Do You Like Unique Baby Names?

My DW and I love unique names!

Our first girl is Alexandria Brooke...not too different, but finding other "Alexandria's" isn't too common.

Our second little girl was originally going to be named September Blue because that is my wife's favorite color and she was born in September...her name ended up being Brynna Rose...very Celtic and still pretty original.

OUr last little girl is named Margaret Lee Hope...or Maggie Lee for short!

To an extent. I like names you don't hear every day. But please Apple for a kid? C'mon that's a little too unique. I don't consider odd spellings unique either because they still sound like the thousands of other Taylors/Taylores or Kaylas/Kaelahs running around.

I have a Jaycie and a Jenna. Jaycie is a combination of the first initials of my first and maiden name (spelled like '96 olympian Jaycie Phelps). We really don't have many Jenna's around here, so that was okay too. We had originally considered Hannah, but that name is coming back here.

So I hope I dont get flamed, but you asked for opinions so here is mine:

Can't stand unique names. Especially those with madeup spellings. Now if its something not too weird (like Brooklyn or Harley) that's okay. But a child at daycare is named Melati and that is just too strange.

When we had our son we had several rules that we agreed to follow when picking out his name:

Had to be able to tell whether the child is a girl or boy

Had to be a no-brainer on the spelling - I am Leigh and it can be spelled so many ways, I get tired of spelling it out for people

And whatever his first name is must be the name we call him. DH goes by his middle name and its such a pain with legal forms and doctors, etc.

I once heard that when you are picking a name, put the title of Dr. in front of it. Because when the child grows up you dont want to predispose their occupation because of their name. For example the name Destiny sounds more like a stripper than a Dr. and names that are hard to pronounce are the worst. At my last job I had to help set up interviews. If I couldnt pronounce the name, I put them on the bottom of the pile. Dateline did a story - sent in people for interviews with the same exact qualifications but with either traditional names or unique hard to pronounce names. And the ones with the traditional names got hired far more often.

But you know - to each his own.

I agree with you 100%.

My son's name is Michael. It's easy, everyone knows how to spell it, sounds good if he becomes a doctor (which is possible since he wants to go to dental school) and is a classic.

I hate unique names that are spelled in a weird way. Why in the world would anyone do that to their child.

I have my flame suit on. I don't care. I don't get it.

I hate names that are spelled 'uniquely' instead of the traditional spelling. One of my children fusses at me and calls me a "Nameist."

"I hate names that are spelled 'uniquely' instead of the traditional spelling."

Me too!!

While both my name and my DS's name are not spelled in the normal way, they are correct spellings, just not the not the most popular. My DS will never find any pencils with Brenden on them unless we get them made but he likes his name. Names that are traditional in one area of the country may seem unique or odd in other areas. So unique is very subjective.

Brenden seems normal to me! Now, if it were spelled Brye'Nndynn, then that would kind of get me! :teeth:

ITA! Some of the names that seem odd in one part of the country (or world, even!) are normal somewhere else. In college I had a friend named Aisha, and her name was unusual for where our university was located. But when I got a chance to visit her where she grew up, I met 3 more Aisha's.

My name is Bethany, and it was very unique where I was growing up - I always had to spell it for people, and everyone automatically shortened it to "Beth" whether I liked it or not. In college I started meeting young parents who told me their preschool or younger -aged daughter was named Bethany (I met 4 young Bethanys in one year). Now it's still unusual, but more people have heard of it. When I introduce myself, my name is still often mistaken for Stephanie or Brittany, but that's easy to correct now. I love my name, and I'm very proud of it. I think it's beautiful! :)

My guys have traditional names but I don't mind less traditional names. DS1 had a little girl named Zillah (Z-eye-lah) in his class and I think that is a really pretty, unique name. (I know it is biblical)

No, I don't like them. Made up names, purposely mis-spelled names, cities or inanimate objects used as names - I think they are all silly and pretentious.

Like someone else said, unique, but not too unique. We have a very common last name, the phone book is full of people with the same exact name as me or my DH. I wanted to give my son a name that would be a little different so he wasn't as likely to run into someone with the exact same name as him around every corner. I would not want to name him something so "unique" though that other kids would make fun of him.

(And Aiden may be very popular in some areas, but here we usually hear "That's a pretty name, I've never heard it before." He has not had another Aiden/Aidan in his class yet. ;) ).

As long as they aren't some sort of mispelled distorted ebonics yes.

Anyone notice the abundance of Neveah's lately?

Only thing that really bugs me is punctuation or random capital letters. If it would make a good online password, it generally isn't a good name.

Unyque' names with kriateve spellings make the mommeigh and daddeigh who "made up" the name look very uneducated.

My neighbors kids have great names.. everyone of them I love.

Kylie, (girl), Livvy ( Girl)

Avery (boy) and Nevin ( boy)

Everyone of her names I would use myself. I absolutely love the name Nevin. I had never heard it before. I like names you can't really shorten to a nickname. Unfortunatly we have another neighbor who calls Nevin, Vinny...

Named my son Regan, didn't want a nickname. and yet...... everyone calls him Reegie.
