I always shovel the walk, even if it's just a dusting. It is a city ordinance (not that they do anything about it if people don't shovel). Beyond that, I think it's important to shovel so people can walk on the sidewalk. Mail carriers walk in my city, and I would feel terrible if we didn't shovel and someone got she slipped and got hurt trying to deliver our mail. I walk from my house to the bus stop each morning, and I should be able to walk on the sidewalk all the way down the street.
Just a couple of pet peeves about people's shoveling habits:
I hate it when people leave do not shovel all the way to their neighbors walk. Someone who lives down the street from me left about four feet of pavement left to be shovelled, and now it is ice. Would it have really taken that much more effort to shovel the extra few feet?
I also hate it when people shovel their snow onto the street after the plows have finished plowing the street. I know people who have lost mufflers on iced over snow thrown on the street.
