Do you do this at the Drive up ATM?

You've hit on one of my biggest pet peeves. I am a usually very patient person but it drives me crazy when people are completely oblivious to the world around them.

Here's a new one that has happened to me twice in the recent past. The first time, two people ride up on bicycles and cut in front of me to get to the ATM. It's early on a Sunday, we stop and wait. No biggie. They spend the next 10 minutes putting a card into the ATM, pushing a lot of buttons, ultimtately getting cash, and then putting in another card, pushing a lot of buttons and then putting the cash they just took out back into the ATM. Huh? Are they doing account transfers? I can't figure that one out. They repeated this at least 4 times before they rearranged everything in their backpacks and finally rode away.

The second time was the same thing, but the lady took 12 minutes to do this (over and over). I was just... shocked. She spent time playing with her hair, looking through her purse.... ahhhh!!

So what's up with the taking money out and then putting it in??

I could be wrong but I used to work in loss prevention at a bank and it kind of sounds like they were pulling something fraudulent. Like maybe they deposited a check that they knew was bad in one account, made a withdrawal and then put the cash in another account. The fact that this happened on a Sunday and therefore no one at the bank would be aware of the account activity until Monday makes me doubly suspicious.

I do agree with a PP who said that everyone seems to be in such a hurry and have no patience...like in the fraction of a second the traffic light turns green, the horn starts honking from the peanut gallery.

I have patience enough to wait for folks at the ATM.... to an extent. When the person sits there for a long amount of time fiddling around I find it pretty selfish of them to be honest.

For me, I pull up insert the card, type in the necessary data, get the cash, hand it to my teen(s) in the backseat as I pull away. Same thing every time.

I get annoyed when they take a long time too but I'm not really known for being the most patient person around either. I am working on the being more patient thing but it's really hard.

Sorry- I'm not pulling away unless I have my seat belt fastened. I am too short and can't reach from inside the car so I have to get out. Sometimes I even take out money $15 at a time so I can get $5s. I only do this when I can't get to the bank when it is open. Sorry - an ATM machine has lots of functionality and I need to use it sometimes. I don't put everything away nice and tidy - just stick it into my wallet so it is safe - it might take 20 more seconds.

This drives me nuts too. Recently at Target, the woman in front of me not only waited until the ordered was totaled before pulling out her checkbook but then asked for a pen! I always want to tell these people, "There's this great new invention - it's called a debit card. You swipe it, put in your PIN, and it accomplishes the same thing as writing a check, but a lot faster, and you don't need to pull out your license."

Not all of us want to use "this great new invention called a debit card." I prefer my checkbook, thank you very much. I'm always hearing about people having trouble with their accounts when they use their debit card, no thanks. And I was never good at remembering to write the amount down in the checkbook when we took money out at the ATM, so then we'd be overdrawn sometimes, so I'm sure I'd be the same way with a debit card. So, for me, a checkbook is just easier and I prefer it. Sorry to annoy you.

I do make sure I have my checkbook out before my purchases are all wrung up though on the register, but I really don't think it takes any more time to hand the cashier a blank check, the machine prints the amount, I sign my name on the little machine and I'm done. It takes time to swipe your debit card (and sometimes it has to be swiped more than once because it doesn't "take"), put in your pin number, wait for the machine to print your receipt, etc. I don't think there's all that much difference in the two for the time it takes.

And I have seen stores where the cashier can just run the check through and have everything printed on it (except for the customer's signature, of course), but Target isn't one of them.

I have no patience. Do not fill out ANYTHING at the drive-through ATM and do not sit there when you are done doing whatever you do. Drive-up, do your thing, take your card and receipts/cash and pull out.

Respectfully, as another short person, I'm going to rebuckle my seatbelt before I put my car in gear. I couldn't reach the card slot/buttons/money and reciept dispensers while buckled in, and while my state's seatbelt law is secondary, I'm not moving my car until it's fastened again.

Please folks, many of the credit card machines now will read your card while the order is being rung up

Um, not at the store where I do most of my grocery shopping. Debit cards won't register until the order's complete, and the cashiers run credit cards themselves. It's just the way things work there.

I don't take my seat belt off when I use the ATM. Didn't know people did that.

Short people do - the world wasn't designed for us.

man, people are so inpatient these days. I can see being annoyed at someone who is fiddling around doing things not related to driving off from the atm (brushing hair or putting on makeup come to mind), but putting money away or fastening a seatbelt just seems like part of the transaction.

I have to take my seatbelt off at this one atm because whoever set this one up must have been drunk at the time. You have to pull really close up then swing your car back in order to get close, and even then you can't get close enough to the atm to easily reach over to it--and I'm of average height. I put my money away and fasten my seatbelt before I leave the atm area, it probably only takes 30 seconds. Is that really too much to ask?

Why doesn't everyone practice their deep beathing exercises when you are in a situation like this. It's great for your lungs and lowers your blood pressure also.

It certainly doesn't bother me if a person takes the time to buckle their seatbelt (I give the same courtesy at the Costco gas pumps which are packed). But, really, please don't reorganize your purse while you have people waiting. I know it's "only" a minute or two but when several people do this, the wait times really start to back up.

I usually get my money and throw the cash and the card on the seat until I can get someplace to organize it where I don't inconvenience anyone.

If there is an area to pull forward, yes it would annoy me. If there isn't an area to pull forward (the lane empties into a street?) I'd be a little more understanding. But really, your purse/money doesn't need to be in order to DRIVE. It can sit in the seat next to you until you get where you're going.

I was in the drive up ATM line, 3rd in line. When the person in front of me got up to the ATM he wasn't even ready. It took him another bit of time to get his card out of his wallet and then took forever for his transaction. Then he pulled up about 2 inches which was no help and sat there.

I try to have my card and any deposit stuff ready to go when I pull up. When I finish I check in my rearview mirror. If there is someone behind me I pull ahead as far as possible so they can get on with their business. If there is nobody behind I put stuff away but continue to make sure no one is behind me.

I tend to be an impatient person and this is one of my biggest pet peeves along with people who don't use their blinkers!!!!

At my local grocery store, Wal-Mart and Meijer's you don't even have to sign your check. It gets automatically printed with the amount and "VOID" on it, then they give it right back to you with your receipt. You just have to sign the little machine, like you would with a credit card.

I usually do buckle my seatbelt and stick my card/cash back in my wallet. It takes about 10 seconds for both.

Ditto for the grocery store. You really can't give me a few seconds to put my stuff away while I have somewhere to put my purse to do so? It is a whole lot easier to put my cards back into my wallet and stow my wallet while it is sitting on the counter than it is to juggle everything and drop things while walking away.

Please remember there are two sides to every story. You make walk away thinking I am oblivious, while I walk away thinking you are rude and pushy.

Even though I am not in a hurry, it still is annoying when someone does their business at ATM, then they sit there and arrange their purse, put their stuff away, get rebuckled into their seatbelt...........then minutes later finally pull away.
I don't know why it bothers me so but it does. I pull forward out of the way, and re-buckle, ( I can't reach if I stay buckled.......LOL)........ put the card away etc..........

It is just lack of courtesy? or do you sit too when you are done.

Although I am one of those throw it on the seat and get going people, usually because I have somewhere to get to, I think the true lack of courtesy are the ones who are so impatient and entitled that they think their time is worth more and can't grant somebody the courtesy of allowing them 30 seconds to a couple of minutes to put their stuff in their purse or wallet. Our snowflake children are growing up and the entitlement attitude is becoming pervasive. Move out of the way, here I come and don't make me wait an extra 30 seconds

Yes, I can see being annoyed with somebody who pulls down their visor mirror and starts applying lipstick and getting themselves ready before moving on, but not the minute it takes to allow somebody the privilege of putting their stuff away neatly.

I actually don't like it when a car pulls ahead a length or two up to finish their business. Sorry, if you stop your car in front of mine, there is no way I am going to open my window to transact my business until you pull away. I have no idea if you are putting your cash away or if you are waiting to rob me. I would much rather you just put your stuff away at the ATM instead of getting your stuff, getting your car out of park, inching up, stopping your car again, retrieving your money and receipt off your seat, putting your receipts and cards away and then pulling out. Takes twice as long to do that.

As for filling out envelopes at the ATM - it seems like all of our ATMS have gone to the "Do you need an envelope" question where the machine spits out a single envelope during the transaction for you to fill out. There no longer are stacks of them at the ATMs that you can take a few to store at home to be prepared. So, you put in your pin number, choose deposit, put in how much and then the machine asks if you need an envelope, you push yes, it spits out the envelope, you take it into your car and fill it out as the machine is beeping "do you need more time?" and then you stick it in the deposit slot. This saves the bank money in regulating the one envelope per customer, but it does add a minute or two to the transaction. For those impatient ones, I have been known to get the envelope, cancel the transaction, and move to the back of the line. But most of the time, I take the time to finish my transaction at the machine.

And taking money out of the ATM and then putting it back in? I have done this several times. I have college kids that sometimes (ok, often) need a cash infusion. I have a copy of their atm card. I will take cash out of my account and then take the kids card and put it into their account. I could write a personal check and deposit it, but one of my kid's chosen bank has a policy of imposing a two or three day hold on a personal check. So, while the funds might be available right away, as soon as the ATM is balanced, often times a hold is put on personal check deposits. So we just deal in cash transfers. Nothing nefarious or underhanded.

Ummm, yeah - that is why it is called drive up banking.

There are many people whose banks and credit unions only have a few brick and mortar buildings. The closest brick and mortar building for our credit union is about 45 minutes away. They want you to do most of your banking at ATMS -saves them money on tellers and other bank personnel, which in turn gives us great returns on our money, great rates on loans and other benefits that the owner/customers reap.

So, yup, you better believe I do all my weekly banking at the ATM that is 2 minutes from my house rather than spending an hour and a half in the car (45 minutes each way.)

If it only takes 30 seconds than I doubt you are bothering anyone. You *know* we are talking about people who, you can see that their transaction is done, and they sit there for at least a full minute or more. That's too long, IMO, unless it is an elderly person (and they seem to shy away from ATMs) who struggles for various reasons. I just know that the amount of people I get stuck behind at ATMs who are fooling around in the car, can't all be due to some sort of disability or age-related issue. It just happens too often for there to be a good excuse.
