Do you own a gun?

Do you own a gun?

  • No and I never have

  • No, but I have in the past (or family did growing up)

  • Yes, one

  • Yes, several

  • Yes and my family growing up did too

  • Other (there's always an other)

South Carolina also has the Castle Doctrine. I think having the criminal's estate pay for expenses related to his crime is more than reasonable - it's just another debt/money owed.

I voted "other" because it's illegal to own non-hunting guns here without a permit (and I don't hunt!) :) I have no reason to want or own a gun.

We are a law enforcement family, so my answer is yes. My dad also used to collect guns when I was growing up.

God bless Texas. ::yes:: Don't even think about breaking into our homes.

Unless of course the burglar is also heavily armed, in which case you can have a good old fashioned shoot-out.

If your theory was correct, why is Texas is 3rd highest in property crimes per capita, as well as at the higher end in violent crimes per capita in general?

?? So higher crime rate isn't a reason to protect oneself??

I assume anyone breaking into my house is armed. I'd rather be armed than a sitting duck at their mercy. It's that simple. I'd rather have a chance to shoot them than take my chances they will pass up the opportunity to kill me.

There are complicated reasons that likely go into that statistic you mentioned. I can say the stats vary GREATLY by neighborhood/town. I rarely hear of any violent crimes in the town I have lived in for nearly 20 years and I read the police reports weekly. Not to mention having worked in the prosecutor's office. We get a fair amount of shoplifting, though.

This won't be a popular response but maybe all of that has something to do with the high numbers of illegal immigrants that live in Texas or who pass through Texas to be bigger better things. Sometimes desperate people do desperate things.

And after they do those desperate things, they run back to Mexico to escape prosecution. Really, it is a running joke here that when a Mexican (legal or not) commits a crime, you can COUNT on the news report to say, "Police are seaching for the suspect, but it believed he may have headed to Mexico." Seriously, you could make a drinking game of it. Sometimes the entire room breaks out in unison, "It is believed he may have headed to Mexico," because you KNOW it is coming. If you are not in a border state, you aren't familiar with it. It's an every day occurrence here.

I've lived in 5 states and never felt the need to own a firearm. Glad I don't live where you all do! :confused3

You have to give out paychecks from behind a bullet proof glass? I remember going into a bank in Florida and wasn't sure what all the glass was in front of the tellers until my Dad told me it was bullet proof glass. I just figured that it was the only one and was in a kind of rough neighbourhood. I guess not. I am sorry I sound like it is so horrible but we don't have that here. I sit down and talk to the tellers, and no one is behind bullet proof glass. I really hope it doesn't come to that point up here. It must be hard on the people that work there to know that they need that kind of protection, and wonder if there is a relationship between the tellers and their clients. Most of the tellers in my bank know me and if I haven't been for a while will ask what happened when I do come in. Or they ask my husband. Even though we usually don't go together they know us as a married couple.

What area do you live in that has no seedy element? No neighborhood with drugs?

Actually not only my town but the towns around me. I really don't know of any place around here that has that stuff. I live in southern Ontario, Canada.
