Do you know someone who has battled brain cancer and survived?

What were/are the odds of survival? How long has it been since diagnosis?

Reason I'm asking is because my Dad is currently battling brain cancer. His doctor gave him a 25% survival. He's only 61 years old. I'm so scared. I don't want to lose my Dad!

Prayers would be very much appreciated!

There is a young woman at my church who is a single mom with two children under the age of five. She was diagnosed with brain cancer just after she had her second child. I am not sure of the exact type of tumor she had, but I do know it was very serious and the stats the doctors gave her were just awful. She had made arrangements for family members to take care of her boys and the situation was not hopeful at all.

Three years later, she is still with us. I do not believe the cancer has been cured but it has stopped progressing. Of course, none of us know what the future will hold but she is doing very well at the moment- she is back at work, back at church and singing every Sunday.

There is always hope.

I will absolutely say a prayer for your father and your family. My dad is 60 and I can't imagine losing him. Lots of prayers and good thoughts coming your way.

Sorry to hear about your dad. My aunt had lung cancer but also had a tumor in her brain. They only gave her 6 months but she lived for 3 years. She was also 61 when diagnosed. Try to keep a positive attitude i think that really helped my aunt and try to enjoy your time together. When my aunt was up to it we would bring her shopping/out to eat and even to NYC and the Big E. She was at the casino a week before she passed away

I forgot to sat i will say a prayer for your dad

I'm sorry about your Dad. Prayers for you and your family.

This is kind of a friend of a friend story. . but I used to teach with a gal who's sister's friend had brain cancer. She was young, late twenties, with two small children. Her prognosis wasn't good. It sounds like they basically told her to go home and get her things in order. BUT she went totally alternative. It sounds like it was a full time job. I don't know all of what she was doing, but I do know that she was juicing a lot. Well, after a year she was in remission, and after 3 years she was still doing well. I lost track of her story at that time, so I don't know what ever happened. I'm not saying that that is for everybody, but it was her "don't take no for an answer" type of attitude that I think served her well. Good luck and don't take what they tell you without a fight.

Yes, depending on the type brain cancer, some people live a long time. My DH's best friend from childhood is a perfect example. He had surgery as a young child for his brain tumor that was found to be malignant. He's now a grandfather. :goodvibes That's not typical but shows it sometimes can happen. Hope your Dad lives to be an old, old man. :thumbsup2

It depends on the type, i know GB grade 4 survival is less than 7 yrs.Prayers for your Dad:grouphug:

The time of diagnosis for a loved one is the most terrifying time. My deepest sympathies to you.

My sister is 2.5 years into her battle, and still going strong! She has a very rare type that is most closely related to GBM grade 4, and her tumor has shrunk some and doesn't seem to be gaining any ground.

One word of caution, beware of the witch doctors out there. There will be some who claim that good organic food and decaffeinated coffee cured their loved one of brain tumors/brain cancer. Before believing any of that, and applying that to your father, please get more specific details from the advice giver. Things like type of tumor/cancer, location, grade, etc. Even then I'd always trust Doctors before trusting the DIS Doctors. MANY things out there interfere with various tumor medications. I know that there are many foods/things that my sister has to avoid because they could negatively impact her chemo and her medications.

Again, I am so sorry for your father's diagnosis.

My sister-in-law's co-worker ha had brain cancer for about 5 or 6 years....she has had to have a couple of surgeries and so forth, but overall has done OK.

YES! I do...have a friend diagnosed with a Glioblastoma almost 6 years ago now. Had surgery to remove all they could and a year almost of conventional treatments. Since then he has been seeing a Holistic Dr and has Vit C infusions, mistletoe injections etc etc....his tumour is the same size as the day of the surgery! He has MRI's every 4 months and thank god he continues the fight! He was given 12-15 months at time of diagnosis..prayers for your Dad that he also does well:hug:

My friends son has a brain tumor- They discovered it when he was 18 months old- couldn't remove entire tumor because of location. He gets treatment on and off. She was given a less than 25% chance of survival at the time of the initial diagnosis. He is now 14 years old!

Sending good thoughts your way. Hope your Dad is ok.

Best wishes for your father

DBIL was diagnoised at 23.....he is now 56.
The treatments were hard on him and he is not doing well now, but had a wonderful life after diagnoised.

I worked with a guy who was diagnosed and given a very low chance of survival - it was less than 10%. He was in his late 30's at the time. He did an experimental treatment, and 14 years later he is doing great and has been told that his chance of it returning is no greater than that of the general population. Never give up hope.

My brother-in-law (in his 30s) was diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor just over five years ago. He has gone through a lot of treatments and tests. The one medication that seemed to work well and had it shrunk almost to nothing was something called Ruta that he got from overseas, but he stopped taking it and the tumor has been growing again. They had originally given him two years and he's over five now with fairly good prospects for the future.

Prayers for your father.

People beat the odds all the time. Nobody, not even the doctors, knows who that person will be.

Spend as much time as you can with your dad and make all the memories you can.

I so agree with you, noone knows, if so i would have my Precious Daughter here with me, just do normal things with them, and love and continue your everyday life.
I do want to make one statement, if we could do over again, there would be no surgeries, i truly believe after 3 surgeries, that if my daughter would have had none she would still be here'Prayers with you.

 God bless you both...

I thankfully know of one person. I subbed for her at her station a few years back. 33, married with a 5yo son, in the hospital with brain cancer.

3 years later she's up and running and cancer free. She is my hero!

Prayers for your Dad...:cloud9:
