Inspired by the other irational phobia thread.

What's your irrational phobia?

Mine is vomit/vomiting.

Got so bad before I started controlling it that I couldn't even watch tv. Anxiety control methods and having dogs has much improved it.

Before if my Dh's dog even coughed I would have a panic attack (she was old and had a condition that made her cough sound like she was going to puke) Now I can deal with it, in fact my dog barfed on my lap when I was sitting on the couch with dh. My first thought wasn't to panic, it was "man. now I have to get up and change and scrub the couch." That wouldn't have been the case 3 years ago.

So I spilled my beans... spill yours!

Mine's the same as yours, OP...vomit. It renders me useless--the thought, the fear, the sight... It's awful! People talk about it so cavalierly and I internally panic when they do...

Needles. Going strong for 30 years now on that phobia.

So bad that I freak out when people think it is funny to test my phobia by giving me finger "shots" in the arm. I really freak out even just from that.

History of passing out--so now I do a special procedure when having to go to the doctors office with anything involving the needle. And that applies even for my children. (requires a 2nd person and if one is not available, we have to do some interesting thing so that in case I do pass out, I don't endanger myself or my child.)

I've even passed out from putting earrings in my ears. :lmao:

No desire to seek any kind of therapy to get over this phobia and I'm getting heebed by talking about it.

I really turn into a 2yo when I have to deal with shots. :scared1:

I'm over 35 and pregnant and the only reason that I cared to turn down the amnio--there ain't know way I'm letting them do that to me.:scared1:

And no "it's not that bad" does me no good.

Phobias are "irrational" by nature.

(And I believe my reason is a physical act demonsrating that my skin is very permeable. EEEEEEEK!!!!!!!!!:scared1: It's just not something I wanted to know and my brain just cannot witness.)

Electrical fires
Severe claustrophobia

Birds. I am absolutely terrified of them. It does cause my family great amusement to watch me run from them when we are down the shore.

Good grief! How could I have forgotten to include BIRDS in my list? Especially large groups of them - like crows and such.. When I was much, much younger I watched Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and I go nuts when I see (or hear) gatherings of birds now (which unfortunately is quite common with those HUGE black crows here are the lake!)..:eek::eek:

By the way, add me to the birds list. I am mostly afraid of them flying. It makes me feel so out of control...the noise of their wings flapping and the fear they might land on me. The idea of the feeling of their boney feet kind of gives me a gag reflex. UGH!

Slugs. I am seriously terrified of slugs. We get them in our house sometimes and I have panic attacks. I will wake hubby up from a dead sleep if I see one in the house to make him remove it. Oooh I hate those things, freak me out

Very afraid of elevators (yet Tower of Terror is my favorite Disney ride)
Kites- I'm afraid of someone getting carried away with one and/or them hitting a powerline and starting a fire (I'm sure that came from well-meaning fire safety thing at school.)
Small monkeys- I've seen WAY too many movies that some mutant virus starts with them ala "12 Monkeys", "Outbreak", "28 days"... Plus I am forever scarred by those creepy "flying" monkeys from the "Wizard of Oz".

I don't think any fear is irrational really. This fear is real to you. My fear is heights. I can't get 2 ft off the ground without being weak in the knees and woozy.

i have an extremely intense phobia of crickets.

i've never been treated for it, and i probably never will. thinking about crickets triggers my sympathetic nervous system to become active, i'm not sure i could sign up for therapy, knowing i would eventually have to deal with the fear that way. its too scary.

once, i was at my parent's house and there was a cricket in the garage. i ran to the car, in hysterics and locked myself in, and wouldn't roll the window down. i was afraid they would get in...and then i don't know what.

i've been touched by them. (ugh, i'm shaking typing this) and they didn't hurt me physically, but my fear response and the time afterwards HURTS, so yes, they hurt me, no matter how irrational that is.

once i was at a football game, and a plague of locust sat down on the stadium. i think i actually passed out from fear, i can't remember anything after that point. but i'm told that i curled up into a ball and cried for almost an hour.

i'm consequently afraid of walking through dark grass (i'm afraid they'll jump on me and i can't see them.) and i'm pretty much an incredibly jumpy person. if anything small brushes against me or falls on me or flies towards me (like small leaves or moths) i start freaking out.

once i reached my hand into a box that had a dead cricket in it (and i never picked up another box out of the garage after that.) and i touched it, and i almost died. i really did. i felt like everything inside me suddenly moved around. i had to shower three or four times, and the beast had to be throw away far away from the house, even though it was dead and couldn't hurt me.

phobias are a horrible horrible disorder. i wouldn't wish them on anyone. recounting all of those stories has gotten me shaking and my heart beating fast. :sad2: i really hope i'm one of the more severe cases, and not everyone feels this way. i know phobias only affect 7% of the population, but still, i hope most aren't this serious. i suffer from this every single day of my life, even if i don't see a cricket, i'm afraid i will.

Clowns attack you when you sleep.

Just don't leave a leg dangling off of the edge and you'll be ok. Or the closet door open.

I have general things that freak me out, but aren't outright phobias like (see above) dangling my foot off of the bed.

Mirrors at night. Creeeeppppyyyy.

Spiders. I swear they are going to chase me down and attack me.

Then I have "real" fears like when my heart stops for a second when the phone rings in the middle of the night. I have the fear that something will happen to someone I love.

Once I had a dream that the phone rang in the middle of the night and my mom told me my brother was killed in a car accident. It was the most realistic dream I have ever had. It's been several years now and my brother is still alive, so luckily it was just a dream. It freaks me out to even think about it though, it was THAT real.

Mustard. Seriously, tears and sometimes panic attacks will happen.

my DD10 has a true phobia of ketchup. i was looking up stuff on line and learned of a condiment phobia. she didn't like to be around any condiments, but ketchup especially freaked her out. she is somewhat better now. she can at least be in the same room, just don't let her see it, or put it near her.

i knew a boy who was terrified of fruit. :confused3

Dentists. I have had several panic attacks at the dentist's office. Sometimes I have to vomit in the parking lot before I go in. In order to get my teeth cleaned, I have to: take Ativan, bring my special blanket, take my shoes off, put on the earbuds, crank up the nitrous, and STILL I sometimes will have a panic breakthrough.I've had to have a few crowns and a root canal and they were EVENTFUL, let me tell you. :sad2: It's awful! My hat is off to my dentist and his hygenist--they always treat me with repect and kindness. I don't know how they stand me.

Rats/mice, it doesn't matter to me, they are both the same. I cannot stand to view a pic of either, I don't EVER want to see them, period. Not even in a pet store. I HATE when one goes scurrying across my screen when I'm watching something on TV.

I once was trying to tame some wild cats and the one cat loved me (both of us having the same mortal enemy you know, the enemy of my enemy is my friend type thing, is why I LOVE CATS lol). So, they say cats feel you're too dumb to catch your own mouse, so that's why they bring them home to you. Well, in comes the cat, I JUMP onto the counter because he had a present for me. It was dead of course. I stood on the cabinet till someone came home and discarded the rodent for me all the while bewildering the cat.

It's an all out phobia for me. I was bit by a rat when I was little and had to go thru the rabies prep that they used to do at the time.

I also have paranoia where my children are concerned. I worry about everything. I am just so afraid something bad will happen. I need to deal with this since they are both going off to colleges next year. :(
