Do you have a dog door?

So your slider is open all the time but the door part blocks out the outside weather or do you have to open the slider so the dog can use the door?
If you're not stupid like us and you don't lose the weather stripping that comes with the dog door, you can install it in the same track as the slider and there's some kind of mechanism for locking the door. If you are stupid like us, you just put the thing in the track with the screen door, and you close the slider and lock it the reguar way.

We have one in a window, it works well for the space there are low windows and we just didn't have a place for one in a door. We usually keep it closed when we aren't home, it is open at night but one of our dogs is elderly and needs to go out during the night so it helps there. No problems with other animals, there was a raccoon in our yard one night but it didn't come into the house.

This is a link to the place I got the door from : http://www.petdoors.com/thermosash.htm

I don't have one because the dog gets too muddy and I don't want him tracking mud in...I want to wash his feet first.

Oh, another good point.

But that screen door one does look pretty cool, and so much less permanent than others I've seen.

We have a dog door, honestly it is the best thing if you have a dog that wants to go in and out constantly like ours does. We have a small dog and one of the smallest dog doors available. My husband cut a whole through a wall in our house that is beside our deck, luckily he cut it level.... :woohoo:. We have never worried about any critters because we don't get anything wandering up on our deck as it is about 10 feet off the ground. We also have a big fenced in yard so we don't have to worry about the dog getting outside the yard. It is great when you are gone for long periods of time during the day because I don't have to feel bad that she has to "go" and no one is home to let her out. I also thinks it helps in them not feeling as cooped up and ours isn't hyper when we get home. We love it.

The only hard part was training our dog to go through it, she really was afraid of it at first and it took some patience before she was using it at will.

We live in the northeast and I don't notice it is drafty at all. It also comes with a hard plexiglass piece that goes over the opening ( besides the plastic flaps) if you need the extra protection.

It is a wise investment but I don't think I would want a whole in my wall to fit a St Bernard through, however it is great for our 10 lb Lhasa Apso...:)

Good Luck!

Our dog is small, so I don't think we would have to worry about people going through the door. The yard is fenced so critters and people aren't an issue either. I just would like to be able to have the freedom of leaving the dog for a long time and not have to worry about her going in the house. We will have things like all day marching band competitions and we can't take her along.
