There is a Goodwill store in Bradenton on SR70 just west of I75 which only sells books. The place is like a library with individual rooms for different subjects. The staff are very helpful and the books are great value for money. They even have a drive through for donations!

I hate wading through clothing. Most of the clothing I buy is something that jumps out at me. I won't stop and look through racks of clothes unless I am absolutely desperate. That's true for a thrift store or a high end department store. Just not my thing.

i LOOOOVE the america's thrift store! before DH's company started supplying uniforms, i could go there and get a buggyful of jeans for him to wear to work for less than $20! good stuff too-levi's, polo, tommy hilfiger, arizona jean company...he was the best dressed guy in the plant, lol, and if the jeans had an ink-stain or something on them, it didn't matter b/c he only wore them to work. i've also gotten DD's jeans there-limited too, levi's, gap, old navy. we spent less than $20 for an armload of jeans that she wore all last winter. my mom found my 16 yo cousin a billabong hoodie there-it had a stain on it but she took it home and treated the stain, gave it a wash and it was good as new! my mom is the BEST garage sale-thrift store bargain hunter, she can find ANYTHING!

I use to, but our Goodwill has gotten so expensive that I do better shopping sales. I also use to shop yardsales all the time, but the last few I have been to have been so high that I have pretty much stopped going.

I think Platos closet is really expensive too. Hoodie were $12 and $14 and I can get them at Hollister and American Eagle outlet stores new for cheaper than that.

Most of the ones in my daughters school (grade school) make fun of the kids wearing the target/walmart clothing. My friend bought her daughter a jacket at walmart but told her it was from kohls because she knew she would go to school and say "look at my new jacket my mom bought it at walmart" even though she tells her not to tell and then she gets made fun of!

------------------------------

Sounds like both mom and daughter need a lesson in self-esteem.. Sad that a mom would lie to her child over something so insignificant - and even sadder that the child has such low self-esteem (based on something as ridiculous as where her clothing is purchased) that she isn't able to deal with peer pressure.. What else will that poor child succumb to in order to "fit in"? :sad2:

Do people really sell used undergarments at trift stores and garage sales :scared:

I shop at Goodwill from time to time because they get all of Targets clearanced out merchandise. Its all new but they do get the salvaged stuff thats damaged so you have to be careful.
------------------

Yes - they really do - although I would never purchase those items used..

I actually prefer garage sales to thrift stores - and I don't think I have ever been inside a Goodwill store.. While in Florida, my brother's girlfriend took me to some thrift shops in the Vero Beach area that had brand new, best brand clothing - with tags still on them - for $2 or less.. Too bad I didn't bring more luggage with me..:rotfl:

Do you seriously think that a child would walk up to another child at school and say---Hey, that's my shirt!! Unless you personally hand make every one of your piece of clothing, I'm willing to bet someone, somewhere has the exact same thing your child does.
Not a child, but I have to relay what happened to me.

I gave away a suit to a battered women's shelter. One suit was very distinctive with a patterned skirt. I almost fell out when I saw someone at work wearing it.

My first thought was that she was a battered woman - didn't have any problem with her having that suit. But on closer observation it turns out that it was NOT my suit. It was bigger than the one I gave away. I would have never said a word to anyone about it though.

I don't buy from second hand stores as it is too much trouble - but I will buy used designer clothing off ebay. No difference really - just easier off ebay.

That really is disgusting- used underwear or used bathing suits :scared1: GROSS!

Well I will agree on the underwear, though it can be washed..I have bought my daughter several swimsuits at the thrift store..BUT..whats the difference if you got hand me downs from a cousin, neighbor??:confused3 You would take them(if needed)throw them in the washing machine and go on with life..

Now again.. the underwear kind of grosses me out, but those are things you wear all day, a swim suit just a few hrs ;)

I really doubt my 7 yr old will get made fun of at school for having walmart clothes--they grow out of them so fast I am not paying for Tommy, or Polo-now when they are 75% off and my sister can use her dillards discount then we can talk-- maybe when the girls are 12-13 I'll have to change but for now they are doing fine in their comfortable plasyable clothes(and I don't have to worry about it too much if an art project gets out of control!)

alot of churches around here have consignment sales during fall and spring. I shop at them and can get pretty good deals.

Thrift stores and garage sales.. I absolutely hate paying the ridiculous prices I see in the stores.. The only things I won't buy used are under garments, socks, and swim suits..

My mom and I were discussing this once...about selling used clothing. I said that most things are not a big deal, but I'd never buy used undies, that's gross. She said what if you couldn't afford new ones? I said if I ever got to the point where I couldn't, I'd skip a meal each day to pay for them because used undergarments skeeve me out.

I don't shop at the them for several reasons. 1, I think the price is too high for junky clothing. 2. The clothing is junky. There are no good consignment shops in my area. I think anytime something that's pretty nice is dropped off, I think the employees pull it for their own family, or pull it to sell on eBay. I've heard more and more Goodwill (never liked them anyway - at least not in my area) are going with such practices.

When I go down toward eastern PA to visit family though, there are a few 2nd hand shops in Lancaster that I love.

I would not take used bathing suits from anyone, cousins or neighbors...its gross to me. If I couldn't afford 4-5 new bathing suits at the start of the season I would rather just buy one or 2 but have them be new!

Growing up, we were pretty poor so shopping at thrift/cosignment stores was a lot easier than going to the mall for new clothes.

Now I go there just because I can and you never know what you'll find. One day, I was SERIOUSLY tempted to pick up an LP of Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits (from about 1986 or so) even though I had no idea what I would've done with it when I got home.:rotfl:

Does ordinary laundry detergent kill EVERY kind of germ that can be left behind in a swimsuit? Not trying to be smart here - really don't know. Without knowing it the person who owned the swimsuit could have had a bladder or va****l infection.

If you are worried about killing germs in laundry you can always add vinegar to your wash :thumbsup2

This is one of the most crazy posts I've ever read on the Dis. Do you seriously think that a child would walk up to another child at school and say---Hey, that's my shirt!! Unless you personally hand make every one of your piece of clothing, I'm willing to bet someone, somewhere has the exact same thing your child does.

I have to believe this post is a joke.
Actually, that really has happened. We went to Colorado 11 years ago and my son bought a souvenier t-shirt. He donated it to the local thrift store and a couple of months later a girl in his class wore it to school. I believe that he even told her that it had previously been his.

Plus, I am plus size woman, and a lot of thrift shops, especially in my area since there are a lot perfect size 4's...the "ladies who lunch" types...that I seldom find anything in a consignment shop.
I love to shop at our local thrift store and am excited that a Good Will store is coming just a couple of miles away. I too am plus size and can't find any clothes but I still keep looking. I usually purchase books because I can get them so cheap. When my son moved into an apartment got several kitchen items (corning ware baking dishes, mixing bowls and glasses) to help out. It's fun to buy so much for so little!

I have a question..Has everyone else's Goodwill stopped accepting toys like mine has? I was getting ready to clean out a bunch of my boys old toys - some are like new, and I was told they don't accept toys anymore because of all the recall problems. I literally stopped my plans to clean out the toys because I can't stand the thought of just throwing them away.

I was in Salvation Army the other day and they are still accepting toys, so I guess I will have to schlep all our stuff across town..

Just wondering..

I buy my kids books from Goodwill, I have found some good ones, too. Every once in a while, I find a treasure.

Mine won't accept toys either, which is a shame because I have a ton and they are in really great shape.

I recently got new furniture and called my local Goodwill to see if they would take my old sofa and love seat. She said yes but only if they are in excellent condition. I had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing, I have been in that store and I have seen the used furniture they sell. ITs far from excellent condition.
Anyway I did drop it off since it actually was in great condition, we were just changing the style of the room. I had a ton of toys and she wouldn't take them :sad1:
