When cleaning my room I discovered two old school readers and one is from the 60's and the other one is from the 70's and I would like to know if you remember having old school readers in your school? The school readers used to have various stories and fables and stories from Greek mythology and Norse mythology as well and in the book I have has a story about Thor and I thought it was amazing

I remember the readers. I also remember from grade 1-3 each classroom had an SRA set we were encouraged to use.
Was the SRA set a bunch of paperback books, where you read a story, then answered a series of questions? And there were about 10 stories per book? And after you successfully completed a certain # of stories, you advanced to the next "Color"? I wish I remember more than that, but I do remember about the advancing and the colors. There was a big competitiveness about what color you were in. Is that the SRA set?

I think that was the same style we had-i remember the colors. I also remember some associated full books, sets really that were on a specific topic and the reading level rose with each subsequent book in the individual set. I remember in 3rd grade reading the set on historical figures which included Luther Burbank, John Audubon and Harriett Tubman which was interesting b/c none of them were really spoken to in our history books at the time.

I also remember that whatever book the teacher read to us aloud each year was the most popular book ordered in our class at that year's scholastic book fair (though there was no 'fair'-it was a paper order form). everyone wanted to try to re-read it for themself-3rd grade was charlotte's web, 4th was charlie and the chocolate factory, 5th was island of the blue dolphins and 6th was a wrinkle in time (I remember getting and reading all but a wrinkle in time-i was not/am not a sci-fi fan).

I remember we had readers, but I cannot remember what they were about. Probably because I didn't actually read them :rotfl2: I remember that we also had phonics books. I don't remember anything besides the book having a purple plaid pattern on it.

anyone else remember going to the doctors/dentists and having your choice of either 'highlights' or 'uncle arthur's' books to read?
I got the Highlights magazine for a while. I was in elementary school, as we resided in the house where I received them through fourth grade. We also got Jack and Jill magazine at some point back then too.

weekly reader anyone?

I remember in the 3rd grade it was a presidential election year and the weekly reader had all of us read a little spiel (3rd grade level) on each of the candidates then we filled out a little ballot which we were told the results of and then they were reported by the teacher to weekly reader's publisher. neither my 3rd grade class NOR the collective 3rd graders who participated across the United States were aligned with the voting adults-

they elected nixon ::yes::

We had Dick/Jane/Sally series when I was in school. Also My Weekly Reader and SRAs. We also did the scholastic book orders- I just loved that, but it was always so hard to decide what books to buy!
