Do you own more than one DVC interest?

It's me again.... The Newbie...

I have been reading how some people own multiple DVC interests. For example, one 250 point and a second 150 point OKW interest. How would these work together when booking a vacation that requires 400 points? Will Disney Reservations automatically "link" the two ownerships together into a single 400 point interest, or do you have to transfer points between the two interests as needed...

I ask this because I'm just not sure how many points I need... My problem is that I would get maximum use out of the DVC if I traveled during high season - typically Spring Break. I refuse to take my kids out of school (once they get to school age) for a vacation and have no desire to travel to Florida during the summer (too hot for me!). So, that leaves me shopping for interests in the 400+ point range.

Luckly, right now my kids are not in school, so a week at WDW in February suits us fine! As a matter of fact, I'd prefer it! However, in 5 years, as I mentioned earlier, February won't be an option for us. I'm wondering if I could buy a 250-280 point interest now, and purchase a second 150-200 point interest 4-5 years from now when I'll really need it.

If I purchase a second package, I will be sure to purchase it in the same home resort as the first. Also, if anybody has a link they can post detailing what is involved in purchasing additional points from Disney, I'd be greatful.

Just looking for some more advice.... Thanks to EVERYBODY for answering my questions fom previous posts.... All of you have been great!

We own at 3 DVC resorts and it's not a problem for us. We wanted the 3 separate resorts for a variety of reasons. Mostly because it makes each trip different. DVC links multiple contracts as long as they are from the same use year. There is no need to do any transfering of points. If you buy from DVC and then buy a resale with a different use year, it gets more complicated.

One important thing that a lot of people don't reasize is that owning at multiple resorts does not get you a priority for the 11 month booking window. If you own 250 points resort at resort "A" and 250 points at resort "B", you only get the 11 month priority for the 250 points at resort "A" and resort "B". Not 500 at either or both.

Buying additional points from Disney is easier than the first time you buy. If they approve you the first time, as long as you are on time with payments and dues, they approve you automatically. You can purchase anywhere from 25 points on up.

There is talk of SSR being on sale for the next 5 years because it is so big. You may be able to buy there now and again in 4 or 5 years for an add on.

Good luck,

Another advantage to owning multiple contracts instead of one larger one it the ability to sell off part of your ownership if you no longer need it. Say you buy 250pts now, and 200 pts in 5 yrs. Then, 15 yrs from now, you decide (for whatever reason) that you do not need all of those points. You could choose to resell one of the contracts, and keep the other one. If you had one big contract, it would be an "all or nothing" deal...Disney does not allow you to break up a contract and sell part of it. This is also helpful if you wanted to leave part of your points in your will to one child, and part to another (although, you sound like you are young enough that you will outlive your DVC contract...you never know).

Just my 2c!

I own two contracts at BCV. They have the same use year so I know when to use or bank or borrow points from both or either.

If you want simplicity, you can stipulate that the points you add on in the future be both the same resort and the same Use Year as your original purchase. Then DVC will treat them as effectively one entity, refilling at the same date each year and opening up home-resort availability at 11 months as a unified package.

Even if you stipulate this, you can still shoot for the same number of contracts as you have children. That enables you to consider all your points as a single entity, but when the kids are grown you can gift or will a contract's worth of points to each child. (DVC will not allow you to split the points in a contract, either by selling off part of the contract or by having more than one child inherit it.)

We're following this plan. We've made our initial DVC purchase. We hope to go back to the well as soon as we're paid off, which should only take another year or so, and buy another contract for the same amount and the same Use Year. As we raise the kids we'll treat the package as if it were a single contract, but when we're gone our two children can each inherit a piece.

This has been the best advice yet....

As Beca hinted, yes, I am fairly young and have a better-than-average chance of outliving my DVC interest - I'm 32 and my wife is 27. We have two small children

I think what will work the best is to purchase two 200 point contracts (one now, and a second in 5 yrs) and joint title them between myself, my wife, and one child - thus giving one DVC interest to each child. (Not sure if I can title property to a minor in Florida, but I'm sure a DVC rep can help me answer that one.)
And to maximize the gift to our children, I suppose it makes most sense to consider SSR because of the 50-year contact. At least this helps me narrow down my property choices!

One more question....

So if my use year is "April", and 5 years from now I purchase a second interest (via resale) in the same resort with an "April" use year, will I have the easiest time swapping points between the two contracts versus any other combination?

Yes. This scenario will also be the easiest for you to track. You'll have just one set of banking deadlines.

yes buying your add on at your home (first) resort does simply some things.

make sure you plan for after the kids too....

We own two BCV contracts. One was an add on. Same use year, so we have a total of X points to use. Same use year makes it easier for reservations, IMO.

I own at 2 resorts and have multiple contracts at each resort. I find it useful to have the ability to guarantee myself an 11 month window at each one independent of each other. I have 150 points in the "largest" of my contracts and 50 in the "smallest" of my contracts. I had read here on this forum the benefit of keeping them smaller so when VWL opened up I kept them smaller. All of them are the same use year too so I just have one banking window to keep track of.

If DVC is still selling SSR and 5 years, and if you choose to purchase from them...they will ONLY allow you to add on in your UY. If you purchase resale...you can do whatever you want!! But, I think having your UY's all the same sounds MUCH easier than spreading them out!! I HOPE when we are ready to add on, that I can find points in my same UY...I am WAY too scatterbrained to keep up with my points, otherwise!! Some people do it...but they are either much smarter or more talented than me!!!:jester:

Anyway...congrats on your decision to buy...please keep us posted when you do!!

As Beca said "if you choose to purchase from them...they will ONLY allow you to add on in your UY"

The only thing is it does not have to be at the same resort. If SSR is sold out before your 5 year time frame. You can always add on at a different resort. We own at HH and BCV and they are basically the same contract. The add on only has a -001 after it (I believe it is 001 anyway). When you call MS to make a resevation you just need to tell them where to take the points from HH or BCV. The nice thing about this you can bank and borrow at BCV to make reservations 11 months out and the other way around. At the 7 month window it does not matter.

Now all that being said; if you buy at SSR it is DVC II and that would require a new place to open. I do not know how it works with a DVC and DVC II contracts.

We own 200 points at VWL and 85 at BCV. We usually take 3 trips a year. We usually try to stay at VWL once a year and BCV or BWV once a year. And a third trip either at VWL or OKW or Boardwalk again. So our plan is to take advantage of the 11 month booking window a couple of times a year and then do a 7 month booking at whatever we can get for one of the trips. The 7 month booking trip is when we use up any straggler points that we need to combine. Of course, we usually go in January, May, and September. January and September have been easy to get what we want. May is tougher, though - so that 11 month window is more important for that month. I've heard December, Thanksgiving, Easter, and President's Day, and other holidays are quite heard to book if you don't do it at the 11-month window.
