Do you remember Fairway Villas bordering the Lake Buena Vista Gold Course area? I found an old postcard that we had and was wondering what time period this may have been. Anyone know?
When the Disney Institute closed, the Fairway Villas started being used to house students in the WDW College Program. As far as I know, they continue to be used for this purpose.
Other parts of the DI (bungalows and townhouses) were torn down to make room for the Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa that has been under construction since sometime in 2002. SSR will open mid-May of this year. The closing of the DI took place in early 2002. I think that the fall off in the number of visitors to WDW after 9/11/2001 accelerated the closing of the Institute, although it was already clear that it was not working out in the educational/recreational programs being hosted there in the months prior to closing. We had attended a week-long program at the DI in spring, 2001.
Originally posted by MrsJ Henry Thanks for all the info. I'm assuming the treehouses were also torn down for new developement.... I used to always want to stay in them.
No, I think the treehouses might also be part of the College Program housing. As I remember, there is a separate access road to get to the treehouses, so this area may never become part of the SSR.
When we stayed at POFQ, we often took the boat up to the DD are- and always saw the treehouses. Our kids always said they would love to stay in them but we never did get there. Have not been back to that area in a number of years and had not thought about them until i saw your post. Thanks for some nice memories.
