I've been reading most of the day and in this particular storyline, one family - who lives in a beautiful mansion handed down through generations - still "dresses" for dinner every night..

By that I mean suit and tie for the DH (and sons) - elegant dresses and jewelry for the DM and daughters - with dinner being served at 8-ish.. Every day - not just Sundays or holidays..

Do you know - or have you ever known - anyone that does this?

I can think of "Sunday" people - as well as holidays - but that's about it..

Anyone?

Just one of those curious questions that popped into my head..:goodvibes

I don't know anyone that dresses for dinner each night. I think it's great if families just have dinner together at the table regularly with the tv off.

Agreed..:thumbsup2

Can you imagine having to get all gussied up for dinner like that every single night? Last time I was even in a dress was at my DD's wedding - 15 years ago!! :rotfl::rotfl:

When my grandfather was alive nd we'd visit for holidays and whatnot....if we were eating a casual meal at his house, then no, no dress required. However, if it was a holiday meal at his house, then dressing up was required (Thanksgiving/Christmas dinner).

But, but, BUT.....if he took you out to eat somewhere, and Grandpa ate out seldom, but when he did he went to nice places, then you better dress up. Didn't have to be formal dress, but no jeans or shorts. Perferably, a dress or skirt for women.

Grandpa kept a white dinner jecket and black dinner jacket in his front closet all the time. I have a picture of him and my grandmother (step-grandma, granpa was a spry old man and remarried when he was 75) goign out to eat and they are dressed up to the nines -- grandpa in his white dinner jacket and black pants and grandma in a nice dress.

Really?

I'm usually in jeans, but sometimes I dress up.

I don't know anyone personally...but I don't hang out closely enough with people who might be inclined to do that.

The only place I have seen this is on an episode of Wife Swap where a family did do this. I do not know if the truth about that was embellished since it was "reality".

Then there was a thread once where a family was going on a big reunion trip to Disney courtesy of the grandparents. The grandparents expected a family meal each night with everyone dressed "up". I do not recall if it simply meant nicer clothes than the parks or suit and tie. That is the closest I have come across to what you are describing.

Oddly, as a child, I wished my family did that. I have no idea why or how I associated that one should dress fancy for dinner. I did go on a cruise in 3rd grade and of course that is what was done on the cruise. I guess I wanted to keep that up as it really improved my morale of our family status. (not that that was a rational thought...but at the time, I was ashamed at how often I went places with koolaid mustaches, stringy hair, and sloppy clothes---mom worked weekends for the military and my step father didn't really care how we looked or how groomed or clean we were. )

Really.. I've always hated dresses - even when I was a kid.. My mom would get me all dressed up for Easter and I would run upstairs and put a pair of pants on underneath my outfit..:rotfl: Drove her nuts..

I was a tomboy - still am at 60 years old.. I see lots of very, very pretty dresses - love to look at them - as long as they're on someone else..
