Do they know it's Christmastime? I loved that song.:) I can still see the video or hear the song and get goosebumps listening to it.:) My SO heard it tonight and could NOT believe it was a Christmas song. He's never heard the song before. I told him I remember in, I believe 1984 or 1985, that song was played A LOT. He must've slept those years or something.;)

Anyone else love that song?:) I know, I know, it's too early for Christmas songs. Humor me.;)

Hi,

LOL, I thought you meant the Band-aid commercial jingle. I am stuck on band-aid's cuz band-aids stuck on me!

Yes, I do like the Do They Know It's Christmastime song.

I loved that song too..Band Aid was a very cool concert...I taped the whole thing...but ...used "Beta" tapes...remember those!..of course the machine broke and I can't view the tape! LOL

The song is awesome...but they do say ...
Put your arms around the world at Christmas time..(Boy George sings that part!)
(I liked picking out all of the artists who sing in the song too..

HC

lol Mish19--I thought the EXACT same thing.

But the Band-Aid song from the 80's was great!

Shannon, your SO must have been sleeping VERY soundly all through that Christmas season!!! It was, like, the biggest thing ever, ya know;)

Shhhhh, don't tell but I still get all fuzzy when I hear that song too :o

Holy Cow, I'm sure there's a place in your area that will transfer your Beta's to VHS or even CD or DVD's.:) I love to pick out the artists too. As they were singing, I'd tell my SO who was singing that part.;) I could almost tell him what they were wearing when they filmed the video.;) Boy George's part and Bono's part both are what make the song special, imo.:)

Mish, I love the Hooked On Bandaids song too.;) I sing that to my kids when I'm pulling off their bandaids sometimes. They usually roll their eyes at me when I do that though.:teeth:

LOL! Sorry for the confusion, Debster.:p

Jana, he didn't know that song, but he knows "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" by heart. Must be the redneck in him.:teeth:

"FEED THE WO-O-ORLD...LET THEM KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS TIME..."

It was the cooler European response to "We are the World"... right? (well, I thought it was cooler ;))

I used to love this song!! I remember watching Band Aid on television, back when I was hopelessly in love with Duran Duran!! LOL

I added some music for you, Shannon! :)

LOL, Beanie! I was hopelessly in love w/ Duran Duran, too! :teeth:

I loved this song. I had the 45 and listened to it over & over & over. :teeth:

I heard it on the Music Choice Channel yesterday. :)

Hey,
I loved Duran Duran too! LOL...

Beanie,
Thanks for the song! What a great way to start the day...

Browneyes,
I should try and see if someone would transfer it but the problem is the tape is so old there probably isnt' anything on it any more.
I've had a bunch of my old movies just disappear!

Actually, "We are the World" was the not-as-cool response to BandAid's song. BandAid's song came out in '84 while "We are the World" was released in '85 :)

And yes, BandAid's was much cooler. :) :)

THe song was recorded on November 25, 1985. It was recorded on my birthday.

This is one of my favorit Christmas songs ever. I loved all the bands then, when mostly everyone was saying "Bob Geldof --Who?" "I've never heard of Ultravox!"

I have the 12 inch dance remix version of this with David Bowie doing a narrative on the horrors of Ethopia.

Also Bob Geldof, got knighted from this.. now he is Sir Bob...

Yes, We are the World, was horribly lame! Never liked it!

This is the grandaddy of all cause songs, from this started We are the World, Live Aid, Farm Aid, and all the other things.

please don't forget the message behind the song.

grim statistic: the food pantries and soup kitchens of NYC have seen a 45% increase in demand for their services since the year 2000. I'm certain that's the trend throughout the country.

Yes, that is true BR! I give a lot to charity, throughout the entire year, not just at the holidays.

But really, we don't hear much about the hunger problem in Ethiopia anymore. I know that the problem still exists though.

Like this "group song" much better then the We are the world group song!!

I have this song on a cassette single!!!

Do They Know It's Christmas

(Paul Young)
It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade
(Boy George)
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

(George Michael)
But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard
(Simon LeBon)
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
(Sting) And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
(Bono joins in)
The bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that are ringing
Are clanging chimes of doom
(Bono only) Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you.

(Everyone)
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time.
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

(Paul Young)
Here's to you
raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them
underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Chorus (Everyone)
Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

It was released November of 1984, and immediately debuted at Number One in Great Britain, and was Number One on the American charts two weeks later.. The song was written by Sir Bob Geldof, and sold fifty million copies. It sold over 3 million copies in Great Briton alone. Midge Ure was the co-producer, and he personally accompaned the first relief shipment of over $70,000 worth of food and medical supplies to Ethiopa, March 11, 1985. All produced & remixed by the king - Trevor Horn (The Buggles & Yes).

OH YES! I was obsessed with this song! I still play it over and over every Christmas! :) I got the 45" way back when.

I got especially googely during the Simon LeBon and Bono parts {drool}

I remember trying to record a version of it with my siblings and cousins. We played the record and taped ourselves singing over it. I got SOOO mad because they weren't taking it seriously and kept messing it up! I think we got into such a big fight about it that we got in trouble with my parents. :p Nerds. "You're not Simon LeBon! I'm Simon LeBon! You're only supposed to sing the George Michael part!!" :o

Definitely the coolest of all the "aid" bands/songs.

OMG DocRafiki!! I laughed out loud reading your story!! I am embarassed to admit I did the same thing with my friends way back then! :p

Hey, gotta love the 80's right? :):)

This song is getting HEAVY rotation on my station this season! I love it! It just played about an hour ago.

And yes, BR, lets NEVER forget the reason for it!
