Do you lay out in the sun?

I pretty much wear sunscreen if I am going to be outside in the sun for a fairly long time, however, Drs are reporting that there is an extreme deficiency of Vitamin D these days. My drs are now advising that everyone get 15 minutes of sun without sunscreen. So while we don't want skin cancer we also don't want many of the other diseases that vitamin D wards off.

I've always found laying around in the sun to be the most excruciatingly boring activity ever. Even when I was a teen and everyone was soaking up the rays using a combo of baby oil and iodine, I couldn't bear it for more than about 10 minutes. I love to read but have a hard time doing it with the glare. It's too hot to sleep. So I could lie there and think about how hot it is or go sit in the shade. :lmao: I choose shade.

Back in my teens, my favortie combo was 1/3 hawaiian tropic (for the scent), 1/3 baby oil, and 1/3 crisco oil. I had my own quart canning jar that I would mix it in and a paint brush to slather it on with.

My mom always said HT was to expensive, so I could only buy 1 bottle of it each summer, so I had to come up with something to make it last. Even after I emptied the bottle, I would hang onto it, just to uncap it and inhail the scent.

To me, there is a big difference between lying out in the sun and not getting any sun at all. I do have Vitamin D deficiency but my doctor told me that a large number of people in Michigan do simply because the winters are so dark and long. On her recommendation, I no longer wear sun screen when I putter around in the garden and walk outside and run errands--I just don't lie out in the sun trying to get a tan.

I lay in and around my pool, in full sun, reading and relaxing every chance I get. However, I only do so while completely coated in sunscreen, wearing a hat. I don't burn or tan anymore. Just a slight tan from running just regular exposure - not laying out.

So not sure what the OP means. I do lay out, but protected.

Only time I lay out in the sun is when I'm at a water park and even then it's only for max 15 mins before I'm itching for another slide or pool. Coming from the UK, sun is something of a novelty for me, but I make sure I use a high factor sunscreen when in the World.

Yes there is a huge difference, that is why I said that I do wear it when I am in the sun for a longer period.

You mentioned you live in Michigan, well we live in Florida and my Drs who are in Florida said it is happening here even with all of our sun. People are putting on so much sunscreen even if they just walk out the door that it is adversely affecting us in regards to vitamin D. so it isn't just you folks up north with the long winters that are seeing this happen.

I don't layour but we do swim but we are always careful to put on sunscreen.

I never lie out anymore. I'm 52 and go to the dermatologist yearly, and always need to have something frozen off. I grew up on Cape Cod and we didn't use sunscreen (those were the baby oil days). I've had some good burns. I also think constant tanning is incredibly aging. I love to be outside to walk, garden, etc. My mom and sister both had squamous cell skin cancer, so I really need to be careful.
