Do you husk corn at the store? Why?

We were just at the supermarket. Trying to buy corn on the cob, I had to squeeze in between the 4 women who were standing there husking all the corn at the stand.

So admit it. Do you husk the corn at the store and, if so, why? What advantage is there to husking it there instead of at home? I would think it would stay fresh longer in the husk. Also, if we are cooking it on the grill we want the husk on.

Enlighten me as to why someone would want to husk it at the store.

we husk in the store because we buy it the same day we eat it. It saves us from making a mess at home. If we are not eating it the same day we buy it, I don't husk it at the store.

No, and I don't understand it either. :confused3 I peel the husk back a little bit to make sure the corn looks good and fresh, but that's the extent of it.

I've always wondered the same thing. :confused3

Nope, and I've always wondered why, too. The husking is one of the very few jobs that my kids actually LIKE to do!!

This is an easy one for me to answer, although I do not husk at the store but sometimes I wish I did!!!!

It is because you get the corn home and some of them end up having mold, yuck, and you have to throw it away!

Never. A damp husk keeps the corn form breaking down and turning the sugar into starch. I really love the ones who husk it back into the pile of corn.

I DON'T do this and I get annoyed with those who do, but if the corn is being sold by the pound as opposed to by the ear you're going to pay less money without the husks. If it's being sold at say, 10 for $1.00, then there's absolutely no reason anyone should do this.

No way! It's rude. No one should have to deal with that mess that would be left behind by someone else. We husk them at home, on the porch over a paper bag

Maybe its just a local thing, but our stores will have large trash cans around the corn so that people just throw their own husks away.

That's what ours do too. Nobody leaves it in the pile of corn.

Our stores do this, too. Sometimes there are so many people gathered around the trash can husking their corn that you can't get to the corn. They always look at me weird when I don't husk mine there. :confused3

I like to buy my corn the day I'm going to fix it. So sometimes I will husk it in the store if there is a trash can there. It just means less mess for me at home. If I'm going to keep it a day, I'll leave the husks on. And I NEVER leave a mess behind. That would be rude.

Maybe we are just exceptionally neat, but we just husk the corn over the trash can in the kitchen. No mess at all. It all goes into the trash can.

If I have the time I do. I don't buy corn until the day we're going to eat it so keeping it fresh isn't an issue. The benefit is not having to clean up that mess in my house.

BTW, our store provides a garbage bin next to the corn for the husks and silk. I wouldn't do it at a place that didn't have that set up.

I don't buy corn that often, but when I do I find myself peeling the husk back ever so slightly to make sure there's not a worm burrowed right under there. I must have found a burrowed worm in an ear of corn once and am a little phobic about it now. In fact when I saw the title of this thread I just assumed everyone's answer would be "Looking for worms" :teeth:.

I've never seen anyone take the husk entirely off and leave it at the store. That must be a regional thing, but I see one of you at least one of you is from Oklahoma (part of the same general region as here).

We husk at home... over the trash can so very little mess.

I do try to remember to check the corn at the store as I've gotten some nasty ones over the years.

I would never do it at the store. Also, I always thought the term was "shucking", not "husking". Anyone know the right term? Or are they both correct?

Maybe it comes from all these years living in the Garden State, but I learned long ago how to buy corn. You choose the ears that are heavy for their size. Those are the ones with fully developed kernels, no mold and no worms. There is no need to peel back the husk in the store. I can honestly say we have never gotten a bad ear using that method.
