Do you think the Duggers are really saving money shopping at Aldis?

I just watched the Duggers new show on living thrifty and saw them doing their shopping at Aldis. My question to you all is. Do you think they save more money buying so much at Aldis over, clipping the coupons and shopping the other grocery stores sales and stocking up that way? I do shop at Aldis, but it is for the milk, eggs, cheese and bread mainly. The items that you usually don't get coupons for and that the regular stores don't put on a good sale.

What's everyone's thoughts on this?

I thought the same thing while watching their show last week. I know Aldi's has less expensive, off brand grocery items, but coupons can really work to their advantage. It takes time and effort to use coupons to get free or nearly free items, and it helps if there are "double coupon" stores in the area (I don't know if there are where they live).

And, perhaps they use coupons on some items and the show didn't explore that idea. After all, it was only one shopping trip.

I think they do. Aldis is less expensive than my local grocery stores . I hope that they eat some fresh, healthy food along with all the processed crap they buy, though .

That's a good question! I wonder if, using coupons, their savings would be minimal because there's a limit on how many items you can get for sale with a coupon? I didn't see the show so I don't know how much stuff they were getting. I imagine it would be a LOT ...

I think they do. They buy pallets full of food when they go shopping. I doubt they would be able to get the quantity of coupons needed to buy enough of one item. Also, I think they have specific shopping days. With coupons you have to watch and go when the item is on sale.

I'm betting that they do save at Aldi's vs. a regular grocery store ... I just don't think couponing would work well for a family of their size b/c they need such large quantities.

However, I wonder how Gordon Food Services or a wholesale club would work for them? I mean, they could probably actually use up one industrial size can of corn in one meal.

I bet JimBob has it all figured out though ... he's one thrifty guy.

Well of course they save Big- showing the stores name on their show probably gives them a huge discount.

I am sure they searched out the bulk stores and went with the one that gives them the best discount.

Yup!! You can't beat their prices. And they seriously have the best spiral ham ever!!!! I just spent $70 there on Saturday.....we majorly stocked up!

Aldi is still cheaper for staples. Sure, at some supermarkets if you have a coupon and its on sale it may be cheaper, but unless you have tons of coupons for that one item everything after that one isn't as cheap as Aldi.

I think they do, because of the volume of groceries they need. My local grocery stores will accept only 1 or 2 of the same coupon, so if you needed, for instance 15 cans of pineapple, it wouldn't help you to only use coupons for 1 or 2 of the cans, and have to pay full price for the others.

This is so funny...there is new construction by my house and they FINALLY put up a sign saying "Coming soon---Aldi's convenience store" and my DH and I are like "That stinks. Never even HEARD of Aldi's" but I guess I have something to look forward to now!

Maybe they should make it a jurisdiction for one of the girls to sit down & figure it all out - coupons vs. Aldi!

Glad you all have nice Aldi's - ours is horrendous - filthy & full of junk. I wish I could find a nice one close enough to make it worth my while.

I agree about the local Aldi's. The one that used to be on Lehigh St was just plain dirty and I refuse to venture into the one in the city. The "discount grocery" that replaced the Lehigh St Aldi's is beyond nasty. I was killing time in that area the other week and went in to check it out. OMG the smell was sickening . I literally ran out of the store trying not to gag. Luckily the one by my parent's house is clean, so I go there every once in a while.

Well- I have six kids, not 18, but I find Aldis to be the best bet for a large family. I buy huge quantities, and I can't wait around for coupons- Our stockpile gets eaten too quickly. Plus its just easier to buy stuff by the case and not have to make a million brand choices. I do subscribe to a CSA for additional fresh local fruit and veggies.

There are some items I buy at Aldi and some I don't. I buy canned fruit, especially, and I save a lot on that. Also buy rice, frozen burritos, frozen chicken kiev, and snack size chips. Sometimes milk, bread, granola bars, eggs. . .my cart is always full when I leave and I'm always amazed at how low the total is. But again, I only buy certain items.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner! Same with Dixie Stampede--it's pretty cheap when they let the 18 of you in for free!

My one and only visit to Aldi's convinced me that it would cost me money.

The place was DIRTY, "frozen" was more of a theory then a fact etc..... Looked to me like I was buying stuff that would be ruined. That's a waste!
