Since we are talking funny books, I'd recommend Confessions of a Shopaholic. Reminds me a little of Bridget Jones.

As far as some of my favorites: A Prayer for Owen Meany, Kite Runner, and The Glass Castle.

I love the shopaholic series too. I just bought the latest one for my plane ride to WDW.

I also enjoyed Wally Lamb "She's Come Undone".

"Little Children" was great. I read it before I even knew it was going to become a movie.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
This book really spoke to me for some reason.

Born in Fire, Born in Ice, and Born in Shame by Nora Roberts
I love all of her books but this trio are my favorite. I think because it is set in Ireland and very discriptive. LOVE it!

Night by Elie Wiesel
Just one of those books everyone she read.

Why the Red Fern Growns by Wilson Rawls
I read this book when I was a kid and loved it - I've held on to my copy from the 4th grade and plan on reading it to Chloe.

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown
Better then the Da Vinci Code and just a fabulous read!

Have you read any of Katherine Neville's books? There's 3 of them - The 8, Magic Circle, and Calculated Risk. Those are pretty good too.

I think Lincoln Child is the best out there right now for adventure thrillers. I'm surprised so few people on the CB mention his books. Death Match was so good and I can't wait until my Dad finishes reading his latest so I can have at it.

I'm going to put Katherine Neville on reserve today. Thanks for the recommendation! I totally forgot that I'd bought DH the newest Lincoln Child for Christmas. He must have shelved it without telling me--which I find incredibly hard to believe! Thanks for the reminder.

apirateslifeforme--that's a great list! Oddly enough, The Picture of Dorian Gray was dd's favorite book when she was about 8. She found a copy at the library that had pictures and descriptions of Victorian England in the margins and she was in love with it and would check it out once a month or so. I tried to tell her it was too old for her but she kept plugging away at it. I finally found a copy like that on Amazon (I'd tried to give her my old paperback version but it was just NOT the same according to dd) and gave it to her for her birthday one year. She's 16 now and will still re-read it once in awhile. It's kind of a joke in our family that she had such a strange favorite for an 8 year old.

The best book I've read lately was truly HILARIOUS:

"We Thought You'd Be Prettier: True Tales of the Dorkiest Girl Alive" by Laurie Notaro. My brother got me this one and at first I was offended at the title ( ) but then I literally LOL'd all the way through it.

Ah, another great books thread. I must subscribe! I am reading "The Glass Castle" right now....kinda like Angela's Ashes. Hard to imagine a life like that.

"The Kite Runner" was awesome. So interesting.

I also like John Irving (especially Owen Meany..."an unspeakable outrage!")

I love anything by Amy Tan...her novels are so rich.

"Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides was excellent...one of those books you don't want to finish 'cause you'll miss it.

I have Outlander but haven't read it yet.

Here are some of my all-time favorites that I find myself recommending again and again:

"My Name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok (and the sequel, "The Gift of Asher Lev")

"Cry the Beloved Country"

Any Dorothy Sayers mystery, but my favorite is Gaudy Night. I usually don't recommend that people start with Gaudy Night since it falls towards the end chronologically; Whose Body or Clouds of Witnesses are better for starting the series.

"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe

The Joliffe mysteries by Margaret Frazer (or her Dame Frevisse mystery series too, for that matter)

The Sister Fidelma mysteries by Peter Tremayne

Any Jane Austen, but Sense & Sensibility is my favorite

I'm also a sentimental fan of Lucy Maude Montgomery, the author of the Anne of Green Gables books, and I have enjoyed exploring her novels beyond just the Anne series. They're definitely light reading, but very nice for sitting on a beach and being reminded of my youth.

Oooh, is this a macho author? I'm looking for something for DH right now - he's read all of Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy and WEB Griffin, and I'm at a loss on what to suggest next. But it has to be a REAL MAN book for him to want to read it.

Mal, I LOVE Laurie Notaro. You need to go directly to the bookstore and get The Idiot Girls Action Adventure Club. Right now. I'll wait.

It's the first one I read of hers and it's laugh out loud, call someone and read it out loud to them funny. But don't lend it to anyone because they'll keep it and you'll have to buy a new copy. Like me.

I also liked I Love Everybody, too.

"The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold. It's my favorite book ever, and I read it about once a year. It's such a unique and amazing story. Everyone I've recommended it to has loved it.

I also like books by Jodi Piccoult and Jennifer Weiner.

Hmm... I think it might be too fluffy for someone that likes "macho" books. James Rollins or Matthew Reilly might be up his alley a bit more.

Although Ice Hunt and Riptide by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child is a bit more manly.

katerkat, my DH loves Lincoln Child and also the books he co-wrote with Douglas Preston. We fight over them. He reads too slowly.

DH is also a Clive Cussler/Tom Clancy fan, if that's any help.

Aww, you stole mine! I loved Poisonwood. I tend to recommend that and The Sound and the Fury. I read it at least once a year.
