Do you find this offensive....

I find the picture in poor taste. The person snapping the picture can see that underneath the skirt is peeking through.
More appropriate to have the girls stand or fix their skirts before snapping the shot.

Or better yet cut off below the waist in the shot. Would have been much better!

You're completely missing the point. It isn't just the short skirts and caked on make-up. It's the suggestive moves that go along with it.I have seen the routines plenty. Now I understand there is competitive cheer and competitive dance, and they're different for whatever reason. But all the routines tend to have bumping and grinding, raised eyebrow and smile while they do it. We all know exactly what I'm talking about. If you doubt me, just watch ESPN the next time they have one of these competitions.

As long as their wear their lollypops underneath no big deal.

Who in the world came up with the name lollypops? Consider where they are worn. That to me, is offensive.

:worship: Now, now little Suzy does it because they have too because all the other teams do it and they wanna win. Winning is all that matters!!

I don't find the picture offensive at all - they look like a bunch of sweet young girls in typical cheerleading attire. All very cute, to boot!

That being said, a few years ago my step daughter was on her school "dance" team - sorry, it's more like cheering than dance to me - in an all girls catholic school. We went to a few of the competitions (both dance and cheer preformed) and I found a significant number of their moves, as well as those of the other teams, much too provocative. Especially that pelvic tilt one that makes them look like they're - well, I don't think I need to say it.

I think it depends on the area, level of competition, and "style", but I understand what some might say would "make a stripper blush", as I saw my own step daughter "preform" that way. But it's clearly a matter of opinion, as her mother thought it was just fine. :confused3

I think it depends on where you are. We called ours "Greenies" because they were green.

we do not call them lollipops
they are tilly tights here

Knowing that there are pedophiles just a few mouseclicks away, I personally would not put a picture on the Internet where you can see up young girls' skirts, even with appropriate undergarments.

JMHO.

C'mon - It's not like they wear thongs under those skirts! As others have said, what about gymasts or dancers, wearing leotards? The bottom half of the leotard is essentially the same as what is worn under the cheerleading skirts. So if someone's DD is a gymnast, are they not allowed to take pictures of her in her leotard unless it only shows from the waist up?? Or whatif your child is a swimmer - better not take any pictures in their swimsuit!

Do I think soime of the moves in some cheerleading routines are too suggestive - yes. But I don't think the short skirts are inappropriate - IMO, it's essentially the same as wearing a leotard, only with a skirt on top of it.

I do not find cheerleading inherently offensive, but when I see little girls thrusting their crotches at an audience, grinding their hips, shaking their bottoms and simulating sex with the floor mats, it turns my stomach.

Yes, I have seen routines with exactly those moves.

My 9 yo daughter figure skates, and I make very sure that her music, choreography and costumes are not remotely suggestive.

The OP has managed to confuse everyone with the posting of that picture. I originally made this comment in the Hooters thread:

Oh the irony. How many of you saying "no Hooters shirt" are cheer moms? I have seen these routines, and the girls of all ages are wearing skimpy skirts, make-up that would make a stripper blush, and suggestive dancing/movements. Justify that. "

Then Patti created a whole new thread asking if that comment was appropriate for the picture she posted. The key is that I made my comment a day before I saw this picture. My comment had NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT PICTURE.

We can debate this in a friendly manner, I just want it to be clear I was not referring to her daughter, that picture, etc. Although I will say that picture partially validates my original point.

Not offensive at all. I think they look adorable! I don't even think their skirts look too short. It's not like they don't have bloomers (that's what we used to call them when I cheered) under them.

Exactly, there is a difference between beautiful/functional attire and sexually suggestive attire. Figure skaters ans swimmers can't perform with long skirts. And again, the attire is only a small part of the equation.

I know what you are saying. And yes, sometimes the routines cheerleaders do look as if they came straight out of Crazy Horse. (strip bar)

No one was discussing that picture in particular.

My son is a proud cheerleader for Penn State and I'm very proud of him. Their uniforms aren't trashy and the girl's makeup, etc., isn't over the top.

I don't find that picture offensive at all.

However, cheerleading can go two ways.

I have never seen a competing team (such as those who compete at Disney's WWOS) do anything provactive or trashy. I know they get points deducted if they do.

However at local high school games the cheerleaders do tend to um... shake and thrust a bit more. I'm sure there are strip clubs more subtle than some of the stuff I've seen. Like I said, these were just side line cheerleaders and not in competions. That is how the sport gets a bad rap.

Agreed. And bloomers is what my friends called them as well. I really don't see how all these people can see anything sexual about cheerleading. :confused3 They are little girls. The dances are DANCES. Maybe you have to be really looking at it in a different way?

Actually, quite a few people were discussing that picture, that's whay I wanted to clear up the confusion. Anyhow.....back to the deabte.

Actually, I was defending you when I said no one was discussing that picture in particular.
