BTW, working in collections, how do you know what people paid instead of paying the money they borrowed? Did they tell you that, or was it more of those nice assumptions that everyone likes to make?

It was my job to find out.
And yes, people would tell you anything if you asked the right questions.

Ours would have been over $9,000 a year if we had continued with it. Others that I have looked at since are more with even higher deductibles and less coverage.

That may not be a lot to some but that is way more than we can afford at this time.

I can afford health insurance without a problem.

DH has not been able to get it for years now because he went to a doctor for a migraine.

Yep, that's right a migraine. So DH has been denied coverage for over 3 years now.

Any response to people who can afford it and cannot get it?

I have been having this argument with my MIL for the last 6 months...she wants DH to go to the doctor for high blood pressure, I tell her we can't get insurance for DH. As someone in her 60's who has insurance because she worked as a teacher, she cannot understand not being able to get insurance.

Although your husband's reasons for not having it and my husband's reasons are different; we run into this same argument with family. Several members of my family are military and one that is not works for a health care company that provides health insurance in the form of all of the doctor's bills are free. They do not understand the possibility of not being able to get insurance or to not afford it.

My mother has started understanding it as she is seeing so many of the friends of my sons who are just starting out and don't have any kind of insurance simply because they cannot afford it.

What do those waiting times have to do with health care proposals in the U.S.?

The government is not going to run an insurance plan that covers ALL of us. In what bill has this been proposed? My understanding if they government would run a health plan that people who are uninsured, or have been turned down by private insurers, can join. If you fear the government would make you wait for treatment, then keep your private insurance.

I think the real fear is that if everyone in this country had insurance, whether govt or private, wait times would increase because demand would increase. And that fear is justified; our medical system is barely keeping up with the current level of demand, with many people not seeking treatment because of insurance/financial status. We need a sizable share of our population to remain uninsured and unable to afford care to maintain the status quo of short/no wait times for non-emergent treatment.

Yes, we have health insurance. Sadly it's through my job though so I've never been able to stay home with the kids like I've always wanted.

Honestly, nothing is going to matter unless Americans collectively get off their fat *** es and start exercising more, following the nutrition guidelines, and stop smoking! Yes there are lots of other things (stress, alcohol, genetics, etc). But these are the three biggies. Until then, health care costs will continue to rise dramatically.

Since that's unlikely to every happen, I suggest that people maintain a healthy lifestyle to minimize their health care costs.

This thread is pretty simple and requires nothing more than a yes or no poll response. It seems some have insisted on adding political comments and that is not appropriate.

Feel free to answer the original question and make comments in response to that, but dragging politics into the discussion won't be allowed.

Thanks.

... Yes, I have insurance. :) Last year, for DW and myself, we paid over $24K, but were able to cut that by almost 50% this year by increasing our annual deductible to $7,500 each when faced with yet another increase. This is for an individual policy.

Just close the thread please, thanks, I have said over and over that all I wanted was an idea of how the stats looked compared to what was reported in the news.

I think enough have voted that I got a good idea and I do not want to see anyone get into touble for discussing how they feel about HCC in the US.

It was not meant to be a political discussion.

I recently applied for health insurance. I was rejected because I have Scoliosis (curvature of the spine), which was corrected when I was ten years old. EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO. :headache:

The search continues... :sad2:
