We're having a $10 gift exchange during our next girl's night so I decided to get a gift card to a book chain. Personally I like picking my own lotion and candles, and some girls have nut allergies so chocolate would be risky (we're picking names out of a hat that night so I don't know who the gift is for). I figure this way they could use it towards a book, cd, magazine dvd, whatever.

Anyways, I mentioned this to one of my friends and she was not impressed with my gift. I love getting gift cards but apparently a lot of people think they're impersonal. So what do you all think? I still have one more day to buy another present if I need to.

I love getting gift cards!!!! I can understand how some people find them impersonal, but I think they are great! I love picking out my own stuff, and so to me, it's thoughtful to let my recipient do the same. So, I love giving them too. :D

Not me. I would hate them, but I understand why some people like them, or why people choose to give them.

I love them. My in-laws just gave us stateroom credits for Christmas (we'll be on a cruise for the holiday hence the early exchange). This way we can buy what we want.

What about buying or making a cute bookmark that you can give with the card. It's more personal than just the gift card and the person would have something to remember you by long after they spent the card.

I like them! Sometimes it can be frustrating if you end up spending too much just so you don't "waste" the money on the card (if the certificate is worth $10 at an expensive clothing store...and you have enough socks ;)) but generally I think they're a great gift if you don't have the means of personalizing it to the recipient's tastes.

I love gift cards too! But then, I love to shop- so it's like 2 gifts in one. lol :D

Well, my initial reaction was, "I love them!!" But in the scenario you are talking about, then I wouldn't get one for someone. Because it is a name drawing sort of a thing, and you are just each getting the one gift, I would do something else. Maybe a book light and a mini book with a gc for the local coffee shop tucked inside. (That way the gc amount could be less.)

I like them too! Mostly I have a hard time coming up with items to even put on my Christmas list. All I really want this Christmas is DISNEY DOLLARS for my January trip. Second choice, movie money. Third choice, bookstore money. Fourth choice. the LOR:ROTK extended version DVD. That's it.

Princess Pooh, how about a Blockbuster coupon, bag of microwave popcorn and a some candy?

I love them. I am assured to get something with that money that I will like and use!!!

I LOVE them. I never complain when I receive them and a gift card to a book chain would be awesome.

I love them! That is all I ask for anymore. It's so much nicer, I can go pick out what we really need. Actually this year I asked for GC to Target, Grocery stores, Macys, and a few other stores. We are moving this weekend so it would be so much easier for us to get gift cards, then we can buy what we will need for the new place!

That's a great idea! I have a pink ribbon bookmark that I got during breast cancer awareness month. I think that would be appreciated.

Ibouncetoo I was going to do the blockbuster package but I found out not everyone is a member. I would love to get that as a gift!!!! Hmmmm, I wonder if dbf is reading this ;). Thanks to everyone for your advice and opinions.

I love getting them and would rather get that then something I really don't want. I hate to sound ungrateful about getting a gift, but I just would rather buy what I want then something that is going to sit in my closet for years.

Just my opinion

I don't like them b/c as I get older, I really don't like to shop. To me, I'm just getting more work. In the situation you described, I would have gone out and gotten a gift and then I would feel like I also had to go out and get my own gift. In that situation esp, I would rather get an actual gift. Although there is an exception - I would love to get a gc to a scrapbook store - that kind of shopping is fun to me.

That's just me though - I don't think it's inherently wrong to give a gift card and about half the people here, if not more, said they'd love it. It that's what you want to do, I don't see anything wrong with it. It just wouldn't thrill me personally.

Love them, especially since the risk of buying something I already have is cut to nil
