I have some scarab jewelry, and I'm not close to the 50 mark yet! Although my mother & grandmother instilled a very healthy respect/interest in me at an early age.

Having said that, last week after mowing the lawn I went to my back door to find a huge beetle, larger than any scarab I have, crawling on the side of the house. That is it was, until I squished it. Although I do have to confess to thinking that it would make a very unique pendant or pin, but then it grossed me out too much.

I used to have a scarab bracelet when I was a kid...Long, long ago...

My grandmother has one. I always thought it was the coolest thing. She hasn't worn it much lately.

I couldn't believe none of them had seen the movie "The Mummy" with Brendan Frazier. They played a part in that movie.

They did?!?! I didn't see anything but Brendan Frazier!

Just kidding! Those scarabs gave me the creeps in that movie! I freaked out the first time I saw a Japenese beatle!

Yes. I've never seen Amazing Race. Is it a history show?

With the help of Alladin the movie and the sega video game I knew what it was in a heartbeat!

Yup, but then again I've always been fascinated with archaeology. For a while, I wanted to be one. Now I'm happy with being an "armchair archaeologist" who reads fiction books on it and watches the shows on the Discovery/Travel/History/Science channel. ;)

I, too, couldn't believe that *none* of the teams knew what one was! I can see some people not knowing, but how did not one person at that point in the race know what a scarab was??

It is a reality show in which 11 teams of 2 compete in a race around the world. Heres a link to CBS' website for it: The Amazing Race

I knew what a scarab was before this episode and I was surpised that the teams didn't.

Why is everyone so surprised that none of the teams knew what a scarab was? I didn't. I've seen The Mummy and Aladdin and that little bit of info didn't stick with me at all. And I would never choose to study archeology or anything like that.

I knew what a scarab was and was also suprised that not one of the teams knew what it was. This is one of my favorite shows! EsmeraldaX, thanks for the pictures and the quick history lesson, appreciate it!:bounce:

I think the poll kind of says it all. that at this point 80% of the people polled knew what a scarab was from some source or other, either from studies or reading or movies. what was surprising wasn't that some didn't know what it was in the AR, but because 0% of them did. I was personally surprised by that. even if you reversed the numbers here where 80% didn't know and 20% did, I would still expect at least one person on one team to know what a scarab was.

I knew it from the Universal board on the Dis. Most Mummy ride threads mention the scarabs.

That's what I thought. I was wondering if there was an emphasis on education as well. That would be kinda neat....:D

Yes, I do know what a scarab is. Never heard of Amazing Race though.

The only Scarab I am familiar with is a make of boat....a nice fast boat!!

I also knew from a jewelry point of view! So I might have been digging for something much smaller than THOSE scarabs!

My son works at the Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios so I know about scarabs. I even have a few fake scarabs.

I've seen The Mummy and I still didn't know what one was. I guess I was too distracted by Brendan. ;)
I do know what TAR is. I love that show. :teeth:
