Do you have to open mesh backpacks at security?

I'm wondering if I was to bring a mesh backpack with our diapers, wipes, change of clothes and snacks if I'd still have to open it up for them to look inside. For some reason I seem to pick the slowest, most thorough old lady and it takes a good 2 minutes for me to get through and meet up with the rest of my family and people get annoyed when I am trying to "cut" in line to meet up with them.

We always get to security before it opens (we try to be toward the front of the line) and I HATE being "that person" backing up the line because I have so many zippers

It all depends on the security guard...some might not, but some might. I think it also depends on how full the bag looks. If it looks like there might be items not visible through the mesh, then they might ask you to open it so they can look inside. They'll still ask you to take it off and place it on the table.

My kids had a mesh like bag that they carried their pens autograph books and a few other things in and they did not open it they just turned it over and looked thru the mesh....I wish they hadn't broke the straps on those they would carry them again.

We were there the first week in June and they had my mom open her mesh back pack every time we went through the security check.

I agree that it is going to depend on the security guard, but if the bag looks like it includes things that can't be seen easily or looks very full you'll probably have to unzip it. Since you'll have to take it off and put it on the table anyway, it might be easier just to have it unzipped. There's a table just past the security guard where you can easily zip up everything afterwards.

I just got back from DLR. I carried a clear vinyl bag but still had to unzip the top so they could look inside. And all bags had to be taken off the strollers, and we had to take the kids' jackets out of the stroller basket so they could look into the basket.
