Do you tell people when they are on speaker phone?

My mom is 58 years old however she needs hearing aids. There's this thing that if you've got an iPhone there is a way for hearing aids to connect directly with your phone and you just speak out loud like normal (so she was told when she got the hearing aids). My mom doesn't have an iPhone but she does have this device that goes around her shoulders sitting on her collar bone and has a microphone on it.

Whenever possible (though it's when she's in private not out and about in public or around other people out of respect for other people since there is a lot of other distractions going on that can impact the call for the person she is calling due to how she would be calling them) she'll use that device (which is bluetoothed to her phone and hearing aids) and then the other person's voice goes right through to her hearing aids without the phone needing to be up to her ear. It is basically like being on a speaker on the receiving end at least and yes I can tell that she doesn't have the phone right up to her ear due to the noise and slight echo (though that's only when the connection isn't the best). It's what feels the most comfortable for her due to her need for hearing aids. It's a lot less comfortable for her to bring the phone device to her ears. She'll always notify me though if she's called me using that device.

Interesting. My husband has hearing aids but doesn't use speaker phone. I do, however, shoo him out of a public place when his phone rings, LOL. He talks loud and you can actually hear the person on the other end.

Who talks on speaker phone in public? I'd find that weird as part of my private life, and a serious breach of confidentiality in my work life. I mean, it's not as if I've never seen anyone do it, but by and large, it's been inconsiderate teenagers. I don't really expect more polite actions from them.

I will tell folks they're on speaker if someone else is in the room, otherwise no. But if you call me at work, just assume you're on speaker. Sorry, I don't stop typing/working for anyone.

I am on the phone a lot. I don't use the speaker out in stores and the like. When I do have someone on speaker and alone I don't mention it. When someone is around me I always tell them and tell them who I am with. Weather I know the caller or not.

I've only used it a work. I do tell them I'm putting them on speaker phone and also tell them who else is in the office with me.

I don't use speaker phone unless I'm in the car, and the only people I answer for while driving are DH or my kids. I don't get why people use speaker phone in public at all. I think it rude.

I have to agree. No one else wants to hear your conversation. And for the love of alll things holy, don't use your speaker phone in a cube farm! :sad2:

Generally speaking, I tell people when they are on speaker phone if others are present. I don't really use speaker phone in public, though. So, the amount of people that would hear them is very limited.

This does not apply to customer service reps. I almost always have them on speaker phone. I use to answer customer service calls all the time and can't think of a reason that I would have cared, besides it being harder to hear.

I only use speaker phone if I am using sync in the car. I will always tell people if someone is with me. I will tell people I don't talk to often, but my family knows I always use sync in the car.

I wonder how many people realize that when they are on speaker inside their car (bluetooth) that it often broadcasts outside the car. Very often I walk by a car in a parking lot or on the street and I can hear their conversations very loudly....even if their windows are closed.

I wouldn't use speaker if I were in public. I use speaker when I'm driving and sometimes when I'm somewhere where I want someone to say "hi" or multiple people are talking - but it's always in someone's home or car. In that case, I always start with "Hi! You're on speaker so be nice." :)

It's funny you mention that. The other day I was out and about with my mom shopping and it was a nice day so a lot of people had their car windows down. Anyways we're getting back in the car and this lady is pulling out of her parking spot across the aisle while at the same time having her car call someone; she had her driver's window down. OMG that ring was SOOOOO loud I can only imagine how loud the phone conversation was going to be if the person who was being called picked up the call.

I tell them if someone else is around me; however, I only use speaker in the car or at home.

I was coming out of the doctor's office the other day and a lady was in the lobby talking on the phone and it was on speaker. She was reaming out her cousin who was in her words the baby daddy of her best friend. I swear I wanted to stick around and here the rest. I got so tickled listening to that conversation. Apparently he was a no good mother ****er. I was rolling!!:rotfl2:

*shudders* I detest speakerphone. It's so rude. Either you have the time to make this phone call your #1 priority, or you don't. If you don't, that's cool - CALL ME BACK LATER.

The only time it's appropriate in my mind is a conference call. In a boardroom.

I don't really use speaker phone in public. - In fact, I honestly forget I have speaker phone sometimes.

I really should practice using it, because it would actually be convenient in certain situations (for example, DH often calls me as he commutes home, using his in-car speaker phone). - I'm sure I look pretty funny folding laundry with the phone in the crook of my neck.

But what can I say? - I never claimed to be "tech-y", and phones still had cords when I first started using them. :rolleyes1
