Do you have recurring dreams?

One of my recurring dreams is quite bizarre. The odd thing is that my other sisters don't have them. When my father passed away, I would dream he came to visit me. I knew he had passed away, but the Lord allowed him to visit me. When my mom passed away, the 2 of them would visit together. Now that my DSis is gone, it is she who comes to visit. It's heartbreaking to wake up & know that they're not really there, but I pray that the visits never end.

I also have some of the others listed, but these are the most frequent.

ETA: I'll admit I haven't read all the replies yet. Some of them reminded me. I also have dreams where I've lost my voice & can't communicate when it's most needed. Does that occur with many people?

From these posts it is a recurring theme among DISers to dream that we can't call 911 in an emergency - anyone else find that interesting as I do?

And the bathroom one too - I had forgotten about mine until I read these. Hmmm...

Yah...I have those two recurring themes too. It is shocking to read this thread and realize that my odd dreams are normal.

I wonder why we all have such similar dreams

When I was little I used to dream over and over I was Pinocchio and I could jump off our loft and fly.

Now I constantly dream I am in my old house (either my parents bought it together, they have been divorced 17 years!! Or my husband bought it for me) and the backyard has been transformed into all these swimming pools, tons of different swimming pools! It is so odd! In fact any dream with a swimming pool, there is never just one always 3 or more. :confused3

Then I have dreams where I can fly my pushing the air down with my arms, almost like I am flapping them but never that fast. Usually I'm in some sort of danger but sometimes I just like to fly around.

I've also had the 911 dream. I always get an automated system in mine! Never goes to anyone!

Annd regarding the school thing. I'm always my age (28) and back in High School. I never get my class chedule so I'm always roaming around looking for the class I'm suppsoed to be in! Strangely some of my friends are there too and my age!

I frequently have dreams about two of my biggest fears. Tornados and elevators. The tornado dreams are especially vivid and realistic. Very scary! The elevator dreams are always that the elevator is not only falling, it is flipping all around like some carnival ride. The dreams always have ended up ending on their own or I wake myself up. I've also had a few very frightening plane crash nightmares. Those also scare me so much that I end up waking myself up. Oh boy, I bet I'll have a scary dream tonight!

Oh my gosh! I've had that elevator dream too! Usually its a Willy Wonka elevator with a million buttons and sometimes its a normal one but it never ever goes where I want it to and sometimes it drops, flips all crazy, etc! Scary! I forgot about that until now! I've had that dream quite a few times in the last 6 months too!

And i just thought of a recurring nightmare. I'm usually in a large field with all my family and bombs start coming out of the sky and blowing everything up. One this was happening at Disneyland in my dream. Usually I can get my family to a safe spot but there have been a few occassions where I couldn't. I that is still 9/11 stress getting to me.

Ok I'll stop now. I love my dreams and remember most of them and I'm sure if I stay on this thread I'll start to be annoying.

I have had dreams where I go back to the same place in more than one dream. Like a house that I have never lived in. I will dream about the same house several times. I have had many dreams of houses where I find secret rooms.

I have also had dreams about swimming in the ocean where I could actually breathe the water. These are lucid dreams where I can control them.
I have also had many dreams where I take a rocket into space or where my body is flying through space.

My DS (10) had a dream where he was walking with Jesus back in those times and Jesus was preaching to people. DS could understand some of it, but could not understand a lot of it.

Seems like the showing up for a final after not being in class all semester is a common one around here. I have that one too. Wonder what it says about all of us? :teeth:

I've read somewhere that the teeth falling out dream means that you have trust issues with someone close to you.

I have two reoccurring dreams. In one of them I'm stuck on top of some sort of tower or very high building and I can't get down. Everyone is at the bottom urging me to come down, but I'm paralyzed with fear and can't bring myself to climb down. I hate that one.

The other one I'm at a party and I'm looking for an old friend of mine. I know he's supposed to be there and I search all night for him, but I can never find him. Just when I have to leave, he walks in the door and I never get a chance to talk to him. I've had this dream at least a few times a month for the past 10 years or so. DH doesn't know about that one! ;)

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread. After posting about mine I then decided to talk to someone about it and get it off my chest. They helped me work through it. I feel a LOT better now. :goodvibes

I have a dream that recurs in times of stress. I'm usually in an alley or enclosed area of some sort (loading docks, that sort of thing). I'm in a fist fight with somebody (I never see a face) and it's like I'm punching and kicking way too slow. Like I'm in water rather than air.

I also have those 'finals' dreams. Been out of college for 13 years.

A very common theme for me is that my life is in danger and I'm having to escape whatever the danger is. Sometimes, it involves me rescuing someone else and thus putting myself in danger.

On occasion, I'm on some quest LOTR-style.

And it's not uncommon at all for me to be back in school.

I almost never have calming dreams. :/ And I wonder why I'm so tired all the time? LOL!

I have a consistent dream where I am trying to dial the phone - sometimes 911, sometimes just a friend, but I mis-dial and have to start over. And mis-dial and have to start over. And mis-dial . . . . You'd think I'd be confident I could dial a total of THREE numbers in an emergency, but I mis-dial and . . . ..
::yes:: I've had that one, too

Holy crap.....are you naked and swinging a dead chicken over your head????? Me too....that's so weird :teeth:

I have lots of weird, semi recurring dreams - the themes are the same even though the actual dreams have differences. The main similarity is that in almost all cases I am up in the air when I fall into the water- I am completely afraid but in most cases once I hit the water, I'm safe- much to my surprise.

Example: I had a dream I was on a plane to WDW alone. A man was shooting up the plane and shot a hole in the side. We swirled to the ground and I was convinced we'd die, but we landed softly in water ( I don't know how) and the horrible sounds were replaced with this really calm reassurring narrative. Once I walked through the water (filled with baby marine life- fish, turtles, etc.) I met my family, boyfriend, all those I'm closest to on the beach and it was all peaceful.

Another time I had a dream I was on a cliff in California (although I've never been) and someone pushed me, and I fell towards the water thinking I"m going to die, but instead I landed on a surfboard and started to surf.

I've also had many dreams where I'm in a boat wreck but dash through the corridors and am saved from the water.

I don't know what it is, but they all involve falling, water and fear, even though I'm okay in the end.

Now, don't get creeped out, but sometimes relatives who have passed visit me in my dreams. Now, I don't know for certain that it is their spirit talking to me, or if it is just a dream that I make up because I miss them, or what, but I've visited with all four of my grandparents in my dreams.

Here's a tangential one:

Have you ever had a dream that someone else experienced?

My nephew (age 3, with whom i am extremely close) was talking about scary dreams, as he has vivid scary dreams exactly like I do, and I was trying to reassure him by telling him how I try to think of Disney before I go to sleep and being with everybody and having fun (and I start naming family members like we often do with lil ones) so I have good dreams. And as I was saying this I was thinking of my *dream* of having a Disney wedding and everyone, esp. my elderly dad, being there, etc. and he asks me "Do you mean where we're in the dark room by the castle watching you and Grandpa dance? Do you mean that dream?" I did tear up a little thinking he must somehow see that image of us dancing.

I also had a dream about two bichon frise puppies once while my boyfriend was asleep in the same room. When I woke up, for some reason I felt like he had talked to me during the night and I wasn't sure if I really dreamed about the puppies or he told me, so I asked him "Did you wake me up to ask me about two dogs?" and he asked me "Two bichon frises?" I said "Yes" He said "No, I never talked to you, that's what I dreamed about!" He was really creeped out.

My parents have also had simultaneous dreams/telepathy.

Do you guys see color in your dreams? I've heard we don't see in color, we don't see numbers or letters, can't smell etc. I don't know how this can be, because I've seen numbers, letters, and colors in mine- I've even written them down when I wake up. I have definitely been able to smell and taste. I love when I dream that I eat an oreo or pizza and wake up to find I didn't really eat it, but it's zero calorie counterpart!

A recurring theme in my dreams is flying. Good dream.
Prophetic dreams usually not good. One of the prophetic dreams involves the one mentioned above by many posters of teeth falling out.....EVERY time I have this dream someone close to me usually comes to me a couple of days later and tells me they are going to have a baby. ALWAYS. The only phophetic dream that is good. The rest are usually about a family member dieing. I dreamed for 7 nights that my dad, brother, grandmother, uncle and grandfather were going to die the person's face in the casket kept changing. With in 7 months all were gone and they died in the order of the face change. That was a really rough year.

Lulu -- yes, I've had shared dream elements with my mom. It's so strange when our dreams are similar enough to be more than coincidence.

Froggyswife -- I'm sorry, that year must have been really rough! :(

Y'all are lucky.

Recurring dreams are the easiest way to get into lucid dreaming. The rest of us have to work our butts off to get lucid. People who have recurring dreams have built-in cues that make lucidity easy.

For a really good overview of what lucidity is, how it works, and how to use it to turn nightmares into amazing experiences, see here:
http://www.lucidity.com/LucidDreamingFAQ2.html

Way back when, a friend of mine's 5-year-old was having recurring nightmares. He called them "monster dreams." He'd wake up terrified and yelling, night after night.

I sat him down one day and talked with him about them. "Do you ever see monsters when you're awake?"

"No..."

"So the only time you see monsters is in your dreams, right?"

"Yeah..."

"You ever fly in your dreams?"

"Yeah!"

"So, the next time you see a monster, fly away."

"Oh. Okay!"

For the next few days, every time I saw him, I'd ask him, "What do you do if you see a monster?" and he'd yell, "Fly away!"

One morning he ran up to me, bursting with excitement. "I saw a monster, and I flew away! And then I knew it was a dream, and I had these rockets under my arms, and I flew back and I blew him up!"

I'd love to have recurring dreams.

My dream that I've had a lot over the years takes me back to high school. I was Captain of the field hockey team. I forgot my hockey stick and was unable to play!! Now I really was Captain of the hockey team back then but I never forgot anything, never missed a game. I guess it was just one of my fears back then. I'd always check and re-check to be sure I had everything I needed.

Ahhh...life was so simple.
