A conversation between a few friends and me sparked some interesting questions. I thought I would ask here, too to get a different perspective.

  • When you are on the dining plan and the service is sub-par or just not very good, do you feel obligated to tip the recommended 18%?
  • If you don't feel obligated or did not feel the service was worth an 18% tip, do you feel bad for leaving less than 15%?

Just so you know where the questions were coming from, it was a discussion about economy, Disney as a whole and service industries.

These questions ARE NOT to start a tipping debate, ask if it is okay to tip or not tip or anything of the sort. It is just to ask your perspective on the two questions above.

If I find the service acceptable, I tip 15% if I find the service above acceptable I will tip 18% or more. Generally I tip a minimum of about 17% everywhere I go.

If I find the service unacceptable, I find a manager. Generally, if a mananger cannot "make it right" I will tip around 10%. Never less than that. ( I will add here that this has only happened twice in my life...)

I have a REAL hard time tipping 15% at buffets...

I do believe it says "suggested".

If I leave 15%, that is less for me as I normally tip 20% or higher depending on my service... If I have sub-par or poor service, I also notify the manager that we did as I leave. I don't want extra "poor" service items to make it right... if it is wrong, it is wrong even with something extra.

:rolleyes1 I get that.... but not all will.

There's an entire thread for this discussion.;)

I emphatically disagree. That thread is devoted to official WDW tipping policy, tipping information, questions about when the gratuity is or isn't included, etc. It would be completely out of place to discuss people's *opinions* and *feelings* in the tipping *information* thread.

The moderators may disagree with me, of course, but I personally would hate to need information on tipping and try to read the "tipping information" thread and instead come across pages of discussion about people's feelings and opinions on one issue.

Hey There -

I never feel obligated to pay for something (no matter what it is) if I am not getting what I pay for. I don't give my daughter allowance for chores she did not do, either. :)

I do not feel bad if I leave less than the suggested amount. Not to sound like a smart mouth, but I wonder if the hypothetical person providing the hypothetical poor service would feel bad for the service they gave. ;)

If the service is horrible, there's no way I'm leaving 18%. Depending on what the issue was . . . I'd leave 15% or even 10%. That being said, if the service is great, I'll leave way over 18%!

In Florida I do feel obligated to tip even when the service is sub par due to the sub-minimum wage laws. In California - where I live - I do not feel obligated to tip because servers make the same minimum wage (or more) as everyone else. That being said, I am 40 years old and I can only remember twice in my whole life where I did not tip around 20%. I almost - like 99% - never have bad service
