Do you have a cause? (inspired by Deb in IA)

Hey, it's been a long time since I inspired a thread!!! Thanks, Marseeya!!!

Prevention of childhood injury -- like no surprise, huh??? ;)

My passionate causes: The Morgan Nick Foundation (for protection of children against sexual predators) and currently for all the exotic birds that became homeless as a result of the US Coastal Hurricanes.

I'm a little obsessive about the bird rescue thing--I've been visiting petfinder.com daily to see if any birdies need homes...

Remember--eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. Without each of us having and holding a cause that suits our lives, our country will not remain free.

Basic human rights for ALL citizens, regardless of one's sexuality. religion, sex, etc.... I defy anyone to try to keep me from marrying my partner of 15 years. You try, I'll just fight all that much harder and shout you down and I won't stop until I win. And it will happen soon enough.

Book banning - no one on this planet will ever tell me what I can or cannot read, and I'll fight like hell to maintain that right for myself and anyone else.

You go! :cheer2:

Can DH and I shout with you? :goodvibes We will never understand the argument that gay marriage will undermine OUR marriage. If the institution of marriage is so weak that allowing same-sex people the honor will bring it down, maybe it needs to be brought down. (does that make sense?)

That's turning into a big cause for me as well. I've been learning more and more about birds over the past several years. Although, I don't think we'd be able to rescue any through petfinder... the nearest rescue (Pittsburgh) won't place birds outside the city, as they do home visits and won't drive very far. We're not ready for another bird yet anyway, but we definitely want to adopt another one in the future.

I should have mentioned book banning. I have a tendency to buy books that are banned from schools and the like just because.

I really hate most censorship though. Within reason, censorship itself should be banned.

Uhhh, lets see, I guess my "cause" is my constitutional right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness without anyone imposing their desires on me. That would include my reproductive rights, my sexual orientation, my right to privacy. I'm pretty passionate whenever I see those rights threatened as a result of other people wanting to dictate what is right for me.

Not sure I understand--you think doctor should encourage parents to abort a "defective" fetus or you think they should not?

This is a sore point with me as well. I have a son with a very rare chromosomal defect which has a poor prognosis. I'm actually glad we didn't know what he had before birth because we would have been advised to abort. We have heard all the terrible predictions, "vegetative", "die young", "poor quality of life." But I came to realize that none of our doctors had actually ever seen a child with my child's syndrome. So we quit asking their advice.

Today my 10yo son is one of the happiest kids on the planet. He walks, he feeds himself, he swims, he sings & plays the piano, he kisses and hugs us. He is very mentally handicapped and will always need 24hr supervision. But his "quality of life" is very good--he knows he is loved. He gives us more joy than you can imagine. I cry to think how many parents were given the terrible predictions that we heard and decided not to let the baby live. They'll never know the joy they missed.

Sorry to hijack the thread. Please don't turn this into a debate. This is just one of my passions.

Cathy--mom to Christian,the Amazing Wonder Boy, 10 (Pallister-Killian syndrome, tetrasomy 12p)

If you read my first two passions - funding for children with chromosomal abnormalities, and advocating for special needs, you would probably see that special needs kids really touch me.

I'm the mother of two children who were born with rare chromosome anomalies (18p-, 14q+, and partial Trisomy 14.

I was encouraged by too many doctors and other "well meaning" people to terminate my pregnancy. I'm obviously against aborting due to poor prenatal diagnosis.

I wasn't turning anything into a debate, just stating the issues I'm passionate about. You might want to check out the website in my siggy. :)

Makes perfect sense to me!!

Edited to add that I often and ardently thought that if anyone truly thinks that his/her/their marriage, or sanctity thereof, would be threatened in any way, shape or form, simply because Joe and I want to (and someday WILL) be married, then I strongly advise that those folks look deep within themselves and in their own homes first before casting stones. They clearly have their own issues regarding their own marriage and are simply looking for a scapegoat to place blame. There is no way my marriage will impact anyone, negative or positive. To think so is ludicrous.

No,no! :) I wasn't trying to debate with you, i just wasn't quite sure what you meant! I thought I remembered that you had lost two sons to chromosome disorders. Please forgive me if I seemed testy--I didn't mean to come across like that. :sunny:

I agree and that reminds me of something that happened last weekend. I was in a public place and there was a woman walking around with a babe in arms -- she was breastfeeding the baby while she was walking around. No blanket covering her, just the shirt covering her breast and it was actually very discreet. My friend (who was pretty disapproving) pointed it out to me and I just shrugged my shoulders and looked around the room to see what other people's reactions were.

Nobody else noticed.

Anyway, there was really no point to that story, other than I believe people just look for things to be offended about. It's a sad world we live in when a woman's breast and baby's nourishment is such an object of disgust.

I'm extremely passionate about supporting our Military.

I'm also very passionate about childbirth, and children in general.

The other thing that I am passionate about these days is not letting the ridiculous things in todays culture warp the minds of young children.

Animals, mainly dogs and cats and I'm definitely NOT a PETA fan. Also the treatment of overweight persons. Why is that the last acceptable form of discrimination in this country??? Who cares why they are overweight, that's not the issue.

Book banning is a pet peeve of mine. With all the things in today's society that can harm kids, why do people want them to stop reading? They don't have to agree with and do everything they read, but it will make them think. THINKING IS GOOD!

Other Issues: Public Education, Equal Rights for All, Battered Women.

Responsible pet ownership
and Book Banning is actually a big one of mine too...haha I'm actually in my Celebrate Banned Books Week t shirt as I type this.

anything relating to the Childfree by Choice

A Woman's Right To Choose

Animal rescue/animal rights (though I think PETA goes too far)
