Do you husk corn at the store? Why?

A lot of people do that around here too and I never understood why since I was always told that the corn breaks down faster after the husk has been removed.

Hmm.. maybe next time I'm buying potatoes I should bring my peeler with me and take care of them next to the corn shuckers :teeth: :)

No way! It's rude. No one should have to deal with that mess that would be left behind by someone else. We husk them at home, on the porch over a paper bag

Okay. But our store have a big bin specifically for the purpose of husking the corn in the store. I don't see how this can be rude :confused3 Now I would not husk it in the store and leave the mess by the corn. That would be rude.

I would never do it at the store. Also, I always thought the term was "shucking", not "husking". Anyone know the right term? Or are they both correct?

They are both right. I am a husker and shucker! In and out of the store

Maybe its just a local thing, but our stores will have large trash cans around the corn so that people just throw their own husks away.

We have a huge trash container in our stores for this too. Almost everyone husks the corn in the store. I'm checking for worms and yucky ears, plus I hate all the mess in my house from it. All those little silkey stings drive me nuts. Plus I work in the store and we know the customers like to husk them and we keep our customers happy, we don't feel it is rude at all.

We only buy husked corn if we're grilling, and we grill it in husk, so we husk it at the dinner table.

I've never heard of such a thing! I'm a big time grocery shopper and cook fresh veggies daily. Nope, have never seen this done.

Me either.

I also only grill the corn and do it in the husk. So we are huskers at home.

I have never seen anyone doing this in the store either.

I wait until I'm home to clean my ears. I take them outside and do it.

Sometimes I husk the corn in the store next to the containers all my local stores have there just for the corn husks.
Sometimes I do wait and husk the corn at home.
No big deal to me how or where other people do it :rotfl2:

I never saw this except in Northern California. I thought maybe it was because they are really, really picky about garbage pickup where I lived in CA - you are limited to one small container (unless you pay a big surcharge). I always felt like I was weird because I DIDN't husk it in the store.

Nope. I do peel it back to check the corn.

I do the same... just to make sure there's no worm damage.

Once or twice I have husked at the store... but only when I knew I was going straight home to cook it. The only real saving is the cleanup at home.

I've never seen a big garbage can next to the corn to shuck the corn into until reading about it on the DIS within the last year. I occasionally see someone shucking their corn, but most people don't do it at the store. I don't--I'm usually in a hurry to get out of the store and the last thing I want to do is to stand the trash can shucking corn. Also, I usually turn my kids loose doing that job at home (on the deck), so I wouldn't want to take away their fun. :teeth:

I'm surprised how many of you say you do it at the store to avoid the clean-up at home. Why not just husk it over the trash can like we do? We have zero clean-up to do as everything goes into the trash.

I do. Am I bad person?

If you are so am I. I don't get people getting bent out of shape over something a store allows it's customers to do. If this is the worst thing I do in life heaven is pretty much a shoe in :rotfl2: .

Taken out of context, this is pretty funny :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Nope. I just didn't know why anyone would. To be honest, I have yet to hear a good reason.

The one thing that I do find annoying is that all the folks husking in the store are blocking the corn bin. I had to squeeze in between them to get my corn.

Maybe we are just exceptionally neat, but we just husk the corn over the trash can in the kitchen. No mess at all. It all goes into the trash can.

Really?
Maybe our corn is just hairier. Or maybe it's my four messy kids. :confused3
