Do you keep your Disney life secret?

I have it both ways...my co-workers are disney fans also and jealous of each and every time I get to take a trip.
On the other hand, my extended family (livng in Tx.) makes fun of me. Fortunately, I don't live close enough to my extended family to make them aware of every vacation I take, so the ridicule is kept to a minimum.
And my co-workers/friends are extremely supportive so I get to talk about it as much as I want.
What's really neat is, I work in a dentist office and when the computer screen in my room goes idle, it turns to my disney slide show! You wouldn't believe how entertaining it is for patients and how many people ask about my trips. I've found out about several other DVCers because of it.

Ah...Ocean City, Maryland... I would be quite happy to never see that place (or any of the attendant traffic) again. I grew up down there and I'm glad to be gone.

Anyway, as to the OP's question, I have refrained from telling too many people at work. I work at a sizeable law firm in DC where most of my fellow associates and the partners find the idea of Disney to be too low-class for themselves. They prefer spending their time (and lots of money) in exotic locales. It seems that their attitude is that no one should really vacation in the United States unless they're going to Vegas to blow some cash. Ah, well. They don't need to understand the Disney obsession. As an earlier poster said, one less family to stand behind in line.

I think everybody we know, and everybody in our small village knows about our Disney DVC love. We go into the bank..."so, getting ready for another Disney trip?" DH goes to a meeting...at least one person will say "When are you going back to Disney?" When we say we are going on vacation, nobody even asks anymore where we are going.....they already know!:goodvibes

All my players on my football team know I'm a Disney nut and are far too afraid of what I might do to them if they decide they will be funny and call me Coach Mickey, like make them sing "Part of Your World" while doing 50 push-ups, great motivator, to say anything. :yay: :dance3: :yay: :cheer2: !!!

That would be too funny to see. I work with footballers at my high school so I know the mentality.

My travel agent of all people used to tease my wife about going to Disney all the time. My brothers and sisters would always think that we were crazy but now that their children are grown up and have children of their own, they come and get Uncle Tim to plan their vacations. They always wished that their parents would take them down after seeing our children going down with us all the time. Now that my nephews and neices are taking their children down to WDW, my brothers and sisters want to go their with their Grandchildren . And of course they all want to use my DVC points.

Another great thread, and I enjoy reading all of the responses. I used to think anout keeping it a secret but decided against it as this is what we enjoy. Then when we explain that we will be staying "free" at a hotel costing $700 (ie.) night for 5 nights then the ridiculing stops.

For my DW and me though we purchased into DVC to keep the family together. We are entering the empty nest stage and soon our DD and DS will be married and starting their families. We are already planning to reserve a 3-bedroom villa for the kids and grandkids so that we can share that first Disney experience with the little ones. As Disney explains it, the eyes up and jaws open experience.

We tease our DD that we reserve the right to take our grandchildren on their first Disney trip, at which she disagrees, so we have a Disney fan in our family too. We even got her into the DisBoards while she is away at college. So if she is reading this, get back to your studies young lady.

Go Disney!:dance3:

We are DVC owners since Dec 06 and haven't told any family. I would think that our neighbor whose name we gave to DVC at the tour might know, but I think they sold their contract at the exact same time we were buying.

We haven't told family or friends because we just don't think they get it. Even when we made two trips within a year and half time they said "going again so soon". And we like to go on our own and be able to do what we like, and not work around everyone else. My parents seem to think if we go on vacation together that we must spend every minute together.

We took our first DVC trip last Oct for a long weekend and didn't tell any family that we were even going on a trip. A few friends new we were going to Disney, but they don't know that we are DVC owners.

Sometimes I even just say we are going to Florida to not get the Disney again look. But they always say "Not to Disney?"

Our kids already know that the "first" granddaughter will be a Disney Princess! But we can wait at least 5 more years for that to happen.

We don't hide our Disney addiction and DVC ownership to our friends and neighbors. For me, it only applies to work and clients.

We like to travel period and that makes a lot of people jealous(the WDW part is just the icing on the cake).

Though I am surprised to find the number of friends and neighbors who are timeshare owners. 2 people up the street own Westgate weeks. Ran into a fellow DVC owner at our elementary school carnival.

this is a funny thread....never thought about keeping it secret.

we don't get teased about goint to disney but alot of people don't understand the MAGIC. I feel sorry for them:rotfl:

We always get the "AGAIN??" response whenever we say we're going to WDW. Either that or the "why don't you go somewhere else?" resposne. I think they're all just jealous!!:lmao:

2. We feel very fortunate we can afford to do Disney often. Some people may never have the opportunity to go even once so we prefer to keep the the trips under wraps.

This is why I tend not to mention my trips to WDW. I work with the United Way in a very poor neighborhood in the county that has the highest poverty rate in the US. So instead of talking about it at work, I share it here.

It's kinda hard for us to "keep a secret" - neither of us own a non-disney watch, several of my dress shirts have mickey embroidery, my office (I'm a lawyer) has a fair amount of Disney Art. The real interesting thing is when people come to our home for the first time - the only rooms without some kind of Disney stuff (from actual art to silly stuff to salt and pepper shakers) is the bathroom (oh scratch that - mickey soap), so that just leaves our son's room (actually, he doesnt' know it, but there's a hidden Mickey in his room - he's 23 by the way). I like to refer to the first impression of our home as the shcok and awwwwww:lmao: As we say, far too often - the Magic is Everywhere!

My father in law (who used to love Disney but suddenly got grumpy at about 70) complains that we are not experiencing the world - to which we reply - World Showcase!!! - we can see the whole world in an afternoon and not get disintary!

Viva WDW!! :wizard:

I think our family and friends pretty much have us figured out by now!! :lmao: Those who know we have DVC, don't seem to question our going to Disney so often anymore. I remember we were sort of apprehensive about telling my parents that we bought into DVC. Just a couple of weeks ago, they bought into a Marriott Timeshare down in California, so now I don't feel so "guilty"!! ;)

I tend to keep it a secret. Only our immediate family knows when we're going and maybe a few casual acquaintances that wouldn't say "Again?!". Once I started getting the "Again?!" comments I quit mentioning it. As you can see from my signature, we went quite a lot in a 12 month span. :rolleyes1

We always hear the comment "Disney Again" all the time. Exspecially from our family. So in 2006 christmas time we decided to invite my cousin and her family to stay with us at ssr. (husband and 2 kids) We were more then happy to invite them. They had to pay for tickets, food, plane, ect... Well when we were at the parks, my cousin who smokes had no problem lighting up were ever we were. my dh and I do not smoke and hated it. She also yelled at her kids all the time. Sort of embarressing to us. When we got home we had to hear from my little cousin that we weren't fun cause we just went to the parks and swam at the pools. We didnt want to go to the beach or travel around florida. To make a very long story short, I think people like my relitives don't respect the disney atmosphere. Were dh and I live and die disney!!:goodvibes I also think alot of it is jealously. We dont go camping. we dont have the cottage on the lake. We just love disney!!!

The envy of others is another reason we don't talk about it. One of my co-workers and friend goes to ocean city every year. The want to go to WDW, they honeymooned there, but says he can't afford it. I know for the money he is spending going to Ocean City, he could afford Disney. But the stigma is still there about "How much it costs to go to Disney". We spend less on vacations now that we are timeshare/DVC owners then ever before in our life.

I know the feeling about O.C., alot of people at my work and my DH's family go "down the ocean" LOL every summer sometimes more than once, but when I say I'm going to WDW, thay always say, "again?!?!?!?!" It's pretty expensive in O.C., I figure let them all go there, they won't be at WDW when I go.:rotfl2:

I agree about the magic, I just feel like crying (OK- I know corny)when I am walking towards the castle, and when I saw the Disney Magic ship in September, I did cry. Everybody just doesn't get it, that's why I love the Disboards!!

We have gone to Myrtle Beach for one or two weeks every year since 1989...and no one says anything about it....we have been to WDW every year since 2004.....and about everyone says 'Disney again'....we don't bring up DVC...I can hear it now...anyway this year line is what are you and your family doing for vacation this year........Two weeks in Florida at the end of June...One week at Myrtle Beach in July....and a week on the Outer Bank of North Carolina in October..........Life is good........:thumbsup2

My co-workers and family all know I'm Disney World crazy to an extent. I recently showed some of my closer friends at work the DIS boards and my signature, avatar. I knew they would make fun of me but I had to get this addiction off my chest:rotfl: For some reason they mostly made fun of "DH" and "DS" dear husband and dear son:confused3

This is why I love:love: DIS boards because there are so many nuts like me:laughing:
