Do you read " Go Ask Alice " when you were younger?

I remember them well. I'm amazed that anyone thought that GOA was a real memoir; I've been working in libraries since 1970, and I've never seen it shelved anywhere other than YA fiction. Same deal with "Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic" (the TV movie version starred Linda Blair - again.)

The most censored of these titles is *still* Judy Blume's Forever. Go figure, because it's pretty mild by today's standards.

I remember taking a class field trip to a theatre to see the film version of "My Side of the Mountain."

BTW, YA novels are still largely cautionary tales, but they've become just a tad less preachy now. My favorites YA authors are Chris Crutcher and the late Robert Cormier.

:rotfl2: Every time I think of Jeremiah Johnson, it reminds me of my dad. He hated watching movies in the theatre and that is the only movie he actually took us to the theatre to see when I was a kid.

Yeah, all the men saw that one. That and Walking Tall. :lmao:

And one more:

The Kentucky Fried Movie

:p

Gah. Is it 5pm yet? Geez. :rolleyes1

I read it, but we had to have a note from our parents giving us permission to take it out of the school library!

Scared? No.

But, I still remember that I read it coming home from the Jersey Shore. I remember that we stopped at Hot Dog Johnny's and I was mad that I had to put it down to go out and eat.

So, yes, it affected me, but it didn't scare me, per say.

Having eaten at Hot Dog Johnny's I don't blame you for being mad.

I read the book too but it didn't scare me. And I never felt the urge to do drugs, so maybe I learned something from it.

I don't know if Bach wrote anything besides JLS....I'm pretty sure it took me the whole of the 70s to get through the one. :scared1:

He's got several more recent books with ferrets as the main character as well. Somehow his writing style doesn't translate as well today as it did in the 1970's. I loved JLS, but have had trouble getting through the newer books.

:rotfl2: I think Mom & Dad went to see this one on their own. I know I never saw it until I was an adult. I do remember my younger sister playing that freakin' song over and over again when we were kids. That and Run, Joey, Run.

I remember reading Go Ask Alice and several other books that were similiar to that, by the same author I'm sure......

It never stopped me from doing drugs or anything, I just thought it was interesting to read. I loved all that type of stuff like alot of posters on this thread, what is wrong with teenaged girls and tragic stories????

I remember when the modern version of Romeo & Juliet came out I loved it, and Titanic too :snooty: (mmmm...maybe that had to do with the huge crush I had on Leonardo Dicaprio at the time:blush: )

I'm actually shocked because you guys said it was fiction. I had no idea :rolleyes1

I well remember "Born Innocent". I both read the book and saw the movie a few times. That one really affected me. I also read "The Girls of Huntington House" about a teen home for unwed mothers and what was going on in their lives. I found that totally fascinating as a teen. Another one for me was "Ode to Billy Joe". Robbie Benson & Glynnis O'Connor. Wow, memories!

Loved Ode to Billy Joe,I haven't seen it in years. Thanks for bringing back some memories:thumbsup2

This is the first I've heard of the diary being a fake. I thought it was on display somewhere (her hometown, I thought) ...

I also kinda wondered if I could get a liquor store to deliver a box of booze (a la' Sarah) while claiming my mom was in the shower when I was a teenager.

Was Born Innocent the one where Linda Blair gets kidnapped and falls in love with her kidanpper (Martin Sheen?) who gets shot in the end?

I remember all of the books and songs

I loved the song...."Billy Don't Be a Hero"

oh, to be a teen again.

julia

BTW, my daughter is a couple of weeks shy of 13 and loves all those "drama" books

I saw Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods perform at WDW in 1974. I was so excited

'Go Ask Alice' was REQ Reading in my Freshman year of HS! :thumbsup2 One of the few books I actually liked that was REQ Reading. 'Catcher in the Rye', was the other.

I remember their was a huge debate as to wheter it was True or Not in English class. I thought it was fake, based on if Alice was so stoned, how could she write so clearly!:confused3
