Yes, I'm sick of people pretending the suggestive moves don't exist, and they keep debating about the skirts, how tought it is to compete, the athleticims involved. Stick to the point! Some of you obviously haven't seen the routines. I wouldn't call it naive, let's just say unfamiliar.

But many of you know exactly what we're talking about it, and you change the subject.

Once again my thought on it. Cheer mom tends to overlook the skanky moves their "CHILD", (yes I've been dragged to the comps for my nieces team 9&10 year olds and I've witnessed it) is doing because all the other teams do it and theirs have to do it if they want to win. If you say grinding the floor and spanking oneself to a rap song, not appropriate for 9 years olds anyway, let along doing it in front of a huge crowd is okay, thats just sad.

I completely agree with you. My DD10 is in competitive cheer. They work so hard to get where they are. I also agree with the poster that said the skirt might get in the way of performances. The make up IS GOBBED ON...but a person would look like a white ghost under all of those lights.

i know...we looked really good with the makeup on in nationals! And skirts have to be short...you cant swim with a skirt bathing suit...you cant tumble, stunt or jump in a long skirt...people need to get over it all and just look at what people wear in real life.

Who the hell said that is ok? I have never seen this behavior at one competition, NOT ONE! Maybe your nieces belong to teams that find "Skanky moves" appropriate but I would not allow my DD to participate with a so called team that did do this.

I really don't see how all these people can see anything sexual about cheerleading. :confused3 They are little girls. The dances are DANCES. Maybe you have to be really looking at it in a different way?

I don't think there should be anything sexual about cheerleading. And I understand how hard the kids work, that it's very athletic, and that the make-up works under the lights.

But my step daughter was 14yo when I was going to competitions - the moves they were doing IN COMPETITION were, to me, embarrasing. I don't know of a different way of looking at a young girl standing with her feet apart, thrusting her pelvis forward and back. Running their hands up and down their torso's, over their bosoms and butts, is sexual. Add to that the choices of music...............

I took dance for years and never saw anything like this. I've watched swimmers, ice skaters, gymnasts - yes, all scantily clad - but not overtly provocative.

And I've seen other cheerleading competitions which had none of what I saw my step daughter do. I do hope that's what you're referring to. But if you've never seen the stuff I'm talking about, you will probably be very surprised when you do.

so how do you feel about the dance moves that most of us were referring to, not skirt length?

Ok guys, this is just getting too weird. I don't understand how anyone can say that ALL cheerleaders are slutty. That just makes no sense at all. I am starting to wonder (like Briarmom stated) if there are not some "jealousy" issues going on here. :confused3

once again, one post is being read and no one is paying attention to the points made in other posts. :)

ONE person said that. ONE. There is some selective reading going on here.

Yes, and I (personally) acknowledged that. There is some selective reading going on there.

Not to mention that the person YOU quoted said the specific word 'anyone' in her post. More selective reading.

Yes, I am serious. By putting "slutty" in quotes are you suggesting that there is no such thing as a slutty dance move, or that people are just overreacting or what? Because some things are empirically slutty.

My niece was in a cheer/dance group. They had a routine that included a song by Salt 'n' Pepa called "Push It". I can't fully explain the meaning of the lyrics on this board, but take a guess.

Part of the choreography involved the girls (who were 11-13) spanking themselves, getting on all fours and wiggling their bottoms at the audience, and a lot of pelvic thrusting.

I really cannot imagine a "non-slutty" interpretation of that performance.

Like I said in an earlier post, some of these provacative dance moves done by some of our local cheerleaders, along to the song "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" are what caused many people to finally say something to the school board about the way the girls were performing. Having seen it myself, your mind could have been 1000 feet from the gutter and still viewed the moves as sexually provacative. It's bad when tons of teen boys and adult men are hanging over the railings, whistliing and howling at the girls as they perform. Combined with the ridiculously short uniforms and bare midriffs, it looked pretty bad. They've been forced to tone it down and choose their music more carefully, which I think was appropriate in this case. Not all teams dance that way though. Unfortunately, it's the ones that do that give all the others a bad rep. It's also becoming more and more common to see the "slutty" dance moves and the too revealing outfits along with it, so I can see why people have formed the opinions that they have.

No one is saying that ALL, or even MOST, cheerleaders are slutty. Some people have just remarked that they have seen SOME routines that were in questionable taste. I definitely have seen some costumes (we live in FL were it's often 90 degrees on game night) that are a bit more revealing than I would like to see my DD wearing, and dancing that I would not like to see her performing. The same can be said of dance routines in recitals I've attended.

Fortunately, they've been pretty rare, in MY experience. To say that ALL cheerleaders are doing them is not true. To say that NO cheerleaders are doing them is just as untrue.

Edited to say ONE person did say ALL. I would have to disagree with that person.

granted they wear short skirts... but with big pants underneath... so why is that offensive and not gymnasts in leotards? or swimmers?

plus... all the make-up... i used to do ballet... and you have to PILE it on.. kids wearing red blush and lippie... just to make it seen from a distance!

i think that might be the case.... hopefully...

I agree with this.

And for a performance--you need makeup to see features. I have no problem with this. If you were piling it on daily for practice--well, that might be a bit much.

I think everyone who thinks ALL Cheerleaders are slutty needs something I can't say here.

Yes, ONE person said something SIMILAR to that, and I believe she was saying that tongue and cheek.

AGAIN I have acknowledged that... :confused3

I don't find the pic offensive. The girls are covered. They are wearing more than Miss America pageant participants, and are not flaunting their bosoms like a stripper would.

I'm guessing people are posting and not actually reading any of the other posts? I can think of no other explanation... :confused3

Another point...I don't think anyone has said the girls who are in cheer/dance are slutty. The outfits, dance, movements, music all added together can many times be sleazy. That's a big difference. We don't know anyone's daughter, niece, etc. in here so I wouldn't pretend to know if their sluts or not.

I originally brought his all up because I know a lot of cheer and dance moms, and they are the type that would frown on a girl wearing a "future Hooters Girl" shirt while their daughters are prancing around in ultra mini skirts, bare midriffs, and a big smile while they run their hands up and down their body, thrust their hips to the lyrics "push it reallllll good"

Let's also not pretend this is an exception. It is commonplace, and yes some are moreover the top than others. But far more routines have elements of this than those who do not.

Yes...that's why I wasn't trying to disagree with you earlier...I was trying to point it out so this wouldn't keep happening...oh well... As usual we have 4 debates going on simultaneously.

Ok - I'll lighten up the thread a little here. I'm a high school cheer coach and where I'm from we always called them "tights" - even in college. Well, when I got the job here (the other end of the state) I kept talking to the girls about ordering tights, and they just had this awful look on their faces. Finally, a few days later, one of them gets up the nerve to ask me why I would make them wear tights. I say, "Well - do you really want everyone to see your underwear when you tumble and/or stunt?" She didn't say anything else but was still looking at me weird. So after lots of misunderstandings, a few calls from moms, and some tears I figure out that they call them "bloomers" and thought when I was saying "tights" that I was going to make them wear thick pantyhose type things. No wonder they were so upset! I kept asking if they wanted navy or gold! Can you imagine navy or gold stockings under a cheerleading uni! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
