I log off every so often. It forces the cable modem to get a new IP address, which makes things a little tougher for hackers.
If you have a cable modem or DSL, you should invest in a router. They are cheap and act as the best firewall you can buy. My router logs every access attempt and it amazes me how many hackers try to get into my system on a daily basis. A slow day will only have 5 attempted break ins. Luckily the router turns them all back.
