Muffin, how rude of him! I totally agree that he should have declined.

She didn't have a hip replacement, that is for sure. She could not stay with her cart to save her life when the lady ahead of her was checking out, something that my 12yo was asking about when we were out of the store. She KEPT wandering off--strange...

Of course I don't know if she was in a hurry, which is why I'm not judging her, just asking in general. I have 4 kids, with Jake being my youngest and my oldest being an adult--so I pretty much know the nature of the job--mommy. ;) It's a strip shopping center, though, and there aren't restrooms like there would be in a mall or a lot of shopping areas. And we're not talking a regular restroom trip, but what appeared to be an urgent sit-down trip. We've had some intestinal issues, but as it turned out he made it until we got home, which is good since I'm not sure where we would have found a restroom and we live close.

But anyway, she didn't appear to be in a hurry and started to chat with the clerk about helium for her balloons, wasn't unloading her purchases, etc, and he was seeming a little impatient with her considering the long line.

No kids to get off the bus today since there wasn't school here. Regardless, I'm asking people in general, when they are able, if they let people go ahead of them in line.

In her case, she might not have been paying attention. Seemed to have been, but who knows?

Did you feel entitled to go ahead of this person because she was friendly with the clerk and your son had to go poo? If I don't have time to wait in line, I leave. And the Radio Shack in my strip mall by the Dollar store will always let a child use the potty, so will the health food store. The drug store actually has a public restroom. As a mom, I can tell you my kids have had the same emergencies while out shopping, and all I feel entitled to is my right to stay and risk an accident or come back later.

She wasn't friendly with the clerk. The person ahead of HER was the one checking out when we got there. That was what was taking awhile. This lady would have taken awhile and before she started was when I asked the clerk if there was a restroom. He was the one who saw my money and offered to take it.

I would never have let the clerk do that. Just like at Disney, even if I'm going to be late for my dinner reservation, I'm not entitled to go ahead of people in line for Peter Pan-- unless I have a Fast Pass. My inconvenience does not "entitle" me.

And momof2inPA, we were stopping in to buy a gift bag for a party that my son was going to as soon as we were getting home, so we didn't have the luxury of going home and coming back. Of course at that moment in time I didn't know if he was feeling ok since we've been having some viruses circulating our family and for all I knew at the time he was coming down with the stomach virus that his brother had a few days prior. But thankfully he didn't, but with the winter that we've had nothing would have surprised me. If I had of had my oldest son with me I could have left him to pay and I could have walked the shopping center with my 6yo looking for a restroom, but I wouldn't do that with my 12yo.

But still, I related that story because that was what inspired the thread...I was asking when a person is able to let someone go ahead of them, so they?

Yes. I try to be aware of who's aorund me and how much stuff they have in comparison to how much I have.

:confused3 There were no other employees around and I wanted to find out if there was a restroom. So I shouldn't have asked him if there was a restroom? He's the one that saw my $ and offered to take the $ so I could leave. It didn't slow the lady down at all .

All the time. I also let people merge in front of me in traffic (apparently taboo around here), step to the side so other people can pass first, give other drivers and pedestrians the right of way, and remember to say please, thank you and excuse me. Just the way my momma raised me. It takes so little time and effort to be unselfish and the pay off is huge. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it more often.

I will if I can, but please don't get mad at me if I can't. I had a woman ask to go in front of me once in the grocery store. I was on a deadline to pick up my kids from CCD, so I did not think I could spare even the 5 minutes it would have taken to have her go in front. When I politely said "no, i have a urgent matter to take care of" she berated me and called me names. Yes, I was cutting it close to pick up my kids, but I waited in the line just like everyone else. So if I am in a hurry, aren't I entitled to stay in my spot????

I totally agree! There have been times that I have been late picking a child up, etc and unable to let someone go in front of me. I can't imagine having someone ask, explaining that, and having someone get mad! Geez!

Guess I'm still gullible enough to believe what goes around comes around :rotfl: Either that or my self esteem is so low that I think everyone else deserves to go before I do :rotfl2:
