Do you NEED a golf cart?

If we are driving, and tent camping, do we really need a golf cart, or can we drive where we need to go around the resort?
Thanks for helping me with my first Fort Wilderness trip!

First of all, beside your camp site, the only other places to park at FtW is a 15 minute parking area for about 10 cars at the Meadow Trading Post, and the main parking lot at the Outpost. Other than that, there is no place to park in the campgrounds.

As to whether or not you need a golf cart is entirely up to you. If you are tent camping, and reserved at water/electric only site, you will be in either the 1500 loop - which is very close to the Meadow recreation area, or you will be in the 2000 loop - which is close to nothing.

If your primary intent is to storm the theme parks every day/all day, then you will probably consider the $50+ a day for the cost of a cart a waste of $$. The busses & boats are adequate enough to get you where you want to go. If you will spend a lot of time in the campground and not the parks, you might want to rent a cart.

At the very least, bring your bicycles with you, because FtW is the BEST place to go bike riding. You may also ride your bike on the path that connects FtW to WL - but you can't take a cart on same path.

There is a "Sticky" at the top of this forum that shows a map of the campground.

NO! Many people rent then @ $50 a day just to drive them to the Outpost or Marina. What a waste. If you love driving one around the Fort checking out all the RVs and campsite decorations, then it would be worth while.

The bus might take you 10-20 minutes to get to the boats or park buses, but you could do it in 5-15 with a cart......@ $50!!

If you don't have a disability, I don't think you need a golf cart. They are fun, but expensive. Just depends if you have the money.

If you are short on $$, I'd say skip it.

We have never gotten one (we go yearly - 2 weeks each stay) and don't feel that we are deprived in the least.

The main question you have to ask yourself is "Do I want to spend the money on a golf cart?". If you can answer yes to that, then by all means go for it. If you have any reservations though, you probably don't need to get one.

They are not necessary, but oh man are they so much fun. Also, it's pretty much the only way to go campsite hopping and check out all the sites (although you could also do it with a bike, walking would take a very long time).

If you don't mind spending the money, I say go for it. But it's not a necessity by any means.

We personally wouldn't think of not getting one, not because we are rich or anything (far from it), but just because it's part of visiting the Fort for us, and we enjoy the convenience. Even with the cart we still walk/bike some places, so it's not like you can't enjoy that either :)

We walk to the cart dose that count.:confused3

We still take our bikes to FW even thou we bring our own golf cart. To me to enjoy FW you need one or the other.

We were in the 1500 loop which is quite close to pool, etc.--but quite a distance from the marina. Money was tight for us as it is for most people, but I would definately recommend renting a cart. It was great to get back to the park and hop into "cart" and zip back to our camper. No waiting for buses, etc. Plus--IT IS SOOOOO MUCH FUN! I considered it one our amusements--a part of our vacation experience. I will never camp there without one!

We've never rented a golf cart in all the times we've been to FW. We usually take our bikes, and we tend to spend a lot of time in the parks, too, so while the golf carts look like fun, I think it'd be a waste for us. I personally find the bus transportation within the campground to be very good, too. We usually stay in the 1400 loop, which is near the Meadows Pool and a quick bus ride, bike ride or even walk to the settlement.

We rented a golf cart on our first trip and then my husband thought we needed to buy one so we now have one of our own.

We really enjoy riding around on the golf cart. To us that is part of the experience at the Fort. "looping"

There is a fine line sometimes between what you NEED and what you WANT. :rotfl:

You will only NEED one if you plan on not walking, not using the bus, not using bikes, and you want to go further than your loop.

We always rent one now even though we take our bikes. As the others said, they are fun and it's now part of our experience at the fort. Plus, it makes those 2:00 a.m. nature calls easier than doing a nice little dance 432 feet down the loop :rotfl:

truer words were never said. If God wanted us to walk, he wouldn't have invented Golf Carts.

I had one for the first time during part of my December 07 trip - 4 out of the 7 days I was there. Used it for convenience, some looping - looking for other DISer's (we need more of the signs out there) and checking out the decorations.

Did I need it - No! Believe me I could have used the exercise.

Did I want one - Definately!!! - Like the rest of my "toys".

Will I get one again in October - Probably - at least part for part of the trip.

Yes! They are good fun for everybody.

That's about the same age I was when I slammed my parents cart into a tree at Fort Wilderness (circa late 1970's). That's probably the same face I was making right beforehand too...lol.

Great picture by the way!

I was there about that time Chris. I think I saw you do that. Was it in the 2000 loop? LMAO

Check that look out. He's saying yeah, that stroller on the floorboard is fixin to be rollin off sideways baby.

This last trip was the first time the DH and I took a golf cart- DH got the itch for one on the trip before so we bought a used one and fixed it up... we absolutely LOVED it!
