Do you remove your rings before cooking?

I notice that on the Food Network shows, some people are ringless and others are wearing one or more. It doesn't seem too sanitary to have your hands touching or mixing food with rings on. Wouldn't bits of food get into the crevices and be hard to remove just by washing your hands?

I also get a laugh the way Rachel Ray tries to carry everything in 1 trip. I don't put stuff from the shelf into a clean dish or bowl that I will be putting food in.

And the way they seem to use the same wood cutting board for everything but meat. How is it cleaned between say tomatoes and parsley?

I don't want to imply that I am a "germaholic" since I know I am not. But these are things I have been noticing, and wondered what others think.

I agree I take my rings off. I must confess it was more so I would not get my diamond dirty :goodvibes . No really I agree it seems food would get caught in it. I also think it is hilarious that Rachel Ray carry's everything. I know when I cook, I am running around grabbing all kinds of things :) .

It depends on what I'm cooking. If I"m throwing a roast in the oven or chicken on the grill, no. If I'm mashing up meatloaf with my fingers, yes.

ditto

I never used to...

But once I was washing dishes and my ring slipped off into the garbage disposal without my noticing...on went the garbage disposal and my ring came out a metal lump..no stone to be found.

Me too! Although I haven't worn my ring in a week because it is still sitting on the toaster oven. Everytime I see it I am cleaning or cooking and say I will put it on when I am done and I still haven't!

You must have been so upset. I keep thinking this is going to happen to me, I always set my ring in the window sill above my kitchen sink. Maybe I will go & move it now :goodvibes

One more reason to wear gloves when washing dishes!

Sorry to hear about your ring.

It's funny you brought this topic up. This is quite a pet peeve of mine. I'm not a germaphobe (sp) by any means, but that's just gross. Just think of all of the dirt that you can't see. :faint: DH laughs at me because I yell "TAKE YOUR RING OFF" when I see anyone preparing food with their hands.

I never have jewelry on when cooking. Then again, DH and I do not wear any jewelry around the house.

I was mixing meatballs by hand and took my ring off and put it on the windowsill. My kitty knocked it into the disposal, I didn't know, and it was ruined. :sad1:

Anyway, one of my pet peeves watching cooking shows is when they wear jewelry. I think it is unsanitary and icky. Shouldn't have on long sleeves or watches either! I like looking at clean hands, trimmed nails and no jewelry.

I'll take off my rings if I'm working with raw meat, otherwise I don't bother. I never even thought of removing my watch but I've never been up to my wrists in food either.

I only take mine off if I am mixing meatloaf or making meatballs.

One more reason to not have a kitty.

Just kidding. My DH's NJ housemates cat has adopted him to the point his housemate says he'll have to take her if he ever moves. I'd have no problem with it as long as he takes care of the pan. :cat:
