I think it's a reflection of the Kinsey scale with one end being exclusively heterosexual and the other being exclusively homosexual with a wide span inbetween of people who can swing either way depending upon circumstances.
IOW, not all or even most women are 4-5 drinks away from fulfilling male lesbian fantasies any more than all or even most men are 4-5 drinks away from fulfilling female slash fantasies. Some women can look at another woman and see her physical beauty without thinking she is hot (hot=sexually attractive), just as some men can look at another man and see that he is handsome without wanting to drop trou.
What I think the difference is that it's socially acceptable in our culture for women to admit that they find another woman hot because (1) our cultural objectification of women in terms of sexual attractiveness and (2) the underlying yet pervasive acceptance of the male fantasy about two straight women having sex which is considered both hot and unthreatening.
I disagree with this 100%.
