Do you think a golf cart/car rental is necessary if staying @ Fort Wilderness

Well I believe I finally believe I convinced my sister to stay at one of the park resorts and she is interested in Fort Wildneress because of the additional rooms but now she is worried about getting around the place. We have checked out some maps and the place does look pretty big so now she is debating about the golf cart/car rental. She tried a few other resorts but they are not available for the travel dates she wants which of course leaves her with this. Thanks for all the help!

It really depends on your budget and level of convenience required. It is possible to get around FW and WDW using the bus system or other available transportation.

We pull a TT so have always had a car with us at FW. We have done trips where we never used it at all except to go get groceries. You can do it if you don't mind buses and allow ample time to get around.

These days we're "old and lazy" and prefer to steer clear of the buses, so we generally take the car anywhere a boat/monorail can't get us.

As for the golf cart...
This is the first year we've rented one. All our trips have been in the 300/500 - a short walk to buses and the Marina/Settlement - and we didn't mind a little extra walking in the past.

Again fast-forward to "old and lazy"... :rotfl:
We LOVED having the cart this year. We were in 300 again, and used it to go get ice, do laundry, go refill our mugs, go to the bigger/better Meadows Trading Post, and of course to hop over to the marina to catch a boat. So nice to have with all the miles of walking we already do in the parks every day.

But the best part of the cart was "looping" - just grabbing a beverage and taking a tour around FW. Since we were there in Dec., nighttime Christmas decoration cruises were a must and loads of fun.

Also depends on the ages of those going. We had small children when we rented the cabins..in the heat and humidity of August, the golf cart was a God send. Although as convenient as I found them, renting from Disney is ridiculous. There have been those who have rented from outside companies that have been very happy with the service and the price.
We found the carts were a great way to get us around the resort.

A golf cart sure would be nice for getting from transportation to the campsite after a long day of parking. We just can't justify the price, even the off site ones, since it would sit all day and only get a couple trips a day. But we spend almost all of our awake time at the parks. If we spent more time in the campground, I would want it more, but it would still be hard to justify a few hundred bucks for it.

We did it without a cart in 2006 and will again in 7 days. Your not ever too far away from a bus stop.

nah..especially with the economy the way it is today it would be a waste of money. People say the only thing america is really rich in today is obesity. Save money loose weight, dont be lazy bring bikes!:cheer2:

Oh....can I be there when you tell your sister not to be lazy and fat and ride a bike! Come on..please?:rotfl:
I have a feeling family get togethers won't be the same!:rolleyes1

We've stayed at Fort Wilderness many times and we've never rented a golf cart or felt the need to have one. I find that the bus transportation is very convenient. However, we stay in the camping loops (which are generally closer to the campfire, pool, and settlement area), which may make some difference since we could walk to those areas if we chose to. A golf cart might be more useful if you were in the cabins, which are a bit further away, but I still don't think it's necessary.

I have stayed at Fort Wilderness several times and have only rented a cart for one day, on my last visit, and though I really enjoyed looping with it, it is hardly a necessity. I have always stayed in 1800 until this last trip, which is one of the most remote loops, and always found the buses to be perfectly workable. I would try to get a cart for a day when you are spending the whole day at the fort and use the buses for the rest of the trip.

I agree with Shanta. On my last trip I rented one for 2 days and had a blast with it, but spent those entire 2 days at the Fort and rode the stew out of it. Once I turned it in, I used my bike to get around and parked the bike at the Outpost or Settlement while I was at the parks. For my trip in April, I am renting one for the full 4 days, but I'm bringing a friend with me who hasn't been to Disney in 30 years, and it's kind of a treat. When Rick (DH) comes with me he uses an ECV, so he rides the ECV along the sidewalks around the Fort and I ride my bike.

When we were there at the end of December and the beginning of January we were in the 800 loop and didn't feel we needed a cart. We walked and used the buses. We got along fine. Besides $54 a day seemed too expensive.

Been going to the Fort since the 70's and this past December was the first time to rent a golf cart. We wanted to loop the Christmas lights.
If one has the money, it's great for getting to and from. But it is truly a luxury.:drive:
The next trip, back to the bike or bus depending on the plans. The bus system is excellent.
FYI, you can drive your car over to the Meadows Trading Post, but parking spot, not even a lot, is for only 15 minutes, but helps if you need a few goodies.
As suggested, 1 or 2 day rental, if they are available, is a lot of fun.
You'll have a great time whether your a la cart or cartless.

If you guys like to jog, run, or ride bikes FOR FUN, then you probably don't need a cart.;)

If you are like my family...after averaging 7 miles a day walking in the parks we love to see that cart patiently waiting when we get off the boat/bus!:hyper:

Ditto! :p

We've also found that the longer the stay at FW, the more handy the cart is for things like going to do laundry, get ice, picking up eggs at the trading post, etc.. It's also a lot easier to justify the cost. The company we rented from has a monthly rate of $500. We were there for 20 days, so it averaged out to only $25/day.

Hi!

I've reserved a golf cart for the week of June 27th but the cost is really bugging me. My main concern is trying to get to the parks before they open. I figured a golf cart would help get us to the park buses/MK boat faster than the internal buses. Is this true? Should I waste the money just for the early morning ease? Does anyone know of a reputable off-site golf rental service to compare rates?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I wouldn't go without my cart. After a fun day at the parks it is nice to sit down and get up at your door. As for the prices that's why I have my own also the other places we camp allow carts so we use it all summer. One of the places we go allows colf carts on the streets in town. Thats a blast crusing the town on a golf cart especially on hollicays when the yard sales are out. Just have to make several trips back to the camper to drop stuff off.
