Do you have to have a computer to use a digital camera?

I know this sounds kind of silly.

We already have a digital camera but our computer had to be kind of rigged to be able to use it. Something was wrong, our hard drive had to be partitioned, we have two operating systems and the pictures have to be downloaded to one OS and transferred to the other, blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, our daughter now wants a digital camera of her own. She says that she mainly wants it to be able to see the pictures before she has them developed(on the little screen on the camera). They now have the system at Wal-mart where you can take in your memory card and you can choose which pictures you want developed for 29cents each. Does she really need to download the software that comes with it if she doesn't want to look at them on our computer. We are afraid that downloading it may be impossible(given the mega-trouble that we had with ours) or it might mess up what we already have. Our camera does not have a memory card so I am not sure how those work. Can she erase the card from the camera?

She will not be living with us too much longer. She just graduated from college and as soon as she has a job she will be moving out on her own and will probably have a computer of her own. She can then put the software on her own computer.

Thanks for your help.

What you have described should work.

Many photo-developing locations have the equipment you've described, where the user can upload photos from the memory card to the photo printer.

And you can delete photos from the memory card with the utilities built into the digital camera.

Thanks for the quick reply Kathy!! We are on our way out to get one now. She is so excited.

Since memory cards have limited capacity, i would suggest that she not only get the prints of the ones she wants, but have a picture cd made of them. The walmart machine you described has an option for this. That way if in the future she wants to get a duplicate made she has the orginal file (which is sorta like the negative, because its whats going to give you the best print). Its more expensive then doing it yourself, but it does eliminate the need for a pc.

Good idea. I hadn't thought of that aspect of it. She got a Fuji Fine Pix 2800. Seems really nice.
