Do You think DISNEY has gone down hlll the last few years?

That was in July wasn't it? No free dining, right? I am not real sure, though. I wouldn't think 83 percent is a terrible occupancy rate. As far as the Priceline thing, I have booked nice resorts through them many times. No different than the other travel sites, imo.

Disney annual financial report: Disney World, DVC salvage 2008
Walt Disney World — posted by scottpowers on November, 24 2008 10:56 AM
Discuss This: Comments Off | Add to del.icio.us | Digg it Walt Disney World enjoyed a 2 percent increase in attendance during the company’s 2008 fiscal year, a big dropoff from the 6 percent and 5 percent growth seen in previous years — but still better than the flat attendance experienced at Disneyland in California

“The real problem for Disney becomes what happens if the economy does not begin to recover in the near future,” they write. “Meaning Disney laps the benefit from these successful strategies, leading to a continued slide in 2010 revenues and profitability; implying that 2009 will NOT be the trough by any means for the parks.”
The Pali analysts also say they are concerned that big swings in foreign currency rates will lead to a “notable drop” in international travel to Orlando in the coming year. The analysts say foreign travel to Disney – which is particularly valuable because the travelers spend more and stay longer – has increased from 13 percent to 20 percent since Sept. 11, 2001, but now appears likely to fall “significantly” over the next 12-to-24 months.

The drop off of people staying doesn't surprise me.Alot of the disney rooms are way outta hand when it comes to pricing.Three ,four and five hundred dollar rooms is nuts. Then add 12.5 % tax and it is a bad combo.I think their constant price raising is catching up with them.I am really curious to see what happens when the free food thing quits.Should be interesting!

Hey Flicx!

Maybe they will introduce another buy 4 get 3 FREE nights at Disney. We did this in 2009 along with the $200 gift card and it was great. I'm sure more incentives would come out if they want to keep the occupancy rate hovering around 83 percent.

we also did the buy 4, get 3 free, with the gift card. great deal!
It seem Disney is concentrating on KEEPING guests ONSITE. (good plan, actually). and that is why the ticket prices keep going up. we are lured in with the onsite discounts.
now, I haven't thought about this much, but what if disney started chargingfor the fast pass for off site guests?
it would lure more guests to stay on property, bring in a litttle more money from off site guests, and be more of a "perk" for those of us who stay onsite.

however (now that I'm thinking about it), it would persuade more offsite guests to go to other parks. so maybe it wouldn't be so good.

I know there are frequent posters on this particular thread who like to stay off site. just throwing the thought out there. for comments.
(because it's OK to disgaree on a discussion board!:rotfl:)

We took advantage of the same offer when we stayed at the YC in January 2009. If something like that were to come up again, I'd book it in a heartbeat. ;)

Hi Brunette, I wish they would just go back to regular discounting by the night. You know the way they used to.They would send you a postcard with a rate on it.We used to always take advantage of that.If they are gonna do the discount sites and offer super deals I know they must really be in a bad way.Could be some major league discounts on the way!

Hi Smidgey!

You make some valid points. But maybe if they reduced their resort pricing to, say 50 percent then more people will come, more people will spend (food, souveniers) in the parks I would imagine. As stated by you and Goofy4Prez and myself we all booked room when they had the buy 4 GET 3 FREE deal along with the FREE $200 gift card. You really couldn't beat it. I think we paid approximately $1700.00 a week for 2 adults including 2 one day tickets (we're annual pass holders) at the Contemporary Magic Kingdom view TOWER. And we got the $200 bucks as a gift card! The 2 tickets we applied that to our annual pass renewal! It was a steal!

Hey guys!

Seriously busy 2 weeks - son had his surgery, and ear tubes have been safely removed, so hopefully, no more surgeries for my baby boy!

I haven't been on the boards too much, so I'm getting caught up on a few things. I think the Priceline thing is no big deal, as they aren't doing the Name Your Price program. It makes sense, since they've been with Expedia and Travelocity for years.

I am sure I'm going to get yelled at, but I really don't want Disney giving rooms, food or packages away at all. Everytime they 'give' something away, whether it be free or seriously discounted, it costs us all. I don't want Disney giving anything for a steal - sure it's good on a personal basis, but on an overall basis, it's not good. I'd much rather them do small discounts for certain time periods, eliminate buffet surcharges, AP room discounts more often, etc.

Should they lower prices? Perhaps a bit, but I don't think they need to make Disney affordable for all families to attend. They are high in certain areas, but I don't think that every family needs to stay in Deluxe rooms. Disney has rooms within a bunch of ranges, so there are pricepoints to suit many families. Sure, you can get rooms cheaper off-site, but off-site is not on-site. They have to discount in order to draw people away from Disney. Disney may need to discount as their numbers are down, but remember, they have very high expectations at Disney. They announce that profits are down, and people think it means that they didn't make money, and that is far from the truth! Disney's lower profits are still in the billions, so that's still high.

Not sure what the right answer is, but I really don't like them constantly discounting. Sure it's good for individual families, but it's not good for the company on a whole. We see this with DVC - Disney overbooks Value rooms, and then sends families to our DVC rooms for no charge. These rooms then see wear and tear, and who pays for that? This normally would come out of our dues, so not sure how they handle this? Also, with more people in the parks during discount periods, that means more maintenance in parks, resorts and restaurants, and I'm not sure Disney can keep up at times.

Disney's occupancy rate was down 8% during that period, but that was during a slower spring season. I can guarantee that during the summer, these numbers were up. I was there for our normal 2 weeks at beginning of July, and all resorts we stayed at were at full capacity, so I assume that they made some of that up over the summer. Also, Disney has future bookings, so perhaps their numbers are down for the holidays too?

It's all very interesting, Tiger :)

Wow, in an outright field of nothing but negative, whiny threads, I'm still the one stirring the pot.

Well, at least I only speak the truth. :goodvibes

I was kidding. That's what makes the internet difficult as a communication tool. Sorry my message was misinterpreted.

Tiger, I am glad the surgery went well. I tend to agree with you a lot... Just so know not everyone is flaming. Lol.

According to Disney, it was for the previous Year. which would have been May 09- May 10 so unfortunately it does include the busy summer season.

For those of you who think Disney has not declined. Let me ask you would you go to disney if they offered NO discount? If you had to pay rack rate and pay for your food would you think it worth the money?

Thanks - surgery went very well. I just think that Disney has set up a discount culture, and now most guests expect discounts all around. When people expect things, then you have a new set of problems to deal with.

Thanks for the clarification - I read it quickly, and thought it was just a quarterly report. In that case, I'm not sure if 8% is a lot compared to other hotels? For Disney, it's a lot, but I wonder what other Orlando hotels percentages were? The thing is, that despite lots of discounts, Disney was still down, so not sure that discounting is the end all and be all answer? You have lots of other vacation destinations that are also heavily discounting too such as cruises, beach resorts, etc., so people are going elsewhere, and then there are people who are not going to Disney or anywhere else for that matter.

I would still go to Disney without any discounts - we did it for years. We bought DVC though as we saw a greater savings that way, as we wouldn't pay $700.00+ for 1 bedroom villas. We had lots of Disney vacations without any discounts. Now, food would be different though, as I feel that this is the area where Disney has gone downhill quite a bit. We have been paying cash for food for years, but we purchase TIW card and get our 20% discount, but we would be more selective though and do less buffets during surcharge season.

Tiger :)

I'm glad to see this thread again. It's a great one IMO.

As for Priceline, I see nothing wrong with WDW being on that site in the regular reserve your room area. I've used Expedia many times and have gotten rooms at WDW there a few times. They aren't necessarily the cheapest route but it's a good place to check.
