and why and just leave it at that..

I like the "New Rule". I got my first tag just from posting on the thread about the new rule. :rotfl: I think it was meant sort of as a joke, because so many people were going back and changing or deleting their original posts just because everyone didn't agree with them. I never took it seriously to be a "rule" and heck, I can never remember to quote the OP anyway. I can't believe it rubs anyone the wrong way!

I respect the fact that you don't understand that it rubs people the wrong..however if you ahve something that rubs you the wrong and someone comes behind you say "I can't believe you are upset about that" and it is something that means a lot to you don't you think that would upset that they don't at least understand that it might be a bigger deal to you than them? that is all I'm trying to say...we can all stand to have a little more understanding instead of always bashing :wizard:

I've always taken it as something that was said in a joking manner. Obviously the person that came up with the "new rule" doesn't have the authority to make a real rule on here. All the comments that people make about the rule seem more like a continuing joke than actual badgering, in my opinion. No one really thinks it's an actual rule, or that anyone is truly obligated to follow it. Some threads are certainly more entertaining and interesting when people do follow the new rule, though! :rotfl:
.

 Good Grief. I'm sorry you felt you needed to "explain" it to me. I understand it's "supposed" to be funny, that doesn't change my opinion that it's presumptious and that people are badgering.

Just because someone doesn't think something is funny doesn't mean they aren't capable of "getting" it.:confused3

I find it absolutely comical. I have better things to worry about than if someone edits their original post. Just my two cents...

JIC things get a little crazy and the whole first page of posts gets deleted.

Sorry, but I won't be following that rule.

If someone deletes their post, they deleted it for a reason whether I agree with it or not. I won't be joining in the "ha ha gotcha" crowd. There are enough threads here for me to read so not to be fixated on finding out what someones deleted post said.

Sometimes people post things because they are upset. Perhaps they have a little (or a whole lot) too much personal info there, and realize that after the fact. Then they go back and try to delete it, but someone has already copied the first post. I think the best way to not have that happen, is to think before you post. I (IMO) see way too much personal info posted here, from childrens (adult or young) personal problems, in-laws, work related. I often think to myself, what were they thinking..that is such private info (and if it was me they were posting about, they would soon be my ex friend, although you can't dump a parent who is posting your personal info, you're sort of stuck with them). I have PM'd people suggesting they have giving too much info, but I'm usually told, it's ok, the person knows I'm posting it). So I can understand why some people will go back to old posts and try to solve the problem by deleting it. Some info is so much so, that some can actually figure out who the person is talking about. Just not good.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to explain why you should "get it". I was simply explaining my take on it. It hadn't occurred to me to be bothered by people calling it a "rule" because it never crossed my mind to take it seriously. Of course different people find different things funny, and that's a good thing. But some people on the thread seem so bothered by the fact that people call it a rule, it seemed as though they were taking it far more seriously than I do, so I thought I'd share my opinion. :)

new rule!!

(much like the pirates code, its more of a GUIDELINE actually!):lmao:

I for one love the new rule. If an OP doesn't like what people are saying, just don't open the thread again!! This isn't your office, if Grumpy Pirate (first name that came to mind) hurts my feelings I don't have to talk to him everyday.

Good clue for when it needs to be quoted anytime you see the following
did I over react
Was I in the wrong
how do you feel
what would you do
Should I have done this
My child _________

that would be the offensive thread!!!:cool2:

NEW RULE....popcorn::

ya wants some RUM with that popcorn?

hehehehehe

like another poster pointed out, its also a bit tongue-in-cheek.

That's the whole point. It's for entertainment value. It's not a serious thing.

Frankly, all of us have better things to do that hang around the CB on the DIS. I don't see how announcing disinterest in anything that goes on here makes one superior. ;)

Side note: I once got my post quoted under the "new rule". It cracked me up! It's a testament to the DIS that anyone thought a thread about a gift for my nephew could devole into controversy.
I can't believe it took 26 posts for someone to mention that it's meant to be silly and all in good fun! :)

The new rule came about, partially because there were SOME posters that would post something very controversial, then when the majority of the posters would disagree, they would argue their point.

When they couldn't seem to bring people to their point of view, instead of just "walking away" they would completely change the first post to something inane.
::yes:: Or, even without completely changing it, they'd just change a few "facts" in the OP, making it seem that the responses were overly critical.

Nothing wrong with wanting a clear history of what people are responding to. :confused3 :rotfl:

I can't believe it took as many posts for "us" to have to explain we know it's meant to be "silly and fun" but that some of us don't see it as that. And too many times, it really doesn't turn out like that.

I was all for the rule, when the rule was initially implemented. However, the rule turned from being funny, so we could see why a thread got locked - to cementing the things people say, to torment them with.

That's where (I) don't like it. I hate seeing posters backed into corners. It bothers me.

Hmmmm...

Just like people that purposely get a thread locked by going on and posting argumenative things so they can report them after getting replys?

Simply because they don' like the subject matter or the point of view of the OP?

Is that what you are talking about?:rolleyes1
