Do you have to specify your state?

I live in a state where I have to specify that it is the state.

I just say I live in Northern NJ near NYC. LOL. I am to tired to tell people the town cause I get *** looks sometimes.

:lmao: Hence, I have learned quickly to just say Chicago area (and NO, I don't add Illinois onto it). Although, occassionally someone will have heard of our town but it's just so much easier to say Chicago/Chicago area.

I don't think I have ever had anyone actually question it as in "Chicago, Illinois?" ;)

Then again, if someone said "Springfield" to me, I would automatically assume they meant Illinois even though that might not be the case.

IF I were to use my actual city, then yes I would add the state because it's possible more than one state has one. I know for a fact NY has one to the town I grew up in because our town was named after that one.

Edited to add: Yet, I just realized my "location" says "Chicagoland Illinois" -- :rotfl2: I guess just in case someone didn't realize where Chicago was (is there another one anywhere????? I really don't know. Hmmm.)

I have to, because I think every state has a Salem. ;) I live in Salem, NH and work in Salem, MA, so I even have to specify which state when I'm at work and someone asks where I live. :)

That's cute.

I don't bother with a city or state; it's just so cal most of the time.

When I'm on eBay, and ask a seller a shipping quote, I now even specify the continent.
I can somehow understand that people don't know in which country Brussels is, but jeesh, when I ask them a quote for Brussels, Belgium, and they ask me in which state it is, i'm rather

So, now I ask them for a quote to Brussels, Belgium (Europe) :)

Most people in the states know where Salt Lake City is, but when we travel abroad or meet visitors from overseas we often have to specify Utah - and then explain that it's where the Olympics were or that it's the "wild west" and then they get it.

Most of the time "Indy" will suffice. I am sometimes asked by telephone call center folks on the phone, "Indiana?". Didn't know there were any other Indianapolises.

I just say Brooklyn. If you don't know where that is then I really don't need to be tawkin' to ya.... :rotfl2:

I have run into a number of other Louisville's but I think they are usually pronounced with the "s". I once referred to Louisville, CO with the Kentucky pronunciation and go some interesting looks.

All I say is Palm Beach or West Palm Beach and everyone knows where I'm from. :)

Nope. Most people know that Indianapolis is in Indiana. We can just say Indianapolis or Indy.

I don't think I have to specify the state but when I'm really far away, I do. When I was in CA, I said I was from Buffalo, NY. When I was in Boston, I just said Buffalo.

No one have ever assumed I was from one of the other Buffalo's in this nation. I think usually when you hear Buffalo you think snow and NY.

I always say what state and even then that's not enough. I told somebody one time was from New Hampshire. Their response was "Isn't that the capitol on New England".
And yes, they were dead serious.

I always say New York instead of Long Island.

People figure out where I'm from as soon as I talk.

That reminds me of last August, when I was calling Disney to make my ADRs for dining at DL. I also wanted to book a tour, and to do that, I had to pay by VISA over the phone. Fine, no prob. And THEN, all misery began!

For the dining ADRs, I give my mom's name, which is not too difficult. Since the VISA is one my name, I had to spell out my name for the CM, and THEN, I had to spell my address... It was awful, and it had to be good, since otherwise, the payment wouldn't get accepted! To top it all, by the time I had to say my city, I said Brussels. I mean, ya'll know Brussels sprouts, right? She had never heard of it... Country: Belgium. You know, Belgium waffles??? She had never heard of it!!! so I even had to spell THAT for her.

I am sure i'm not the first international guest they have. Right??

I live in Washington. State.

I always say the WA with my city - most people haven't heard of it, even though it's the biggest city along the top of the nation from Minneapolis to Seattle.

For work (I work from home and the "water cooler" is an office chat room that I must be in while working)....

I say generically the Orlando area..but on the coast.

To those familiar with my area, but not my city...I will list the main city...for those in my area I specify the individual city.

At WDW when speaking with cast members, I will list the main city and they mostly know exactly where that is.

But for my city--I would have to specify the state.

Everyone knows Fort Mill. :lmao:

I usually say it is across the stateline from Charlotte, NC and I still get the  . I think most people think Charlotte is near Raleigh in the middle of NC.
