The "clique" threads can seem overwhelming but you don't need to be able to go back and read all 10000 pages. Just go over, maybe read the posts from that day and say Hi and introduce yourself. If no one answers right away they may all be gone for a while. Stick around and see what happens.

I was new to one just a few weeks ago. But everyone took me in and I have made some great friends. If you don't understand some of the inside stuff PM someone and ask. You can usually figure out who the best person to ask is after a few days. I can't think of anyone that wouldn't be happy to explain. An "inside" joke is more fun if you share it.

Yes, there are hijackings. I don't read everything that goes on, but it seems that a lot of times they are by people that already know the OP, or on threads that are meant to be silly anyway.

To the OP and others that feel ignored I am really sorry. This is a huge board and things do tend to get lost sometimes. Sometimes finding a few kindred spirits that you can hang out with is more fun than hoping that a few of the thousands here will reply to something. I hope you find this a more welcoming place in the future.

The clique threads don't really bother me if they're self-contained. But when they start leaking everywhere else, I do admit it can be a little annoying.

I can name at least 4 threads from the past week that I've clicked on with every intention of offering a serious answer to, only to find that they've been hijacked with inside jokes by page 2 and are no longer on topic. It's a little discouraging. And actually pretty irritating, not to mention a tad immature.

And I can really understand that. Once I realized how it appeared I really tried to be careful about that sort of thing. And YES, I've had it happen to me. And I'm talking true hijackings, not when the thread veers off course. There have been many times that I've read the first page of a thread, replied without having time to read all the replies, and then realized that the thread was on a totally different topic. And it isn't just a few posters who do it...sometimes it just veers offcourse.

The jokes, pictures, etc., are hard to follow when you aren't in the know. Consequently, any thread that heads down that path becomes of little interest to me. That's understandable, right? It's hard to be interested in something when you are so out of the loop.

When I say "clique", it is for lack of a better term. I understand that the posters are not trying to exclude others, but it's difficult to join in when you don't have a clue what's going on.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel about certain threads. Honestly, this thread turned in that direction on page one with a comment about another inside-joke thread about (of all things) chickens.

FWIW, I think that the vast majority of clique-thread posters are quite nice and would be quite welcoming ... if their threads would slow down a bit to let people in. It isn't hard to post on one of those threads, but it is very hard to keep up! I have posted on a fast moving thread (like the DIS Ladies Trip Thread back when I was planning to go) and I would post, poke around on a couple more threads, come back in 30 minutes and the thread would have 3 more pages! I was welcomed (Hi! Glad you're here!) but I simply could not keep up with the in-jokes and the sheer number of posts even if I tried. You are amazing people!

So yes,sometimes I feel like I am in the middle of a private conversation but unlike the OP it doesn't make me sad. Like dis ms I just usually drift off to another thread that I can (a) understand and (b) keep up with.

robinb, I know what you're talking about. I stop in at the Ladies meet thread on occasion, but I can't keep up. I figure that I'll meet them in November and get to know them then.

Maybe it would have gotten a page and a half of pixie dust and consoling and then it could have died a respectable death. Seriously, people choose the strangest things to make an issue out of.
